(5) Overall Experience

Ontario Virtual School provided a flexible and well-structured learning environment that allowed me to balance academics with personal commitments effectively. The Biology 12 course was clear and organized, with engaging video lessons and timely feedback from knowledgeable teachers. This structure encouraged independence, self-discipline, and strong time-management skills, all of which prepared me well for university at the University College London. The administration was responsive and supportive, and I could call anything if I had any concerns or questions. I appreciated the smooth admissions process and basic university counselling support. Overall, Ontario Virtual School is an excellent choice for motivated, self-directed learners seeking flexibility and academic rigor in a virtual setting. I would also heavily recommend this school to anyone applying abroad to the US or UK.

(5) School Leadership

The leadership and administration at Ontario Virtual School were consistently professional. Interactions were limited compared to a traditional school, but the administrators communicated clearly with me and my parents, especially when I was applying to schools in the UK. They responded quickly to questions and made sure that students stayed informed about course requirements, deadlines, and transcripts on OUAC. While being online reduced day-to-day interaction, the administration allowed for a positive learning environment. There wasn’t a strong sense of community leadership in the traditional sense, but their behind-the-scenes efficiency gave me confidence in the school.

(5) Teaching

The teaching at Ontario Virtual School was structured, clear, and well-organized. My teacher was knowledgeable in biology 12 and consistently provided timely, constructive feedback on assignments. The student-teacher relationship was more formal compared to my day school, but still supportive. There was a lack of live interaction, which limited deeper connections that could be improved upon. But questions were answered quickly through the course portal or email, and expectations were clear on the assignments. The teaching style at OVS encouraged independent thinking and responsibility, which helped me develop strong academic habits while also focusing on extracurriculars. I wouldn’t say the platform inspired a “love of learning” in the traditional sense, but it gave me the tools and confidence to take ownership of my education and schedule.

(5) Academics

Ontario Virtual School offers a strong academic program, especially for self-directed learners. Courses are based on the Ontario curriculum and are presented in a clear, logical structure with video lessons, practice questions, and assessments. For the course I took, Biology 12, I found the workload manageable but still challenging, particularly because you are responsible for setting your own pace. There’s little competition or collaboration among students, which can be a strength or weakness depending on your learning style, but for me, it was a strength. I appreciated the academic freedom it offered, and the system taught me valuable skills like time management and self-motivation. Overall, OVS prepared me well for university, especially by helping me develop independence, a more in-depth knowledge of Biology 12, and the ability to learn effectively without constant supervision.

(5) School Life

Student life at Ontario Virtual School is very different from that of a traditional school. Since all learning happens online, there's no real school spirit or social community. That said, the flexibility it offered had a major positive impact on my quality of life. I could study on my schedule, focus when I was most productive, and avoid unnecessary stress. This allowed me to pursue my extracurriculars like research on ammonia production, where I went to the Canada Wide Science Fair, and also became a medical volunteer. Most students at my day school who have done OVS seemed focused and goal-oriented. While I didn’t feel particularly attached to the school, unlike my day school, I appreciated how it supported my academic and personal needs efficiently.

(5) Admissions

The admissions process at Ontario Virtual School was straightforward. I was able to register quickly, and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. Confirming my prerequisite courses was very easy, and I could start immediately. There were no interviews, which helped reduce the anxiety. My advice for prospective students is to make sure this format suits your learning style. It’s ideal for motivated, organized learners who don’t need much external structure to stay on track or for people who need time to do their extracurriculars.

(5) University placement and counselling

Ontario Virtual School provided good support for university applications, such as quick transcript upload and basic guidance to all students on the home screen. They send reminders to add OVS to the OUAC accounts and easy videos to learn how to do so. I appreciated how easily they handled document submissions through OUAC. I also appreciated the time OVS sent my mid-year report card to over 20 US and UK schools in a straightforward process. I had to take initiative to research post-secondary options, requirements, and deadlines on my own. For students who are already clear on their goals, this school works fine, but those needing step-by-step guidance may need to seek outside help. In my opinion, OVS fulfilled its obligations, and I could not have asked for a more efficient counselling system.
