    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Reggio Emilia
Reggio Emilia programs aim to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of “projects”, (as opposed to “activities” or “lessons”). Teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. Projects can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. A high degree of parent involvement is also encouraged, particularly when forming curriculums and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).
If you want to learn more about Reggio Emilia education, check out our comprehensive guide.
    Montessori
Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Balmoral Hall is one of those schools that perhaps doesn’t command as significant a profile in the world of private education in Canada, but it should. Established in 1901, it’s seen a few changes along the way, including moves and name changes—it was founded as Havergal College, then later known as Rupert's Land College—as well as amalgamation with the Riverbend School. It’s long been an expression of the civic community, demonstrated by the endowments it’s received through the years. The current campus reflects that; the site was bequeathed to the school by Sir James Aitken, and Aitken house remains in use there today.  More recently, through a significant capital campaign, the school opened Benidickson Centre for Arts & Design. Throughout its life, Balmoral Hall has offered a window onto a wider world, offering innovative programs, and developing its own set of best practices, all of which are in ample evidence today. The boarding program, too, offers an added layer to the student experience, both for day students and those living on site. Instruction is student-centred, hands-on, including a robust internship program to provide real-world experience tailored to students’ interests. Indeed, a primary goal is to allow girls to follow and capitalize on their interests, and the list of alumnae hints at that, given its breadth. Included is senator Patricia Bovey, journalist Ashleigh Banfield, and hockey player Taylor Woods (who, as a member of the Balmoral Hall Blazers, set a number of team records that still stand today). The arts are represented, too, most obviously in Loreena McKennitt and Chantal Kreviazuk, both of whom are alumnae. In so many ways, the school has been doing great work for more than a century.

    ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

Julia Simon founded Alive Montessori in 2001, and she remains very much the head and hands of the school today. She established the school as a means of delivering the Montessori principles, prime among them being the provision of a family-like atmosphere in which to learn. Families who enroll here are drawn to the small size of the school, allowing students to gain a heightened sense of their place within the life of the school. Instruction is personal, with pacing cues taken from the individual students, and a close attention to the talents, perspectives, and interests that they bring with them to the school each day. Students are encouraged to have a voice, and to use it in their daily lives. Numeracy and literacy are important, though passion is, too, something that Simon has rightly built the Alive program around.

Parents, your daughter will one day take her place as a strong, confident woman in a world that wants to listen to her. You've helped her grow, and you've been amazed by her abilities.

You want the best, always. Alumnae and parents of graduates know that we are the best choice for girls' education. We want your best, too."

They choose our school because it is small and welcoming place where every child is appreciated and feels a sense of belonging. In the end of the day, children do not want to go home and arrive each morning with a smile. The hands-one learning and qualified staff are major factors that contribute to our student's success."

  • SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

    Message from school leadership

    Message from school leadership

On behalf of the entire Balmoral Hall School community, I'd like to personally thank you for considering our IB World School for girls, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

    About us

Founded in 1901, with an average annual enrolment of 450 students (Child Care to Grade 12), Balmoral Hall School (BH) is dedicated to the education of girls and young women in preparation for university, and subsequently, for professional careers. Throughout our history and throughout recent years, Balmoral Hall School has welcomed students from around the world, to study and to make themselves at home in our residence. We accept female residence students from Grade 6 through to Grade 12.

Balmoral Hall School offers one of the finest educations in Canada. As a traditional university preparatory school, we are dedicated to helping our students prepare for the university of their choice. This focus begins with our Child Care and Nursery program, which is based on the Reggio Emilia approach. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years (Nursery - Grade 5) and Middle Years (Grades 6 to 10) Programmes aim to enrich our ongoing emphasis on rounded, global education and citizenship. For Grades 11 and 12, Balmoral Hall School offers an Advanced Placement (AP) Program which allows students the ability to pursue university-level courses while still in high school.

Our educational philosophy includes a caring and individualized approach incorporated into a structured school setting. Considerable importance is placed on developing each student's maximum potential using small class sizes and the best teaching staff to help us to achieve our goal.

    Our Boarding Program

Approximately 10% of our school population lives in boarding. Our policy is to accept only a limited number of students from each nationality so that each girl can benefit as much as possible from learning and speaking English and from the Balmoral Hall educational experience. International students have come from as far away as Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the United States, Germany, China, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Israel and Saudi Arabia. The remaining students are from all across Canada and of course, our home province, Manitoba.

Interaction between different cultures is a very important aspect of life at Balmoral Hall School and as many Canadian experiences as possible are made available to our students. Arrangements can also be made for students to tour Canada and visit internationally renowned cities as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver or to arrange winter ski holidays in Banff, Alberta or Whistler, British Columbia. Fortunately, Manitoba is located in the middle of Canada and is in close proximity to the rest of Canada and the United States.

We look forward to the opportunity to speak with you further about the excellent opportunities offered here at Balmoral Hall School.

    Sincerely,

    Joanne Kamins
    Head of School

At Alive Montessori & Private School our mission is based on the following premises:

    • The word “educate” comes from Latin roots meaning “to lead out”. As such, we believe that it is our duty as educators to bring out the innate skills and talents of the children in our charge.

    • Every child is a unique individual deserving of the best education possible.

    • Every child has an innate desire to learn that must be cultivated, not blunted.

    • Every child has his or her natural interests and strengths.

    • Learning occurs at varying rates and every child learns at his or her own optimum pace.

    • The Basics of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic are vitally important as these still form the foundation for all future learning.

    • The goal of education is to give every child the tools he or she will need to become self-reliant and successful in life.

    • Education does not have to be a dreary and dull activity. Done properly, learning is fun.

Our goal at Alive Montessori & Private School is to provide the best possible start to our children through proper education, thereby instilling a life-long love of learning in every child. We aim to create a safe, caring and fun environment where every child will learn and will become more and more confident as he or she gains in abilities.

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

      ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.

      Our Take: secondary curriculum type

      Our Take: secondary curriculum type

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Some private schools offer International Baccalaureate (IB) programming. The "Diploma Programme" is offered to students in the final two years of high school, while the "Primary Years Programme" (ages 3 to 12) and "Middle Years Programme" (ages 11 to 16) serve as preparation for the diploma program.

      ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

Waldorf schools are available from preschool to Grade 12, though they are most popular at the younger ages. Waldorf schools are unmistakably "progressive". Rudolf Steiner, their intellectual forefather, believed the educator's first task should be to help students develop an aesthetic appreciation for life and learning. Sometimes incorrectly conflated with Montessori schools, Waldorf schools focus on developing the "whole child" - emphasizing collaborative, hands-on learning, along with the arts and music, which are integrated into other areas of study.

What the school says about their curriculum

What the school says about their curriculum

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

Our teachers understand how girls learn. They are dedicated to bringing out the best in each girl, by encouraging her strengths and providing support in areas that are more difficult for her. While our programs are demanding and our expectations high, the atmosphere is co-operative and supportive. It is an environment in which every girl feels free to believe in herself, to speak out and take academic risks.

      ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

The Montessori method provides hands-on learning in a stimulating school environment that enables children to learn more quickly and thoroughly. With far more interesting material than a traditional classroom, children are allowed much more opportunity to explore and develop their own interests and abilities. Learning occurs at their own pace in small classrooms and is geared towards developing competence – and thus, confidence. The mixed age groupings encourage children to cooperate with and help each other, while enabling the older children to learn responsibility and leadership.

These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.

        ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.

Maria Montessori wrote, "Contrary to the usually accepted idea, writing precedes reading." This is because the child must re-create something to be able to understand it. Thus she developed a very strong program for writing, utilizing sandpaper letters, metal templates, and drills to complement her reading program. We develop the child's ability first, to print, and then to be able to do cursive writing.

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. The curriculum is often organized according to the underlying logic of the content: history might be taught sequentially, for example (as students move through the grades).

Perennialism in the humanities and social sciences emphasizes the idea of education being a kind of “conversation” between generations, and so frequently turns to “Great Works” and “Big Ideas” for teaching-content. Perennialist programs approach past works on their own terms; as if they might actually help students understand “today” better. Past works are not viewed as mere historical artifacts, but as gateways to a deeper understanding of the human condition. History (and, by extension, the humanities in general) therefore plays a large role in perennialist curriculums, though social sciences like economics, psychology, and sociology can still be taught. There is a strong Liberal Arts bent to perennialist programs. The key goals are to develop critical thinking, a strong foundation of core knowledge (or “cultural literacy”), and persuasion skills through informed debate and extensive practice in essay writing.

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

        ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.

We believe strongly that computers should not replace the training and disciplining of the mind required to fully master the basics of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. It is much more important for young children to develop the spatial discernment and fine motor skills required for writing than the ability to punch letters on a keyboard. While this concept may seem quaint or “old-fashioned”, it results in children who can easily and rapidly translate these skills over into using a computer when the time comes.

      Our Take

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

      ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

If you want to learn more about Montessori education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also check out our guide to Montessori preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

      ALIVE MONTESSORI & PRIVATE SCHOOL

Our belief is that children are being given labels at an alarming rate, and that most "learning" or "developmental" disabilities stem from causes that have nothing to do with anything being inherently wrong with the child. Previous poor teaching, poor diet, lack of exercise or discipline can cause non-optimum behaviour that can be corrected; we have done so many times.

ACADEMICS: None. We are usually able to turn around a child's failed education within a short time. (Our view is that almost all "Learning Disability" comes from improper teaching and can be corrected.) Reading comprehension and math testing will be done before enrolment to assess the correct starting point. BEHAVIOR: As with academics, our experience is that virtually all "ADHD" and behaviour-type problems are "learned" behaviours (often caused by a poor learning environment itself) and are not signs of deficiencies within the child. We have turned around many students with a little bit of discipline and by creating a stimulating, caring school that makes learning fun.
