(5) Student Experience
The YMCA Academy continues to be an incredibly positive experience for our son and for our whole family. As a child with both physical and neurodivergent challenges, he has often had to work harder than others just to feel comfortable in a classroom—so what stands out most about the YMCA is how genuinely inclusive it is. He is known, accepted, and valued by his classmates, teachers, and staff, and that sense of belonging is what makes him want to show up each day and keep learning. The school’s caring, supportive approach has sparked his curiosity, encouraged him to share what he’s learning at home, and helped him discover the areas that truly light him up. We are deeply grateful for the YMCA Academy, and we can honestly say it has helped our son believe in himself and his future.
Why The YMCA Academy?
Before choosing The YMCA Academy, we tried other schools in an effort to find the right environment for our son’s unique needs. Our first experience with the YMCA was a tour of the middle school program, and from the moment we walked in, we felt how welcoming and student-centred the community was—focused on helping every child thrive, regardless of the challenges they face. The smaller class sizes, along with thoughtful conversations with teachers and staff about how they would support our son’s individual learning needs, gave us the confidence to take a leap of faith and enroll him in middle school. That experience was so positive that continuing with the YMCA for high school became an easy and natural decision.
Expectations vs. Reality
The YMCA Academy has met—and exceeded—our expectations. Teachers and staff accommodate a wide range of student needs while keeping every student engaged and connected to the community. In the past, we have seen how difficult it can be for a school to support students with challenges while also ensuring they feel fully included. The YMCA Academy not only meets that challenge; it surpasses it. The Academy also takes extra steps to offer field trips, day trips, assemblies, and extracurricular activities that are welcoming and accessible to students of all grades and abilities. Students across grades interact regularly, and the respect and friendships they show one another are evident throughout the school. Ultimately, when a student feels they truly belong, high school becomes not just more manageable, but more joyful, meaningful, and full of opportunity.
Your Advice
To see how special the YMCA Academy is, I strongly recommend taking a tour and observing the school in action. Pay close attention to the day-to-day interactions among students, teachers, and staff. You will quickly get a feel for the genuine sense of community. If possible, bring your child along so they can experience the Academy for themselves. The school works hard to make students feel known, valued, and included. That feeling of belonging creates the kind of learning environment where kids can grow in confidence and begin to realize what they are capable of.
(5) School Leadership
We have really appreciated the leadership at the YMCA Academy because they don’t just talk about inclusion—they actively work to make it happen. From the moment you walk in, you can feel that every student is welcomed and seen for their strengths, and the administration sets that tone across the school. When we have had questions or concerns, we found the leadership team easy to approach and refreshingly transparent about what’s going on and what options are available. Instead of a one-size-fits-all response, they look for practical solutions that keep students supported and fully part of the community, especially those who might struggle in a traditional setting. Communication with families is consistent and clear, and they make real efforts to build connections through regular updates and chances for parents to engage. Overall, we’ve felt listened to, respected, and confident that the school is always working toward what’s best for students.
(4.5) Teaching
We have never seen teachers who show more compassion in their work. They consistently go above and beyond, and what has meant the most to our family is how flexible they are with their teaching styles to meet students where they’re at. When our son needed a different way to show what he knew, extra time, or support with a physical or cognitive challenge, they didn’t hesitate to adjust, problem-solve, and find creative accommodations that actually worked. They also take the time to connect learning to student interests, which helped our son feel comfortable participating and sharing his ideas. The feedback we receive is detailed and personal, and the staff are always available to talk things through with students and parents, so nothing falls through the cracks. This student-centred flexibility has made a real difference in our son’s confidence and academic success.
(4.5) Academics
I would describe The YMCA Academy’s academic program as supportive, flexible, and strongly focused on individual student success. The school offers essential core subjects while adapting instruction and assessment to meet diverse learning needs, including the use of assistive technology and alternative formats for demonstrating learning. Teachers are deeply committed, closely monitoring each student’s progress and providing timely support when challenges arise. The academic culture is inclusive and encouraging, fostering confidence, open dialogue, and active engagement in learning. Given the school’s small size and the complex learning profiles of many students, there are natural limits to the range and specialization of courses that can be offered. However, this is offset by careful academic planning and individualized guidance to ensure students are well prepared for their next steps after high school.
