Graduation Ceremony 2019

Professor Santa Ono is the current President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia (UBC) here in Vancouver, and a well-recognized leader in post-secondary education.  Holding a PhD in Experimental Medicine from McGill University and a long and accomplished career beyond the laboratory, spanning universities such as Harvard University, the University of Cincinnati, and Emory University, Professor Ono brought a wealth of insights on both post-secondary studies and career pursuits to share with our graduates.

He spoke with passion and power, inspiring grads with wisdom and experience, and answering their burning questions in our 2019 graduation ceremony, which took place on Friday, March 15th, 2019.

“Embrace who you are with pride,” said Ono. “Bodwell’s motto is Strength in Diversity and it is a slogan that resonates with me. Because I can appreciate how our diversity strengthens us individually… Together, we are wiser, more confident, more compassionate and stronger.”

Grads took further notice when Professor Ono gave personal advice for the future. “Expect the unexpected and try to develop skills that can be applicable in any situation, such as communication skills, critical thinking and flexibility. And be prepared for an exciting fulfilling road ahead.”  Gesturing to our visiting family members, he said, “Just talk to your parents and grandparents, and they will tell you about their rollercoaster ride of their lives.”

Finally, Ono concluded by highlighting the special place in the current and future world for Bodwell graduates.  “Schools such as Bodwell and UBC and other international schools play a very important role, in forming in you empathy and global understanding. We need more schools like Bodwell. We need more students like you to make the world a better place. Don't underestimate how important each and every one of you. You are the future of the world and we are tremendously proud of everything that you've accomplished today.”

We sincerely thank President Santa Ono for sharing his time, good cheer and valuable knowledge with all of our graduates on their special day, and we wish all Bodwell graduates the very best success in their upcoming university studies.

Congratulations, Class of 2019!
