September Events

First Day of School

GAA celebrated 15 years of nurturing young minds in our first day of school ceremonies. Excited new students, families and teachers joined together with balloons and “teacher trivia” to mark this momentous occasion! 

 

Terry Fox 

This year, GAA reached 110% of our Terry Fix fundraising goal by reaching over $3000 raised! To date, GAA has raised more than $17,000 in Terry Fox donations from our generous families. Our school run day saw students and teachers joining in honouring this important cause! 

 

Orange Shirt day

GAA recognizes orange shirt day to remember victims and survivors of Canadian residential schools. The Diversity Council hosted a special Indigeous O Canada anthem and land acknowledgement, as well as sharing the courageous histories of those affected by the residential schools system. 

 

Dot Day Global celebration of courage and collaboration

Students celebrated the power of the dot as a unique symbol of individualism and courage. Dot day stories, activities and discussions were featured as we celebrate each and every learner! 

 

Grandparents Day

A packed crowd of proud grandparents and families joined us to celebrate our annual Grandparents Day. All classes featured unique presentations that celebrated the ways in which our grandparents support and nurture us, and the histories which created our special family histories! 

 

House huddle 

Students joined in their Highlander Houses to exercise their team work, communication and collaboration skills in special huddle events! Highlander house spirit was evident in the house T-shirt’s worn by students and teachers alike! 

 

Student Council me to we book drive 

Thanks to the generous donations of our school community, student council was able to collect over 500 books for a local library in need. Our Bool Drive supports our Me to We student activism. Way to go GAA! 

 

Student Council announced and leadership 

Congratulations to our student council executive members and class representatives for the 2019-2020 school year! New leadership positions were also announced, including Heads of House, Debate Team Captain, Lead Library Helper, H2 Crew Leaders and Diversity Council Leaders. 

 

Paul Davis 

Paul Davis, renowned social media expert, joined us for special grade 4-8 class presentations that emphasized social media safety practices and tips. A parent presentation was also held by Paul Davis in order to partner with families to support social media safety for our students. 

 

Curriculum night 

Families enjoyed visiting their children’s classrooms and learning about the exciting curriculum initiatives at GAA, including project based learning, vertical teaching and an instrumental band programme. Thanks to all parents that attended to meet and greet with our school community! 

 

Ultimate frisbee

The grade 8s had fitness fun in the ultimate frisbee championship, which featured student referees and plenty of running! The grade 8s beat out competing schools while maintaining sportsmanship and positivity throughout the day. 

 

Summer reading 

Students were rewarded for their summer reading! Logging their entries through our online system, students earned rewards for doing what we love- reading! 

 

40 love tennis 

40 love tennis is back at GAA with our talented tennis coaches. Pros and newbies alike enjoy learning the skills, drills and matches of tennis! 

 

Running Experience 

With Mrs. Blanken and Ms. McCann at the lead, run club students are back at it practicing their cross country and endurance skills and running games at our Running Experience club. 

 

Young Engineers

Students engaged in coding and skills building exercises and games at our Young Engineers Club. 

 

Grade 6 Bake Sale 

In partnership with BullFrog energy, the grade 6 class raised over $500 in their school bake sale to fund renewable energy investments for our school community. Supporting their project based learning initiative, the grade 6 class will reinvest the bake sale revenue into converting our school energy consumption into renewable grid based energy with BullFrog. 

 

We day

A celebration of student activism and engagement, We Day featured musical, activist, poetry and leadership performances, interactive campaigns featuring local and global impacts and most importantly, the power of “We” to change the world! 

 

Thanksgiving day food drive - student council 

Held until Thanksgiving, student council is hosting a non perishable food drive for donation to our Local Salvation Army. Student council executive members and representatives will volunteer at the local Salvation Army to sort and stock food items used by the community food bank for those in need.

 

Grade 8 breakfast 

The first day of school featured a special welcome breakfast for the senior grade 8 students, who enjoyed their new flex seating classroom arrangement and breakfast bar addition. 

 

Walk out to support global warming

Known as #futurefridays and initiated by the activism of Greta Thunberg, GAA students held a recess walk out to join other youth in supporting the urgent demand to fight climate change.
