Interview with The Dunblaine School PARENT, Glenn Woods
Glenn, a parent at The Dunblaine School, shared his perspective on the school’s experienced, supportive staff, inclusive community, individualized learning approaches, social-emotional growth, and leadership opportunities that help children with learning differences thrive.
Highlights from the interview
Most of the teachers at Dunblaine have years of experience and specialized training. They are always looking for new opportunities, open to new ideas, and willing to work with associated professionals like occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists, incorporating some of those methods and supports into the program.
The consultant at Dunblaine provided options based on our child’s profile and her needs, helping us identify where she might be best supported.
The environment at Dunblaine for a child with learning differences was incredible. Coming from a more traditional setting, our daughter sometimes felt outside the group. But almost immediately upon joining Dunblaine, she found a community where she could be comfortable being herself, without worrying about her difficulties or struggles.
What she appreciates most about Dunblaine is the small, inclusive community and the friendships she’s developed. The staff truly understand that each child learns differently, and they provide different structures and supports to help each student reach their potential. There’s no judgment, just a welcoming and understanding environment among staff, students, and other parents who are navigating similar challenges.
The key values of the school are inclusivity, non-judgmental support, warmth, and community development. Dunblaine provides individualized approaches for each child, rather than a one-size-fits-all model.
There isn’t a “typical” family or child at Dunblaine. Families come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, but all share the desire for a school that genuinely understands and supports their child’s learning journey.
Our daughter has benefited from the small community in terms of leadership opportunities and participation in annual events, which are inclusive and bring everyone together.
For families deciding on a school, visiting the campus, speaking with staff and parents, and spending time in the community are essential steps. There is always a leap of faith involved, but doing this homework ensures that the school is the right fit.
