Star Academy takes pride in its contribution to community and global events. We teach our youth about their responsibility to the world around them in many different ways. Along with this we are teaching the students to look ahead and see ways in which they can impact the world. From this, our Science Fair was born – teaching our children to think outside the box, to see where their minds can take them, ensures that every year our Science Fair is exciting!
Every student in the school, from the kindergarteners to the eighth graders, stands beside their display board and confidently explains their project to the guests meandering through the fair. Every single student had reason to be proud of what they have accomplished this year and visitors frequently comment on how impressive the fair was to attend. One special thing about Star Academy’s Science Fair is that all projects are student-driven, from the topic choice to the display board. Teachers provide guidance and parents are encouraged to provide support in a hands-off way as much as possible, thus enabling the student to experience a learning opportunity that provides each one of them with invaluable and life-long work skills.
A Science Fair project is unique from other projects throughout the year in that it encompasses the full range of core subject areas that are taught throughout the year. Students apply skills from: mathematics (measurements, calculations, data charts and graphs); science (concepts, scientific method); reading (researching); writing (procedural writing, results and conclusions); and oral communication (presentations and judging interviews). As a result, Science Fair projects are true cross-curricular ventures that teach students skills that are applicable to all areas of their future academic endeavours. It is also an opportunity for students to discover an area of science or technology that they would not normally learn about in school and investigate it further, thus broadening their spectrum of knowledge and experience.
Star Academy is a private elementary school in Mississauga, founded in 1997, offering academic and enriched curriculum from Kindergarten through Grade Eight. Our 10:1 ratio, which is strictly maintained throughout the school, ensures that our teachers are able to deliver a differentiated and engaging programme to meet the personal needs of each student.
