    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

There are many things that online instruction can offer that other schools simply can’t, including distance learning and remediation. Stephen Baker began developing the concept of the Virtual High School in 1995 with that in mind, and VHS successfully passed their Ministry inspection, earning the ability to grant the OSSD in 2002. Courses can be started at any point, and students are able to work through the material at their own pace. There are many opportunities for interaction and collaboration with other students and instructors. At the end of the day, it’s a unique approach, and it has proven itself with a range of learners with a range of academic purposes.

There are many things that online instruction can offer that other schools simply can’t, including distance learning and remediation. At Ontario eSecondary School, courses can be started at any point, and students are able to work through the material at their own pace. Live 24/7 online tutoring is understandably a draw, and also makes this an option for students in all time zones, anywhere in the world. Pacing is student-directed, allowing for accelerated completion. It’s an attractive option for students looking to gain the Ontario diploma or to add courses to an existing program of study. What tradeoffs has school_name made to serve families in this way?

What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

"At VHS, we are committed to delivering high-quality course design that equips our students for success in post-secondary education and beyond. We take great pride in thoughtfully developing each course, which may mean not offering every possible subject. Our focus is on creating rigorous courses that challenge students to reach their full potential, ensuring they are well-prepared for the future. We do not prioritize easy grades; instead, we emphasize the development of time management, independent study skills, and a comprehensive, superior education."

    ONTARIO ESECONDARY SCHOOL

"Ontario eSecondary School is dedicated to providing personalized, flexible, and accessible education for students across Ontario. Our commitment to core values—such as academic integrity, student-centered learning, and inclusivity—drives everything we do. However, this focus means we intentionally prioritize quality, individualized instruction and support, sometimes at the expense of offering a wider variety of extracurricular activities or advanced technological features. We believe that fostering deep, meaningful learning experiences is more important than simply expanding options, ensuring that every student receives the attention and resources they need to succeed. This approach reflects our unwavering dedication to student outcomes over quantity."

What key junctures in school_name's history have most shaped its present?

What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

"The idea to create a fully online school began at the front of a biology classroom in 1995. Stephen Baker had his request for new textbooks for his Grade 11 Biology class denied so he turned to the internet to develop his very own digital content for his students.
On September 1, 2001, Virtual High School received its inspected private school status from the Ontario Ministry of Education. By June 24, 2002, VHS had issued its first official Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credit. Like most great ventures, Mr. Baker operated the school out of his basement until eventually renovating a historic hotel in Bayfield, Ontario to house his school in 2011. Fast forward another decade and Virtual High School now has over 8,000 enrolments each year, in-house academic and administrative teams, more than 70 courses, and nearly 150 certified teachers."

    ONTARIO ESECONDARY SCHOOL

"Since our founding in 2017, securing inspection and recognition by the Ontario Ministry of Education has been pivotal in establishing our credibility and ensuring our courses align with provincial standards. This recognition opened doors for our students to pursue post-secondary education confidently. Another significant moment was the expansion of our course offerings to include specialized programs like French Immersion and Equity & Social Justice, reflecting our commitment to offering diverse and inclusive education. Additionally, the implementation of our Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) program marked a key development in acknowledging and valuing students' prior knowledge and experiences. These junctures have collectively shaped OES as a flexible and student-focused institution, committed to providing high-quality online education that meets the diverse needs of our learners."

What type of student is a good fit for school_name?

What type of student is a good fit for your school?

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

"Our school is ideal for self-motivated, independent learners who require flexibility in their education. Students who thrive in a self-paced environment, have diverse academic interests, and seek a supportive, engaging online community will benefit from our tailored approach. Additionally, those needing to resolve scheduling conflicts or accelerate their education will find VHS accommodating."

    ONTARIO ESECONDARY SCHOOL

"Ontario eSecondary School offers a dynamic, flexible learning environment ideal for self-motivated, independent learners who thrive in a digital classroom. Students who excel in our school are proactive, organized, and possess strong time-management skills. They are comfortable navigating technology and are eager to take ownership of their learning journey. Families who will benefit most have high expectations for personalized education and value a balance between academic rigor and flexibility. They understand the importance of clear communication, trust in the online model, and support their child’s autonomy while fostering a strong partnership with educators to ensure success."

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing school_name?