(5) Extracurriculars
The YMCA Academy provides a wide range of meaningful extracurricular opportunities that support both personal growth and enjoyment. The school offers activities spanning academics, arts, sports, and creative interests, giving students multiple ways to get involved based on their strengths and curiosities. There are opportunities for more structured, skill-building experiences, such as clubs that develop communication, teamwork, and leadership, as well as relaxed options focused on fun and social connection. One of the school’s strengths is its willingness to introduce new activities when students show interest, making participation feel student-driven and inclusive. Overall, these programs create a positive context for developing confident, well-rounded students outside the classroom.
(5) Students
I would describe the student body at The YMCA Academy as small, close-knit, and deeply compassionate. The manageable size creates a calm and supportive atmosphere where students feel safe, understood, and genuinely known by both peers and staff. What stands out most is the strong sense of belonging that develops early on through shared experiences such as orientation trips, spirit days, assemblies, and social events. Students interact with kindness and empathy, and meaningful friendships often form among those who face similar learning, social, or emotional challenges. This shared understanding allows connections to grow more quickly and deeply, helping students feel less isolated and more accepted. The school culture celebrates participation while respecting individual comfort levels, offering alternatives when needed. The overall spirit is one of inclusion, pride, and mutual support.
(5) School Life
I would describe the overall quality of student life at the YMCA Academy as exceptionally positive and supportive. Since enrolling, my son has shown greater enthusiasm for learning and feels genuinely motivated to attend school. The engaging classroom discussions, hands-on learning, and enrichment through field trips make academics meaningful and interesting. Beyond the classroom, clubs, social events, and overnight trips add balance and enjoyment, helping students build confidence and independence. What matters most is that my son feels safe, accepted, and understood. I am at a loss on how the YMCA Academy could improve student life, but I have confidence that the teachers and staff of the school are always exploring new avenues to accomplish that objective. Knowing that the school takes all the steps necessary to include all students at all events is amazing.
(4.5) Community
What stands out most about The YMCA Academy’s broader community is how intentional and inclusive it feels for both students and families. The school actively fosters respect and connection, and parents are truly welcomed as partners in school life. There are many opportunities to be involved, from parent council and school events to educational evenings and social gatherings that bring families and staff together. Communication is strong and transparent, which helps parents feel informed and connected at all times. A particularly meaningful initiative is the youth exchange program, where YMCA students visit a partner school in another region of Canada and then host visiting partner students in Toronto. Parents collaborate to organize activities and hosting, which strengthens relationships across families and builds a wider sense of community.
(4.5) School Location
For us, the school location is a positive – how it is connected to the community and how accessible it is. It is easily accessible using public transit, and after-hours parking is readily available for evening events. Located in the heart of the city, the school feels integrated into the broader community rather than isolated. Students regularly move beyond the building, using public transit or walking to reach field trip destinations, which helps them develop independence and confidence in navigating the city. Being housed within the Central YMCA of Toronto's main campus location also expands opportunities, giving students access to shared facilities and a vibrant community space. The central location exposes students to the diversity and energy of Toronto, making learning feel connected to real life.
(5) Admissions
My advice to families considering the YMCA Academy is to approach the application process openly and take time to visit the school. From our experience, the process felt collaborative rather than stressful. The admissions team was welcoming, patient, and genuinely interested in determining whether the school was the right fit for our son. We were encouraged to ask questions, could return for more than one visit, and have honest conversations about our son’s needs and strengths. Our son felt comfortable from the very first visit, which gave us confidence in our decision. Overall, the process was smooth, thoughtful, and family-centred, and I wouldn’t change anything about how admissions were handled.
(4.5) University placement and counselling
I found the post-secondary counselling program at The YMCA Academy to be thoughtful, proactive, and highly personalized. Guidance staff met regularly with both students and parents to explore a wide range of Ontario college and university options and to discuss students’ interests, goals, and required supports. This guidance began early, allowing plenty of time for careful planning. We were consistently kept informed about graduation requirements, application timelines, and upcoming steps through clear, ongoing communication. Of particular value were targeted information sessions, including one led by a George Brown College program director, which provided helpful insight into how community college programs operate and what supports are available. Students also attended an annual college fair to explore additional pathways. Even with a full year remaining before graduation, these efforts have left our family feeling better prepared for what lies ahead.
