She reflected on how the school's emphasis on belonging, individualized support, and strong relationships helped her build confidence, embrace challenges, and develop lasting connections with students and teachers, while fostering a sense of camaraderie that continued long after graduation.
Highlights from the interview
It was just a really wonderful atmosphere. Everyone was very friendly, and you had such great connections with the teachers. There were great kids there, and everyone was there for similar reasons.
Every morning, I looked forward to going to school because I knew I was going somewhere where I belonged, where people were happy to see me, and where everyone was very friendly. It was just very nice to go to that school every day.
They helped students become better students but also empowered them to do the hard things. They let students know that they were there for them if they needed help and that they would help them complete assignments, as well as give them the courage to raise their hands in class and ask questions.
Everyone was welcome, from all walks of life and all different backgrounds. If you were there, that was your space. It was your space as much as anyone else's, and you belonged there.
My perspective has only gotten better, and I've grown fonder of the school the longer I've been away from it.
There were so many clubs that you couldn't join all of them as one person. There were options for everyone.
When I left, it felt like I was leaving a family because I had a family there. I think what was definitely unique about the school was the sense of camaraderie.
I'd say the camaraderie was definitely a unique experience because I never really found that anywhere else except at that school. The camaraderie wasn't just between students. It was also very strong between students and teachers.
They really care about the new students joining the school and want you to feel very welcome. If you're someone who has struggled in the public school system for a variety of reasons… the school understands that and wants you to have a much better experience than you did at the school you're leaving.
It's a very collaborative atmosphere. You're going to have collaborative discussions with your classmates and your teacher. It's not a lecture-based environment at all.
