Durham was founded in 1984 in order to address learners who are at the top of their peer group and require an enriched program in order to reach their potentials. Families are drawn by the small class sizes—they average between 8 and 12 students—as well as the full grade continuum, from preschool through Grade 12. The nursery and primary levels are taught through a Montessori approach, and while it’s not carried through the upper grades, the values are nevertheless shared throughout the school. Students arrive to an academically inflected environment, and a peer group that shares a predilection to achievement. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a close-knit, challenging yet supportive instructional environment.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.
Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. In Casa 3 our students will recognize all of their phonetic sounds, short vowel, long vowel, diagraphs and they will be progressing through readers and completing the corresponding comprehension worksheets, working at a grade1 level. Each year our students from grade 1 to 8 research a topic to write a speech and they compete and present in our annual speech contest at our school and in the province. Our secondary school teaches English at the Academic level. Our schools purchase Canadian resources that cover penmanship, cursive writing, spelling tests, grammar and literature.

Programs that balance systematic and process approaches equally likely have an emphasis on giving young students ample opportunities to write, while providing supplementary class-wide instruction in grammar, parts of sentences, and various writing strategies.
The process approach to teaching beginner writing aims to get students writing “real things” as much as possible and as soon as possible. The goal is to create the right environmental conditions to encourage a love of writing and a motivation to write well. With children invested in the writing process -- through assignments children find meaningful -- students are then given feedback on how they can improve.
Our students start penmanship at age 3. They start with sandpaper letters and then start simple journal entries. In Casa 2 (age 4) our students focus on penmanship and daily printing as well as simple journals. In Casa 3 the students continue their daily penmanship, journal writing. Casa 3 is introduced to copying from the board and writing simple sentences in preparation for grade 1. The Montessori program also focuses on building words (spelling). Daily penmanship/cursive is a focus for students grades 1 to 8 as well as weekly spelling tests.
Hand Writing Without Tears curriculum is utilized in primary grades to help develop handwriting skills utilizing a multi-sensory handwriting instruction. In junior and intermediate grades Writers' Workshops are used with monthly themes to encourage a variety of different writing styles and interests.

A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Asperger's Syndrome On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour. | ||||

Troubled behaviour / troubled teens roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. This can lead to behavioural and emotional issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behaviour, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety. | ||||
Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life. | ||||
Clinical anxiety This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror. | ||||

Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. Oak Bridge Academy is an alternative school structured around the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis designed specifically for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Applied Behaviour Analysis focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place and is a scientifically validated approach to understanding behaviour and how our behaviour is affected by the environment. The core principles of behavioural science used at Oak Bridge Academy include contingency management, goal setting, self-control, mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT). Each of these principles, when used in combination, will contribute to developing a resilient and flexible student. All students have an IEP and accommodations and modifications are all individualized depending on the identified needs of the student. Social and/or emotional regulation goals are alternative goals on the students' IEP.

We provide services for children with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and other related learning exceptionalities. Full-day, ten month (September to June) programming with high teacher-to-student ratios is offered to children from grades one through nine. One on one support is not provided in our regular tuition formula.
We suggest that families come in for a tour and have their child visit at no obligation for a morning or a day. D.E.P.S and Durham Academy students are required to bring in previous report cards. Durham Academy Secondary School students are required to answer simple questions in written form and have an interview with the Principal.
Oak Bridge Academy Application Process
The application process helps us gain important information about prospective students and their families. This process will help all parties determine if Oak Bridge Academy is the appropriate placement for their child and family.
As Oak Bridge Academy has limited space, we encourage you to apply early to avoid being placed on a wait list.
Step 1: The Application Form
This form is to be completed by the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the applicant along with a non-refundable $100.00 application fee. This fee is non-refundable due to the amount of staff time required to review and assess the application. Please be sure to also send along copies of the student’s:
current IEP
last two report cards
any behavioural or psychologists reports
Once the application form, $100.00 fee and student information has all been submitted, you will be contacted to set up an on-site interview.
Step 2: The Interview and Trial Day
The interview will take place at the school with the parents while your child spends a full day in a fully integrated classroom setting. This step will allow Oak Bridge staff to determine the child’s strengths, goals and support level before recommending potential placement.
Step 3: Admission Decision
Admission decisions are made after a family interview and assessment of the applicant.
If Oak Bridge Academy feels the applicant would benefit from the behaviour curriculum, admissions will be approved and the application will be forwarded a registration package.
Step 4: School Registration
Your registration will not be considered complete until Oak Bridge Academy receives the following:
