Ontario Virtual School is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn how to learn on their own while getting high-quality education and resources. OVS provides all sorts of tools that you wouldn’t expect to see in an in-person or an online course! For example, their calendar planning tool generates a calendar based on a customized timeline set by the student, organizing when a student should complete their lessons to achieve that desired end date. OVS also offers 1-on-1 tutoring, giving students the opportunity to get extra help when needed. Another wonderful feature OVS courses offer is a quiz game, where you can play against other students to earn points! Overall, Ontario Virtual School does a wonderful job of providing students with the materials they need to create a positive and motivating environment for independent learners.
The Best Part
OVS prepares you well for further education. I was far more prepared than my peers who had done in-person schooling or other online courses for grade 11 courses when going into grade 12. OVS also offers practice tests and exams, which helps jump-start studying!
Suggested Improvements
From time to time, the homework would not match the lessons. There were textbook pages as well, so if something from the assignment didn’t match the homework, you could check there.
Hidden Details
Although OVS offers asynchronous online courses, they are very supportive of their students, which I had not expected! The teachers respond quickly, and there are opportunities for 1-on-1 online tutoring.
(5) Academics
OVS handles the difficulty of the content well. In my case, I took SCH3U, Grade 11 Chemistry, a course that is normally deemed difficult. Although some concepts were hard, OVS provided many resources which made everything come easily. The tests and exams were quite difficult, but they prepare you very well for Grade 12 chemistry. The practice tests provided also help with this, and they include solutions too! Once you complete your practice test, you may then look at the solutions to verify your answers. This is a resource that is commonly not available. In the case that practice tests are provided, usually teachers do not attach the proper solutions. OVS does a wonderful job of making learning accessible for students and providing them with useful tools.
(5) Admissions
OVS is a paid virtual school where the only step that is needed for admission is the proper prerequisite course(s). In terms of buying and enrolling in the course, the process was very straightforward. You must simply add the course to your cart and buy it, and then, once the payment has gone through, the enrolment process begins. Essentially, OVS organizes everything for you; you will create an account, and then you will have access to the learning database and the OVS orientation.
