    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Accelerated
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

    Academic culture

    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

It really is a castle, and the interiors are as striking as the exterior: turrets, arches, wood and stone. The school is also genuinely old, having been founded in 1874, though the building pre-dates the school. Yet, as ever, appearances can be deceiving, or at least can risk being made too much of. Trafalgar administration has, throughout its long history, consistently revised the curriculum and programs with an intention of providing, in a very literal sense, the best the world has to offer. That includes the adoption of the Singapore math and science curricula; Mandarin instruction; and writing instruction based on the program developed at the University of Chicago. A dedication to real-world learning has been built into the curriculum formally through the Beyond the Classroom initiative, which makes use of local resources and expertise, guided by the students' personal curiosities. Trafalgar offers an up-to-date, creative, and intentional program for girls preparing for university.

THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF MONTREAL

The Sacred Heart School of Montreal was founded in 1861, and built around the principles that were at the core of the Society of the Sacred Heart, which was begun by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800. Among those principles was to educate girls to take part in society beyond the home or the church. Barat sought to encourage girls to take a transformative role in their communities, something that, it perhaps goes without say, was a unique perspective for the time. Sacred Heart continues to follow that ideal, expressing it within modern curricular and extracurricular programing, including the integration of 21st century literacies and online tutoring. An international gaze, too, is used to inform the program, seen specifically in service trips and international exchanges. The school was unique when it was formed, and it remains at the cutting edge of education today.

    Message

Welcome from the Head of School

For a start, there is no other all-girls day and boarding school like us in Canada. We have been at the forefront of girls’ education for almost 150 years. At 240 students from Grade 4 to Grade 12, we are small by design. That means every girl is recognized and honoured for the individual she is. We believe the best entry point to a large and complex world is a warm and personal learning environment with ample opportunities for personal discovery and growth.

You want your daughter to be known and cared for while she pursues her dream to design a zero-emission engine, work in international medicine, write young adult fiction, or whatever other aspiration she holds in her heart. And because she is an individual with unique talents and passions, you know she will flourish within a small, welcoming community that offers an exceptional education and provides for her personal growth.

Sometimes we say, “there’s no such thing as a Trafalgar girl,” because so many different girls of diverse backgrounds and interests thrive here. But we also know exactly what a Trafalgar girl is: engaged in her learning, interested in her world and making a difference in her community. Not all girls arrive that way, but our responsive educational environment ensures that she will feel known by her teachers, supported by her classmates and energized with a sense of belonging. Most of all, she will discover the power of her own voice here.

Trafalgar Castle offers an all-girls education that unites tradition with innovation. We care deeply about how girls learn and offer the experiences they need to build critical thinking, creativity, confidence and leadership. Today’s young women are entering a fast-changing world that demands much of them. The Trafalgar experience prepares them to live with purpose and lead with conviction wherever their future takes them.

Our graduates are ready for the world. They leave the Castle with the confidence and vision they need to live lives of consequence and courage. And they join a network of talented and generous alumnae around the world who embrace them warmly and guide them wisely.

Each year, 100% of our students are accepted to their preferred university destinations. They excel in highly competitive programs and succeed in their chosen fields after graduation. No matter where their university journey takes them, they carry the Trafalgar difference in their hearts.

We would love to meet your daughter.

    Dr. Leanne Foster, Ph.D.

    Head of School

    The future at heart

Welcome, and thank you for expressing an interest in our school! We hope that you, like thousands of young women who have called Sacred Heart their school over the past 156 years, will also feel right at home here. Our student body, faculty, staff and administration work hard to make it a warm and caring environment while keeping our teacher-to-student ratio low. This is just one of the ways that we ensure personal, caring treatment of every Sacred Heart girl.

You don’t have to take my word for it: watch one of our videos, Sacred Heart Girls, to see testimonials from some of our students; visit us at any time by contacting Admissions to make an appointment or speak with our Admissions Coordinator, Stephanie or sign up to be a Student-for-a-Day anytime that is convenient for you, and experience the school first-hand.

When you visit our school be sure to ask about the laptop program introducing Chromebooks for every student and Google Apps for Education; our free online tutoring offered by GradeSlam; and our newly introduced French social sciences option for Secondary I students. You can also follow us on one of the school’s several social media feeds like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, to get a sense of the everyday life of the school and what it is to be a Sacred Heart girl!

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. A Liberal Arts program might still feature group work and projects, for example, contrary to the more singular emphasis on tests and essays at a Traditional program.

THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF MONTREAL

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

What the school says about their curriculum

      TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

Trafalgar Castle School offers a rigorous university preparatory curriculum from Grades 4 through 12. Our focus is to prepare our young women for post-secondary education through courses that emphasize the development of effective communication and inquiry skills, the ability to access and evaluate information, and develop self-assessment skills. We use information technology to deliver appropriate components of the curriculum and in the process encourage mastery of the technology skills essential for current and future success. Our courses meet and exceed Ontario Ministry of Education requirements and are delivered by a highly competent and dedicated faculty. Current research supports learning in a small-school environment, which enables our teachers to engage their students and support them as they achieve their true potential. Trafalgar Castle School is inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education, accredited by the Canadian Educational Standards Institute and a member of the Conference of Independent Schools (Ontario), the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools and an associate member of the National Association of Independent Schools (Associate Member U.S.A.).

THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF MONTREAL

Small class sizes guarantee students individual attention from our dedicated faculty. An accelerated mathematics program leads to Calculus in Secondary V. The school also offers an AP course in European History, Psychology and English. French is offered at four levels to match girls' aptitudes, including Français langue d'enseignement, which is equivalent to what is taught in a French school. Sec I & II have the opportunity to take Social Sciences (History and Geography) in French. The Faculty Scholars program allows motivated students to work on an independent project with an expert in the field. Sacred Heart girls benefit from the balance between academic excellence and rich extracurricular programs. Students compete in team sports such as ice hockey, basketball and soccer, and participate in clubs.

        TRAFALGAR CASTLE SCHOOL

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

Our Grade 5 through 8 Mathematics program is built around the Singapore Math approach, which by design slows down the learning process to help more thoroughly ground our middle school students in the fundamentals of Math. Our Upper School Mathematics program features the academic level as well as enriched-level courses, which prepare students for Advanced Placement level courses.

THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF MONTREAL

The overall objective of the Mathematics programme is to produce problem solvers, using mathematical reasoning and communication. At all levels the assessment of Mathematics is based on two competencies, these being Solves a Situational Problem and Mathematical Reasoning. The content of every course is divided into Algebra and Arithmetic, Geometry, and Probability and Statistics. The accelerated programme moves advanced Mathematics students through the secondary school curriculum in four years instead of five, allowing them to complete AP Calculus in Secondary V.

Science plays an integral role in our daily lives, and is constantly changing and expanding. Our science programme grants students the opportunity to reach their full potential. Students are exposed to a range of topics in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science. Constructivist and cooperative methods of learning are used in order to provide the best learning environment and to accommodate different learning styles. Students learn the value of rigorous intellectual inquiry, through both laboratory and theoretical work. They become aware of both the positive and negative effects of science on society, and of the relationships between science and other disciplines, with a focus on technology. This awareness will help them to become critical and self-assured thinkers and to make informed decisions on matters involving science.

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

The mission of the Social Sciences Department is to foster a thoughtful understanding of the context, infrastructures, ideas, and forces that shape the modern world. Through a multi-disciplinary programme that comprises geography, economics, history, politics and citizenship, students learn about people and places, their power and potential, in the past and present. Our aim is to prepare students for further study and citizenship by combining scholarly insight and practical application. This will enable students to acquire a refined sense of ethical purpose and a heightened appreciation of humanity and its institutions.

These programs feature an equal blend of the audio-lingual and communicative styles of language instruction.

THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF MONTREAL

The communicative method of language acquisition emphasizes the use of the target language in authentic contexts. The approach commonly features interactive group work, games, authentic texts, and opportunities to learn about the cultural background of the language. Drills and quizzes may still be used, but less frequently than with the audio-lingual method.

Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.

The Arts are an integral part of our society and our life experiences and are therefore an essential part of a well-rounded education. They open the door to artistic sensitivity, creativity, and the exploration of a student’s talents and interests. They further develop leadership skills, self-confidence,creative thinking and approaches to problem solving as well as provide the means to explore various mediums of personal and artistic expression. Each discipline combines theoretical understanding with a variety of practical applications in both individual and group settings. Historical, cultural and individual perspectives place the arts within a broader context; and students learn to analyze the role of the arts in the past and present and to recognize their power as both a catalyst for, and a recorder of, social change.

A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

With the introduction of Chromebooks for all students. technology has become fully integrated into our daily curriculum. Indeed, each student starts the day by reading the \'Daily News\' which appears as the homepage when first opening up their Chromebook.\n\nEach class also has a \'Google Classroom\', a virtual classroom, which teachers can use to place learning material, evaluations or otherwise engage with the students in discussion and classwork. A majority of work is now handed out, worked upon and returned to the teacher in a digital format.\n\nUsing the collaborative tools available through the use of the Google for Education program, students can work in groups, share notes and work on the same document even when at home or in different classrooms.\n\nTechnology is used to keep students engaged in various ways.
