(N/A) Student Experience

(5) School Leadership

I do respect the staff at Ontario Virtual School, especially the teachers and guidance team. From my experience, they’re responsive and genuinely try to help, even though it’s all done online. When I had questions or needed clarification, I usually got a helpful reply within a day or two, which I appreciated. I think they do a great job of keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes and ensuring that students can access everything they need. One thing I wish they did more of, though, is personal check-ins or outreach, something like a just a quick message now and then to ask how things are going or if I need help would go a long way. Since OVS is so self-directed, it’s easy to feel like you’re on your own. A little more interaction from school leaders could make it feel more supportive and connected.

(5) Teaching

I think the expectations from teachers at Ontario Virtual School are pretty reasonable; it's not too much, not too little. The work is manageable as long as you stay on top of it, and I appreciated that it didn’t feel overwhelming. That said, there were times when I wasn’t completely sure what was expected on certain assignments. The instructions are usually clear, but sometimes more detailed examples or rubrics would help. It feels like they care more about helping you grow and earn the credit than just getting perfect marks. Success at OVS seems to mean being responsible, motivated, and able to manage your time, skills that go beyond just doing well on a test. Even though we don't talk to the teachers face-to-face, they are always ready to help.

(5) Academics

For me, the work at Ontario Virtual School felt just right. The self-paced structure helps because you can take extra time when you need it or move ahead if you're comfortable with the material. I never felt like the work was too easy or like I wasn’t learning anything—there was a good balance between practice and testing your understanding. I do think a lot of what I learned will be useful later in life, especially the independent learning and time management skills. OVS puts the responsibility in your hands, and that kind of self-discipline is something I know I’ll need in university and beyond. Even if some specific content doesn’t come up again, the habits I developed definitely will. In the end, the work at OVS was a good balance.
