    Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
     
    Reggio Emilia
    Reggio Emilia programs aim to develop curiosity and problem-solving skills through the liberal use of “projects”, (as opposed to “activities” or “lessons”). Teachers design projects for children around their demonstrated interests. Projects can be geared to an individual student, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. Projects can last from a few days to the whole year. Art is strongly emphasized and is typically incorporated into every project. Teachers actively participate in projects alongside students, rather than sitting back and observing. A high degree of parent involvement is also encouraged, particularly when forming curriculums and project plans (which happens throughout the academic year).

    MONTVERDE ACADEMY

    Founded in 1912, Montverde offers a unique blend of old and new, tradition and innovation. It’s a preparatory school in the classic sense in that the students who enroll here are preparing to advance to post-secondary study. The academic and co-curricular programs are broad, as are the athletics, which in some sense define the school. Montverde was voted in 2017 by USA Today as the best basketball program of the decade. The campus is, frankly, stunning, with all the necessary supports and then some for students looking to learn and grow with others who, like them, prise academic achievement. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a vibrant, extensive learning community, and able to make the most of a broad, varied offering.

    The school was created to fulfill a vision of Pastor Verne Wilson and the elders of White Rock Christian Fellowship, though has grown to appeal to a broader set of Christian and academic ideals rather than those of a specific congregation.       Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

        Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

        Our lower school curriculum is Math in Focus, the Singapore Method. This method focuses on mastery of specific concepts at a very deep level. In middle school, the comprehensive nature of the mathematics program meets the needs of each student. It also allows our students to easily transition from one level of mathematics to the next level within the Middle School division and then into the Upper School division. Beginning in grade 9, students are taught courses to enhance and continue the study of mathematics and provide a college level foundation to those who are not aspiring to a math, science or technical major.

        Being a Reader is the first piece of the curriculum which integrates reading instruction with the social learning needed to build a caring classroom community. This program combines the strengths of whole-class and small group instruction to develop confident readers who love to read, understand what they read, and can discuss their ideas and opinions with others.         At WRCA, we follow a Balanced Literacy model to teach our younger students how to read. Students start by gaining confidence and a love of reading through reading age-appropriate literature in ways that spark curiosity in their minds. They are taught and encouraged to infer, use context clues, look at the pictures, and find known words to help them understand what they are reading. Alongside this, students are actively learning the importance of sounding out letters and syllables of words while reading. Creating classroom experiences that develop a love of writing and allow children to express their thinking requires thoughtful and intentional instruction. Using authentic children’s literature, the program provides support for creating a Collaborative Classroom environment where teachers facilitate student discussion, provide a model for the respectful exchange of ideas, and help students develop their own voice.

        Our young students at WRCA learn to write through a Process Approach in which they are given ample opportunities to nurture and expand their unique ideas and put them into words. Learning to write with specific skills and proper grammar play a role in learning to write, however students are first encouraged to simply write to get their ideas out without the worry and pressure of ‘doing it right.’ We believe that children will gain confidence and the ability to learn about the form and function of sentences once they first have a love of writing and they are invested in the process of strengthening their abilities.       Highly motivated students are attracted to Montverde Academy for our demanding academics and stellar athletic and fine arts programs. Montverde Academy has 33 Advanced Placement courses, over 13 honor courses, and nine different honor societies. We partner with several colleges and universities allowing students access to special programs such as the Health Sciences Collegiate Academy. One-hundred percent of Montverde Academy graduates are accepted into four year universities. Our students matriculate to elite colleges and universities across the country and the world.

    WRCA is looking for students and families who seek to transform their world for Christ through high quality, internationally-minded, holistic education from a Biblical Christian worldview. Students need to desire to become inquirers who learn independently and with others; knowledgeable across a range of disciplines; thinkers who can analyze and take responsible actions and communicators who express themselves confidently and creatively. A WRCA student needs to be passionate about the gospel, humanity, living a balanced life, and their future knowing they possess the skills to achieve this with wisdom, compassion and joy.

    • Apply by completing the online application and paying the fee of $100.
    • Request an official copy of the applicant’s transcripts.
    • Lower School – Please request transcripts from your current school for grades 1 through 5, and any standardized testing (if applicable).
    • Middle School – An official copy of the previous (two years) and current school transcripts, including prior year’s standardized testing (if applicable) and attendance information.
    • Upper School – An official copy of the 8th grade through 12th grade school transcripts, including prior year’s standardized testing (if applicable) and attendance information.
    • International Students – All international students must submit two copies of your transcripts: one copy in the native language, and one copy translated into English.
    • Submit recommendation forms from your current English teacher, math teacher and Principal or Guidance Counselor.
    • Submit a copy of your passport or birth certificate.
    • International students are asked to submit TOEFL, IELTS, ELTis, SLATE standardized test scores, if available.

    Application forms are available online. You need to have Adobe Reader installed on your device. Each document is a PDF and can be downloaded and completed at any time. Each PDF document is then uploaded (this needs to be done at the same time) through our online application page.
    Please ensure that both biological parents (and/or other legal guardians) are present since both electronic signatures are required to complete the process.

    What documents are required?:

    • Copy of student’s Canadian birth certificate showing parents’ names, OR non-Canadian birth certificate AND passport (if not born in Canada).
    • Copy of student’s immunizations
    • Copy of student’s most recent report card (Grade 1-12) or progress report from pre-school / kindergarten
    • Copy of any relevant reports from specialists (if applicable)
    • Doctor’s note and emergency procedures instructions for life-threatening allergies/illness (if applicable)
    • Copy of Student’s immigration papers (if applicable)
    • Supporting documentation for Legal Residency of Parents Form (e.g., Copy of parent’s Canadian passport, citizenship card, permanent resident card, work or study permit.
    • Supporting documentation for ordinary residency of BC: copy of BC Care Card, BC Driver’s License or BC Services Card.
    • Copy of any relevant court orders pertaining to custody or guardianship of student.
    • Pastoral reference – emailed directly to the school.

    Language Assessment Requirement: Should it be determined that your child requires a language assessment this will be arranged directly with you prior to the family interview. The cost for the assessment is an additional $150 per student.

    Step 3: Pay the Application Fee

    Online application fee payment of $150 per application to a maximum of $300 per family. This is completed online after you have submitted all the documents. Payment can be made using credit card, Visa Debit or Paypal. E-transfers can be sent to: [email protected] (please ensure the students name is in the reference).

    Step 4: Complete the Family Interview

    Mr. Sam Rehman will contact you to arrange a family interview. All students applying need to be present and where possible both parents. We love getting to know you and you getting to know us, this time together is fun!

    Step 5: WRCA’s Response

    We typically will let you know within 2 weeks of the Family Interview if you have been accepted. If you are applying prior to February 1, you will be contacted early February to let you know if space is available. Applications after February 1 are processed as soon as possible.
