Good high school tennis programs are somewhat rare but many private schools offer exceptional extracurricular training in tennis. Students at these schools enjoy the benefits of combining tennis with academics at a relatively low cost and enjoying tennis as a sport and pastime. All coaches are skilled at handling students and the training programs have various levels for the different grades.
High schools with tennis programs include strength and conditioning exercises to develop aerobic and anaerobic capacity, strength, flexibility and speed. Strength training, cardio training, agility training, and stretching routines are part of the curriculum. Morning practice and weekend tournaments are also likely to be part of the program.
High school tennis in Canada has grown immensely over the past years. The opportunities for Canadian students to participate in tennis are growing with an increasing number of schools providing tennis programs. This sport allows for easy set-up and instruction in all school environments and facilities. Aside from participating in competitive tennis, this sport fulfills a number of the requirements for physical education. Students develop various physical and mental skills while playing this sport. Tennis schools offer a chance for students to play in both an individual (singles) and a team sport (doubles). Playing tennis increases student knowledge and appreciation for the sport.
Private schools in Canada and around the world have produced some of the best tennis players in the world including Tim Henman, former British number one tennis player, Jamie Murray, winner of the Wimbledon Doubles in 2007 and graduate of the Leys School and Nicole Arendt graduate of the Hun School of Princeton, who won 16 doubles titles in her career.
