(5) Student Experience

I studied and completed my English course (ENG4U) at Ontario Virtual School, and I had an outstanding experience. There were a lot of helpful resources for the assignments, including thorough lesson videos, slideshows, and the fact that you could submit a draft assignment and receive feedback very quickly, within a day. Moreover, the detail of the feedback I received on my assignments was exceptional, which is part of the reason why I believe I achieved a high mark at OVS. There are also other student supports available, such as a discussion forum where you upload work and receive feedback from other students. The marking time is also quick, which is why I was able to save a lot of time and finish the course within a month while still improving after each assignment. Overall, my experience at Ontario Virtual School was amazing, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends and family in the future.

The Best Part

The best part of being a student at OVS is definitely the fact that you can complete your courses at your own pace. This saves you from a lot of struggles such as exam stress and meeting deadlines on assignments, while still following a structured course.

Suggested Improvements

One thing that I wish was different is probably having Google Meet Q&As with my teacher for feedback on my assignments. I am aware that this is already a thing with math and science courses, but it would be helpful for other courses such as English. Regardless, the feedback I received on my assignments was still exceptional and helped me greatly along the way.

Hidden Details

A new student may find everything overwhelming at first because they are instantly given access to the whole curriculum and all the assignments, but I would tell them not to worry about it, as everything is done at their own pace and there are a lot of supports along the way to help them on that path.

I haven’t really had any experiences other than with my own teacher, but it was really pleasant, as I received feedback and support emails within 24 hours, often within the same day as well. The feedback was structured very constructively so that I knew what I did well on my work, what needed improvement, and also what to do in the future. Moreover, the teachers in the video presentations are great too, as they explain the lessons thoroughly with great detail.

Teachers give you your own time and pace to finish assignments, and once you have finished them and your feedback is returned, you learn a lot about where you are in the course and what to do on the next assignment. Furthermore, each assignment has a very clear rubric and oftentimes example material as well, so you are not left guessing if your work was written well before submitting it; you have something to evaluate it yourself beforehand. Also, teachers provide a very simple path to success in the course; all you have to do is just follow the feedback from the previous assignment and apply it to your next one. Teachers see this and know that the student is on the right track.

The admissions process was really smooth overall. After buying your course, all you need to do is submit your prerequisites if one is required. Within 24 hours, you will be given access to the course, and you can start working.
