The Study: the most Francophone of English schools

No compromise. These are two important words that perfectly describe The Study’s unique mother-tongue French and English education program.

In fact, students attending this highly respected all girls school in Westmount receive their program instruction in both mother-tongue French and English on equal footing. Not to be content with a simple second language programme or a language immersion programme, The Study offers 50% of instruction in French at the primary level, and 40% at the secondary level. In fact, according to many of our francophone parents, The Study’s French mother-tongue program compares favourably to that of the best French schools in Quebec.

For parents, being able to provide their children with an opportunity to master two languages is a priority that The Study has supported for many years. Repeatedly, in parent surveys, both francophone and anglophone parents indicate, that by far, their primary reason for choosing The Study is the unique mother-tongue bilingual education programme.

As Jean-Sébastien Monty, father of two Study students, says, "My daughters are not learning French and English fortified; they are learning in French and in English. In addition, by placing an emphasis on oral presentations, The Study helps to ensure that the girls become perfectly bilingual. Like many parents, I love The Study’s global educational approach, as it truly expands our daughters’ horizons."

Another reason for choosing The Study, and one that has been emphasized repeatedly in parent satisfaction scores, is The Study’s small class sizes. "Smaller class size creates an environment that is both stimulating and warm, in which teachers can really give individual attention to each girl," says Effie Koufalis, mother of a Study Elementary School student.

"For over 100 years, The Study has been a leading Montreal school where we ‘teach things that really matter’ says Head of School, Nancy Sweer. "What really matters for The Study is that we continue to provide an education that prepares young women to be at their best in both Quebec and global society. It starts here and now, with a highly enriched French and English mother-tongue program, preparing our students to reach their full potential in whatever their passion may be.

To preserve the mother-tongue bilingual education program, unique to English schools in Quebec, The Study recently became financially autonmous from the Quebec government. Since an eligibility certificate is no longer required, The Study can continue

to maintain a strong and diverse student body from elementary school to end of high school, and to remain true to its mission.

Thanks to the contributions and support from The Study Foundation, this new status does not impact tuition, which will remain at a competitive level. Moreover, The Study School Foundation continues to support a robost financial aid program, offered to mission-appropriate girls of all backgrounds. Last year, 22% of students at The Study received approximately $ 426,000 in financial aid.

The world needs great women, great bilingual women.
