My name is Victoria, and I took Grade 12 Physics (SPH4U) through Ontario Virtual School. I finished with a 97%. One part of the course I remember is working through an Atwood machine simulation in the dynamics unit. I changed the mass of the pulley and compared how quickly the system accelerated. Seeing the acceleration decrease as the pulley got heavier helped me connect the numbers in my calculations to what was actually happening in the simulation. Taking physics online also meant I had to decide how much time to spend on each topic. For me, a good way to tell whether I understood something was to try a question on my own and see if I could explain why my answer made sense. For example, when I was working on projectile motion, drawing out the problem helped me figure out which height the question was asking for. Finally, the video lessons have clear structures and are very good sources to learn from!
The Best Part
The best part for me was being able to spend more time on the topics I found difficult. With physics, sometimes I could follow a worked example and still get stuck when I tried a similar problem on my own. Having room in my schedule to go back and work through those questions was helpful.
Suggested Improvements
One thing I would have liked is an optional week-by-week pacing guide. A sample schedule showing when to aim to finish each unit and when to set aside time for review would make it easier to plan the course around other classes.
Hidden Details
Something that might surprise a new student is how much the pace can vary from one lesson to the next. A lesson might make sense right away, but the practice questions can take longer than you expect. I’d tell a new student to plan time for both.
