My experience at Ontario Virtual School has been very positive. I really like the flexibility and the way the lessons are presented in video format, which makes it easier to learn concepts independently and review material when needed. I also like the gamification features, especially the idea of challenging other students in real time, because it makes learning feel more interactive. The free 1:1 live tutoring available seven days a week for math and science is another great resource when I need extra help. The marking response time from teachers has also been good in my experience. I have had a particularly positive experience with Mr. Kee in Computer Science; he provides helpful feedback and is responsive when I have questions. One thing I would add is more optional live study sessions or progress check-ins for students who want additional structure.

The Best Part

One thing that might surprise a new student is how many resources are available outside of the regular course lessons. I also did not realize how important time management would be. Because you have so much flexibility, you are responsible for creating a schedule and staying on top of your own deadlines.

I have had a positive experience with the school leadership, teachers, and guidance support. I appreciate that the school is organized around giving students flexibility while still providing resources when they need help. Teachers are generally responsive when students have questions, and guidance is helpful for students who need support with course planning or academic goals. I think the school could continue providing more regular communication and optional check-ins so students always know where they stand and what they should focus on next.

I think the teaching at OVS is one of its strongest parts. The lessons provide enough information to understand the concepts, while the video format makes it easy to pause, replay, and review something if I do not understand it the first time. Teachers also provide feedback on assignments, which helps me understand what I did well and what I can improve. I have had a particularly good experience with Mr. Kee in Computer Science. His feedback is helpful, and he responds when I have questions. The expectations for assignments are generally clear, although I think having more examples of strong completed work could make expectations even easier to understand. Overall, I feel that teachers want students to succeed and become more independent learners rather than simply completing work for a grade.

The academic difficulty at OVS feels appropriate overall. The courses require you to actually understand the material and complete assignments independently, but there are resources available when you need additional support. I especially appreciate being able to review lessons at my own pace instead of having to move on before I fully understand something. The material is also useful because it develops skills that can be applied beyond the course, such as time management, independent learning, research, problem-solving, and communication. I think adding more interactive academic activities could make some subjects even more engaging.

If I were giving visitors a tour of OVS, I would start with the online course platform because that is where students spend most of their time. Then, I would show them the lessons, videos, assignments, feedback, and different resources available within a course. I would also show them the tutoring and interactive features because they demonstrate that online school is not simply sitting alone and reading from a textbook. I think the most interesting part of OVS is how much control students have over their learning schedule, which makes it more enjoyable. The e-learning school could make student life even better by creating more opportunities for students to interact with one another through optional study groups, academic challenges, live events, and virtual trips.

(4.5) Admissions

The admissions process was fairly straightforward and less stressful than I expected. One of the biggest things I would tell someone applying to OVS is to read through the course information carefully and understand how the self-paced structure works before starting. It is important to realize that the flexibility also means you are responsible for managing your own time and keeping track of your progress. I would also recommend having a general schedule or plan before beginning a course so that assignments do not pile up. Looking back, I wish I had known just how much independence the school gives students. Once I understood how the platform and course structure worked, I found the experience much easier to manage.
