Students learn about crew responsibilities, piloting, navigating, crew coordination and much more at sailing schools. These programs are ideal for young sailors as an excellent preparation for competitive sailing, college or even a career in sailing. A sailing program also combines elements of oceanography, maritime history, environmental studies, public policy, and nautical science.
Sailing programs are as varied as the schools are
In these sailing schools you will also be able to participate in meets for team racing and compete in open and closed fleet racing events. School teams reach the Nationals by competing successfully in district championships. The boats used in high school sailing programs are typically 2 person (double handed) dinghies or singlehanded boats but there are schools where the school is right on a sailing vessel and it is daily life to participate in the sailing of the ship. Team racing focuses mainly on strategy and has become very popular in recent years. Regattas occur throughout the sailing season and these events are highly popular among the youth.
Many of these schools also offer top academics, of course. Sailing is a disciplined sport and you'll develop strict personal discipline at schools with strong sailing programs.
