The big picture on Western Heights Montessori Academy

We summarized the school ourselves

Student-centred programs and an efficient interface with parents have endeared Western Heights to the families that turn to it. Now with seven locations throughout the GTA, it has all the benefits that come from a larger administration team, while also maintaining a close-knit, community feel at each of the schools. Teachers are skilled, qualified, and engaging. A strong core Montessori program is augmented with language instruction, including Mandarin, and music beginning at the toddler level. On-site catering, with lots of healthy options, is also a draw.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

Voted as the best child care centre in Oakville and Mississauga, we believe that every child is special and unique. It is our mission to bring out the full potential in every one of our students by offering a customized, engaged, and enriched program in a close-knit, caring environment."

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

At Western Heights Montessori, our dedicated teachers and personalized programs ensure every child's experience is unique. Our caring educators, all Montessori-trained or ECE-certified, provide essential support and development during their early years.

We follow the Montessori method, allowing children to learn at their own pace and fostering independence. In addition to the core curriculum, we offer extracurricular activities like music, Mandarin, French, yoga, and library time, enhancing skills through programs such as 'Show and Share' and holiday concerts.

Communication is key; we keep parents informed with daily reports, weekly newsletters, and regular meetings. Our open-door policy encourages involvement in events like Parent Curriculum Night. We also engage with the community through initiatives like the Terry Fox Walk, Toys for Tots, and local food drives.

At WHMA, we are committed to enriching your child's educational journey and building strong partnerships with parents.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

At Western Heights Montessori, we prioritize community engagement and collaboration, which we believe are essential to our core values. This commitment fosters open communication through daily and weekly updates, ensuring families stay connected.

We actively involve parents in their child's education, inviting them to participate in fundraisers and events. This collaboration helps us create an inclusive community focused on children's well-being and development.

To maintain an engaged environment, we interview prospective families to ensure they share our vision. We seek families eager to participate in their child’s learning journey, recognizing that this approach may not suit everyone.

Ultimately, this commitment helps us build a nurturing school community where parents, teachers, staff, and students work together to support each child's growth. At Western Heights Montessori, we aim to provide a holistic and enriched educational experience for every child.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Our journey has been shaped by key milestones that define who we are today. Grounded in our core values, we focus on creating an enriched program with engaged parents, fostering holistic learning experiences.

We began by establishing our core values and grew by acquiring childcare schools that aligned with our philosophy. Transforming these into Western Heights Montessori campuses ensured consistent, high-quality education across all locations.

A pivotal moment was our emphasis on community collaboration, which strengthened relationships and enriched the learning experience. In under ten years, this commitment has led to seven campuses serving 500 students, reflecting the trust and satisfaction of our families.

Our core values guide everything we do, from our passionate teachers to our enriched curriculum and open communication. We look forward to continuing our journey while remaining true to the principles that define us.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

At Western Heights Montessori, we welcome students who thrive in a hands-on learning environment tailored to their individual needs. Our school is a perfect fit for curious and independent students who love to explore and ask questions. Children who enjoy working at their own pace and taking initiative in their learning will benefit greatly from our individualized approach. Students who are eager to discover new things and pursue their interests will flourish in our supportive environment.

Families who value a well-rounded approach to education that nurtures academic, social, and emotional growth will find that our values align with theirs. Parents who are willing to actively engage with the school and participate in their child’s learning journey will feel at home in our community. Those who appreciate consistent updates and open communication will benefit from our regular reports, newsletters, and parent-teacher interactions.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Our school thrives on inclusivity and active parental involvement. Families who are not interested in collaborating closely with teachers and participating in their child's educational journey may find our approach challenging. We believe in building a supportive and engaged community; therefore, parents who prefer a more ‘hands-off’ approach might not be comfortable with our level of involvement and communication.

Our focus on nurturing independent, curious learners through a flexible and personalized curriculum is designed for those who value a holistic and collaborative approach to education. If these priorities do not align with what you seek in an educational experience, then we may not be the best fit for you.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families choose Western Heights Montessori for several compelling reasons. Our customized, enriched program tailors learning to each child’s needs, allowing them to progress at their own pace and fostering a love for learning. Parents appreciate the personalized attention and diverse extracurricular activities, including music, languages, and library time.

Our proven track record enhances our appeal; families trust our strong reputation for excellent outcomes and fostering independence. They know their children will receive high-quality care in a nurturing environment, supported by our dedicated, Montessori-trained teachers.

Many parents describe Western Heights Montessori as a "home away from home." Our warm, caring atmosphere makes students feel safe, valued, and supported. This sense of community and belonging is essential for families seeking a holistic and emotionally supportive environment for their child's early years.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

In the public eye, Western Heights Montessori is seen as a caring institution that is an active part of the community. When people think about our school, they often imagine a place where children are nurtured in a warm, supportive and safe environment. Our reputation for fostering a strong sense of belonging and collaboration is well-known. We are recognized for our dedication to holistic education, where academic, social, and emotional growth are equally valued. This image reflects our core values and commitment to creating a nurturing, inclusive community where every child can thrive.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

One aspect of Western Heights Montessori that is often underappreciated is how effectively we cultivate children's independence. While families may recognize our emphasis on self-paced learning and individualized attention, they might not fully grasp the great impact this has on their child's development.

After just a few weeks or months at our school, many children exhibit remarkable growth in independence and self-confidence. Our Montessori approach encourages children to take initiative, make choices, and learn through hands-on experiences. This not only enhances their academic skills but also fosters a sense of responsibility and self-reliance.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

Families are often surprised by the deep involvement of parents and the community at Western Heights Montessori. Our commitment to engagement exceeds expectations. From the beginning, families see their vital role through volunteer opportunities and collaboration with teachers.

We prioritize giving back, organizing initiatives with local organizations to instill the importance of community service and social responsibility in our students.

Parents appreciate our transparent communication, including daily reports, weekly newsletters, and prompt responses, keeping them informed about their child's progress.

Families also enjoy the variety of events we host—educational workshops, cultural celebrations, and parent-teacher nights—that enrich student experiences and strengthen our community. At Western Heights Montessori, there’s always something happening!

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

At Western Heights Montessori, our recent changes reflect our commitment to enhancing early years learning and expanding educational offerings. Here’s how we’re evolving:
We’ve expanded our curriculum to include elementary education, allowing students to continue their Montessori journey and ensuring a seamless transition from early childhood to elementary school in the same enriched environment.
Our dedication to providing an enriched curriculum remains strong. We focus on enhancing programs for infants, toddlers, pre-Casa, Casa, and elementary students, nurturing their academic, social, and emotional growth.
We’ve also introduced a French Immersion program, offering students the chance to learn French in an immersive setting. This addition boosts language skills and cultural awareness, supporting their development and preparing them for a globalized world. At WHMA, we are committed to fostering a comprehensive and engaging educational experience for every child.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

In the coming years, Western Heights Montessori plans key changes to enhance our commitment to enriching every child. These changes will strengthen our unique approach and provide greater value to families.

We will enrich our curriculum by integrating digital literacy into early learning programs, equipping children with essential skills for the digital age. This technology will complement our Montessori methods, helping students thrive in a digital world.

We also aim to broaden our multilingual offerings and enhance our art and music programs, providing diverse creative experiences and fostering a well-rounded education. Expanding these programs will allow students to explore and develop their artistic talents.

To improve communication with families, we will leverage technology and AI tools for efficient, personalized, and timely updates. By adopting advanced communication methods, we aim to keep families informed and engaged in their child’s educational journey.
