Fieldstone supports girls' education initiative in Cameroon

Fieldstone graduate, Arkady, who first participated in service-based travel on a Fieldstone Horizons Week trip to Ecuador while in Grade 7, is now studying International Relations at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Earlier this month, she helped to reinforce the growing sister-school relationship between Fieldstone Day School and GS Marita in Cameroon. Over the past couple of years, our students have raised funds, created artwork for Marita students and most recently took a very snowy group photo and signed a banner for our sister-school. Arkady, travelling with her family and other volunteers of International Children's Awareness (ICA) Canada, assures us that everything was delivered in good condition. Fieldstone remains involved in ongoing projects to support GS Marita and ICA's initiative to build a permanent school for the students. The Fieldstone community has also committed to paying the tuition for up to 100 girls at Marita each year (annual tuition is $7) through Project Afuah, an initiative that supports girls' education throughout the country. Cameroonian girls, like so many others in the developing world, face numerous barriers to education. Through this modest commitment to provide an education for these girls, Fieldstone hopes to effect positive economic and social change in this rural town and also teach our own students about important international issues. We also provide an opportunity for our students to be directly involved in making their world a better place, by making and selling jewellery or hosting a fundraising breakfast. Fieldstone will be hosting a Pancake/Smoothie Breakfast at 8 a.m. on Thursday, May 15 (2999 Dufferin Street) with all proceeds going to fund girls' education at GS Marita in Cameroon. Special guests will include local Cameroonian musician, Njacko Backo, and Arkady Silverman, who will be showing slides and video from her recent trip to Marita. Beaded bracelets, made by our Primary Girls' Club, will be available for purchase.