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

"We might advise against choosing VHS for students who require constant in-person interaction and structured classroom settings to thrive academically, as our fully online format may not provide the face-to-face engagement they need. Additionally, students who struggle with self-motivation and time management might find the self-paced model challenging without the external structure of a traditional school. Families seeking extensive in-person extracurricular activities and social interactions might also find our virtual community lacking in this regard. While we offer robust support through certified teachers and online tutoring, the absence of a physical school environment may not be suitable for everyone. It is crucial for families to consider their child's learning preferences and needs before opting for our unique online educational model."

    ONTARIO ESECONDARY SCHOOL

"Ontario eSecondary School may not be a good fit for families seeking a traditional, in-person school experience with constant face-to-face interaction. If a family values a highly structured, rigid schedule or expects a classroom environment with direct supervision, our online model may not align with their needs. Some families may prefer a more hands-on, social learning atmosphere, where students are more physically engaged with peers and teachers. Additionally, if a family prioritizes immediate, in-person support for every question, they may find our model less suited to their preference for constant, direct contact. Our school is best for students who thrive in a flexible, self-directed environment and can manage their learning with greater independence."

Many families appreciate the ability to tailor learning around their child's unique needs and schedule, allowing for a balance between academics and extracurricular activities. Our students can learn at their own pace, making our school an ideal choice for those needing more time to grasp concepts or pursuing interests outside the traditional school day. Where possible, assessments allow students flexibility in the medium or format they use to present ideas."

  • SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

    Message from school leadership

    Message from school leadership

In a world where online learning has now become widespread and common practice, Virtual High School continues to stand apart with its student-centred approach to education. As Ontario’s oldest online high school, we designed the original asynchronous virtual experience to help students who needed more flexibility and support. If I had to select a quote to illuminate my philosophy of education, it would be that nothing worth having is easily obtained. The concept of an online school was not stumbled upon in a brilliant lightbulb moment. Consistent creativity and hard work were required to give it life outside of the traditional education system.

With all the changes over the years, the original vision remains the same: to create a better world where every student has the opportunity to succeed and personalize their education. I consider it a privilege to be part of each student’s education and look forward to continuing to help the next generation of online learners.

As one of the leaders at Ontario eSecondary School I strive to ensure that your online high school experience is filled with support and success. Attending our school means that you can study hard knowing that you’re getting the best from us at all times as we work closely with our certified staff and course developers on a frequent basis. With eLearning in Ontario growing at a rapid pace you can expect that we will grow as well and ensure that our policies and approaches to student success are dynamic as well. From the entire staff, we look forward to your enrollment and helping you achieve your goals. If you have any questions about our school you can contact me directly at [email protected]

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

      VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

VHS can implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs). An IEP is a document that outlines a student’s strengths, weaknesses, learning needs, and any accommodations to be made within a course. We implement any accommodations listed in an existing IEP that apply to our learning environment. Accommodations may include a reduced workload, simplified tasks and materials, or more time for learning and completing activities. Exam and test accommodations may include, but are not limited to, extra time to write an exam or test, the ability to scribe answers or read questions, memory aids for exams, breaks during exams, and no marks deducted for spelling. The assistance of other persons and the use of specialized equipment may also be required to accommodate the needs of the student.

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

Whether a student has a clinically diagnosed learning disability or develops learning difficulties while enrolled at VHS, we can accommodate and respond to their individual needs. With self-paced courses, round-the-clock access to course content, and 18 months to finish, VHS students have the freedom to take as much time as they need to review content, take notes, and practice retention. Our courses present content a number of ways (text, audio, images, video, interactive activities) and include a built-in screen reader. When it comes to assessments, students may choose how they present their ideas (e.g. write a paper, give an oral presentation, create a visual). Additionally, we make accommodations for students who use assistive technologies in their learning.

    VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL

Anyone can take a course with Virtual High School. Our educational model and student body reflect the complexity and diversity of education in the twenty-first century. VHS students choose when and where to study, when to submit assignments, and when to write tests and the final exam. This requires our students to take personal responsibility for managing their education. Taking courses at VHS fosters independence, maturity, and self-motivation in students—all invaluable skills that prepare students for success in post-secondary studies and employment. As supporters of individuality and acceptance, we celebrate and champion diversity in thought, race, belief, gender identification, sexual orientation, culture, and life experience. We don’t just celebrate and support diversity—we thrive on it. With students in over 120 countries, we are strengthened by the wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives in our vibrant learning community.
