Preparatory focus and individual attention

I don't know how much SJK influenced my area of study at university. Maybe a bit. That was more personal interest and family influence. SJK definitely did influence the choice of university because SJK is a university preparatory school. So pretty much everyone goes to college or university after they graduate. A lot of students go to Western, Queens, and McGill, and some go west, but those are the really big ones.

There are many reasons to choose St. John’s-Kilmarnok. If you really want to take education seriously and go to a high-class institution after high school or whatever you want to do to be successful after high school, I would really recommend SJK. It makes you work hard and makes you want to learn because everyone around you wants to learn and wants you to succeed. If you want to be in a small community, it's a great place because the classes are very small. One of my classes had three people in it, so we were really able to foster relationships. And then I really think that the location was great, being in the country with fresh air. We had a pond that made it kind of diverse in what you could do outside.

I honestly think the people really made my experience there. Most of my classmates were all very focused and motivated to do something great after high school, whether that was going to college or not. But a lot of people wanted to go to university and were motivated to work really hard, which made me work hard. I have to do what my classmates are doing because we work together a lot and just want everyone to succeed. It was the International Baccalaureate Programme, which is very hard. We went through hard times together, which made it feel a family.

In some respects I feel conflicted about the size of the school. The size was kind of a drawback when it came to going to university because I felt like I wasn't prepared for the social aspect and the sheer size of a university class and being around that many people. But at the same time it was nice from a learning perspective to have small classes. So I don't know if I could say that I would change that about the school.

As an International Baccalaureate accredited school, SJK follows the principles of an IB continuum curriculum which starts in Junior Kindergarten. This is an advantage for families who have come internationally to Canada. Our children are part of the Primary Years Programme and we are already seeing the benefits of the curriculum continuum. This will be especially helpful through the MYP and leading to the DP years. Starting in Junior Kindergarten, our son's teacher hosted career day where parents were invited to the class to share information about careers, jobs, and passions. This was an influential day for the young learners to exemplify lifelong learning. At this point, it seems as though the academic strategies taught at SJK will prepare our children for post-secondary next steps, although it will be more evident as they progress through the grades.

Influential teachers and personal growth

Insights from students reveal that influential teachers and a supportive learning environment at St. John’s-Kilmarnock significantly shape personal development and career choices.

My chemistry teacher at St. John’s-Kilmarnock School in Grade 11 is the single most influential person on my career path thus far in my academic career. I guess the story kind of starts at the end of Grade 10. I had decided to take standard level chemistry, as I thought I had heard that higher-level chemistry was a challenge and that it was difficult, and I kind of just steered away from the challenge. During our parent-teacher interviews, she suggested to myself and my parents that I consider switching to higher-level chemistry, as she didn't think that I was being challenged enough in standard level. Of course, being a Grade 11 student, wanting to have an easy ride, I was a little bit averse to that concept at the start, but after a bit more thought, I decided, ‘You know what? Let's give it a try.’

My experience at St. John's-Kilmarnock School definitely shaped the person that I am in terms of academics and those kinds of skills. My literacy and writing skills and communication skills were largely shaped by my time at SJK. Maybe also my ability to connect with people close to me. But there was one drawback. When I first went to university, I felt like my time at SJK had shaped me so that I wasn't used to being in such a large school. I just felt like a number. And then, sitting in this lecture room of 900 people, you feel a little insignificant. It's kind of overwhelming. But that has changed. It took a year at university to adjust to that sort of thing.
