    Developmental Priorities

    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.
    Emotional
The goal is to cultivate "emotionally intelligent and confident individuals, capable of leading both themselves and others."

    Progressive

    Curriculum pace

    Student-paced
The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.
    Accelerated
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Academic
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

    Our Take

    APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

Every private school exists to meet the needs of a specific set of learners, which is something that on the whole differentiates private education from the public system. And in that sense, you can’t find a better example than Applewood. It isn’t the right school for all students, but for a specific set of students—principally ones that require therapeutic support and individual learning programs—it is unequalled. When students arrive at Applewood they find themselves in an environment in which they are at the centre of the program, not somewhere ancillary to that. They also find a staff that is expert in their needs, and can envision their path to success. It’s a great school, and a great story. The ideal student is the one who is struggling elsewhere, and who can benefit from a dedicated, empathetic, specialized environment.

    KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

Private schools, of course, intend to offer an alternative, and Kendellhurst is a great example of that. The program is founded in an approach to ECE that borrows the best from Montessori and other alternative approaches, yet does it in a very tailored, intentional way in order to best address the needs of the students that attend. It's less about doctrine than meeting the specific needs of student population. There are three locations, though all feel a piece of the communities that they sit within, something that the Streetsville location is a particularly good example of. The educational context is local, small, and integrated with the needs of the families that enroll here. The feel is homey, comfortable, and supportive, and camp sessions allow families to extend that experience into the summer months, providing an opportunity for continuity between school terms. Organic meals and after school programs are included with tuition, something that can provide a welcome support to the daily management of family life.

What do you do differently and uniquely well?

    APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

"Applewood Academy stands alone among schools, beginning with our clinical orientation. While other schools have special education departments, Applewood starts with a clinical program used to shape personalized educational and residential programming. This results in more comprehensive clinical plans for each student and a much greater likelihood of success in delivering individualized care and personal growth. Applewood elementary and secondary grades follow the Ontario curriculum."

    KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

"Kendellhurst Academy offers a boutique, small school context where every member of our team knows your child. We limit enrolment to 12-18 students per classroom. This helps us support a positive, fun and safe school experience. We offer house league events and field trips throughout-the-year to cultivate student engagement and friendships beyond the classroom. Our school community is dynamic through elements like parent committee, Private School Athletic Association and more!"

We approach education from a clinical perspective, which means that we can quickly understand and respond to the different challenges of each student. We “get” each and every unique situation. Families quickly gain confidence that we can craft and implement a plan—from accommodation, to education, to social/recreational activities—that is going to work. And it does."

Our ability to make sense of all this information and to map out a clinical program that pulls in the education component is without parallel. Our follow-through with families is just as good. Applewood is never closed during the school year; we are always here to communicate and optimize."

"Kendellhurst is located in the quaint town of Streetsville, Mississauga. We have immense greenery surrounding us with the Credit River and parks close by. We are housed in a former public school building, so we are equipped with a stage, gym and school yards. What might families find surprising about your school?

    APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

"What families find surprising about Applewood Academy is the quality of care. Our materials speak to the level of care that we provide, but experiencing our care first hand is typically a revelation for families. Care for Applewood students doesn’t end after the academic day is done, nor Friday afternoon. From individualized learning plans, to the most suitable accommodation option, to after-school activities that are both fun and build towards a normalized life; care is what we are all about."

    KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

"Parents are often surprised at the level of engagement students have in school life with their friends and teachers. After the school day ends, students often don't want to go home. The question is why? We believe the connectedness of our admin and teaching team with our pedagogy of nurturing the mind and spirit cultivates a culture of care and respect. This aspect coupled with a balanced day of lessons, clubs and events in a safe and robust environment translates into a happy life at school."

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

        Our take: math approach type

        APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

        KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.

Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.

        APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

Pragmatism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes making learning relevant to students’ present-day experience. Assignments tend to centre around projects and tasks rather than argumentative essays; these projects will often have a “real-world” application or relevance. There might be more of a social justice component to a pragmatic program, though that isn’t always the case. Subjects like history and philosophy are still covered/offered, but they play a less prominent role in the overall program than in the case of perennialism. The social sciences (contemporary geography, sociology, psychology, etc), meanwhile, might play a more prominent role in pragmatic programs. The key goals are to make learning progressive and relevant, while teaching students real-life skills and critical thinking.

        KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

These programs represent an equal balance between the perennialist and pragmatic approach to teaching the humanities and social sciences.

        KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

All classrooms have 80 inch digital interactive displays allowing a complete and seamless teaching and learning environment in the evolving digital world. Computers (both Mac and PC) are available to every classroom from preschool to grade 8. Preschool and kindergarten focus on basic usage including phonics games, basic typing and respecting the computer. Grades 1 through 4 have light usage in class with typing tutorials and basic understanding of some programs and apps. Lessons are bi-weekly. Grades 5 to 8 use computers almost daily to assist in research, reports, presenting, printing and typing. Students in grades 5 to 8 also have personal Chromebook using the EDWIN program from Nelson Education.

        APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

The Ministry of Education supports and promotes the participation of students in daily physical activity. Consequently, Applewood Academy must ensure that all elementary students, including students with special needs, have a minimum of 20 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity each school day during instructional time. The goal of daily physical activity is to enable all students to improve or maintain their physical fitness and their overall health and wellness, and to enhance their learning opportunities. Daily physical activity may include walking, active games, yoga, dance, aquatics, sports, and fitness and recreational activities (where facilities permit). In addition to daily physical activity Applewood provides Ontario Curriculum based learning.

        KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

Physical education and staying active are vital to all students. We encourage various team and individual sports, including soccer, floor hockey, basketball, running, track and field, baseball and much more. Kendellhurst has four school house leagues that incorporate all age groups for internal school games and events. We offer monthly rotating classes of yoga, Zumba, box fit and hip hop dance through experienced and specialized instructors. These programs are included in our tuition.

    • PRESCHOOL/K CURRICULUM

      Approach

      Our Take

      KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

      What the school says

      What the school says

      APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

Applewood provides programming for Kindergarten students that is focused on developing the foundations of learning in a supported and structured environment. Students are provided direct instruction programming that is suited to individual needs in conjunction with a mental health supported structured environment. Play based and therapeutic play based activities is an integral part of the programming.

      KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

While Kendellhurst takes a whole child approach to education, we also have a structured and academic curriculum with traditional components such as phonics, reading, printing and lessons on mathematics, science, social studies via theme-based, fun and engaging songs and activities. We have French lessons everyday with a balance of conversational French and vocabulary building, preparing students for our grade level writing, presentations and reading programs in JK-Grade 8. We offer an enriched, well-rounded curriculum with weekly arts (music, drama and visual) and hands-on projects that delve deeper into curriculum strands. Our technology program prepares students for the broader world by incorporating educational software into the Pre-K and Kindergarten curriculums.

    • CURRICULUM PACE

      Our Take

      Our Take

      APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

The main curriculum pace is non-standardized and is HIGHLY responsive to the pacing of individual students, (via differentiated instruction, differentiated assessment, etc). In theory, some students outpace the default/normalized curriculum, while others spend periods "behind schedule" if they need the extra time.

      KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

      What the school says

We tailor the instruction of multiple subjects to meet the individual needs of the students. Cyber learning and technology are used to support and enhance the learning/experience, enticing and encouraging learning that is not well served through traditional educational practices.

      KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

Teachers approach each student as an individual learner and thus work with strengths and challenges to ensure student progress and growth at each grade level. Many of our students move beyond grade level - if they are able to move forward with guidance.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

AAPL works with students who have difficulty functioning within a regular classroom setting due to behavioural, emotional, social, and psychological problems. These students often have been previously diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, depression, learning disabilities, etc.

    KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

Kendellhurst seeks globally minded, engaged and active learners. These are the values we instill in our students. Our students enjoy exciting, robust classes, making great friends, being part of a community, and learning from knowledgeable teachers.

    APPLEWOOD ACADEMY FOR PROGRESSIVE LEARNING

Given our focus on both treatment and academics, AAPL requires the completion of a detailed application form as well as consent to access and review any previous clinical information related to the student's problems (i.e., school, psychological, medical, psychiatric, etc. reports).  This background information, as well as our independent clinical assessment, enables us to develop an individualized treatment and academic plan for the student.

    KENDELLHURST ACADEMY

All students and parent(s) must meet with the admissions officer prior to acceptance. There is a required assessment for all students entering our school.
