The school excels at a well rounded education. They emphasize topics and learnings that are suited to a girl's education, including building leadership abilities & confidence. The school is becoming a leader in STEM education, providing many opportunities for the student body to be exposed to studies in those fields, supported by both extra curricular activities and real-life examples of women in those fields. The small class sizes and personal attention that each girl receives really does create a personal learning environment, where a girl can excel and work to overcome a difficulty at the same time. We would not call the academic environment rigorous or competitive, as it isn't focused solely on marks. A large part of being a successful student at the school focuses on building bonds outside the classroom, and within the community. This is both a strength and a weakness as many expect a high degree of academic achievement, and this doesn't seem to be the only focus of education in the junior and middle school.
The adcademics at SMS are very good. SMS is the only all-girl school in Canada that focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and has put a tremendous amount of resources (human, physical and financial) towards implementing a strong STEM curriculum and providing activities that enable girls at all ages (from JK to Grade 12) to engage in STEM-related activities (computers/devices, robotics, science fair projects starting in Gr 5, etc.). So far, I feel very confident that SMS is providing our daughters with a balanced yet forward thinking academic program that encourages them to use their voice, promotes both independent and team learning in a positive learning enviroment.
Our daughter is only in kindergarten however the skills and subjects she has been exposed to and able to focus on both in the junior program and this year in kindergarten have been greatly varied. I am particularly impressed with the stem program and how both nature and technology are used to create a balance within the curriculum.
There is a well-rounded academic program. The fine arts, social science and STEAM courses are equally valued. Small class sizes provided lots of opportunity for individual learning and student leadership.
