MESSAGE FROM THE LEADERSHIP

We invited Janice Gruchy, Director at Academy for Gifted Children - P.A.C.E., to share a message.

The overview highlights the vision, values, and guiding principles that shape leadership and the student experience at Academy for Gifted Children - P.A.C.E..

Academy for Gifted Children - P.A.C.E., Janice Gruchy, Director

Janice Gruchy, Director
B.A. (Hons.), B.Ed., M.Ed., Specialist in Gifted Education

My journey at P.A.C.E. began in 1999 and in 2019 I was delighted to assume the role of Director/Principal. The most rewarding part of my job is interacting with the students. They are fun loving, witty and demonstrate an intellectual curiosity that is any educator's dream. The energy level in the building is very high, the questioning by the students is incessant, and there are a lot of laughs. The skills for succeeding at P.A.C.E., whether in the role of teacher or student, are the same: a love of learning, high motivation, an excellent work ethic and a sense of humour. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by excellent teachers and a strong administrative staff: Liana, the Assistant to the Director; our Vice Principals, Caroline Corbit and Joanne Abela; and our Administrative Assistant, Irina. Every September we look forward to yet another passionate and exciting year for all.

Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

The leadership is proactive and committed to open communication.

Testimonies from the school community emphasize that the administration prioritizes proactive engagement and clear communication, fostering a supportive environment for students and parents while effectively addressing concerns.

If we have questions, they're always open and available for an email or a phone call to be set up.
School leadership and administration teams have always responded promptly to any matters, whether they directly involve our children or the school as a whole. A positive environment is fostered through thoughtful conversation and gentle guidance from the teachers. Communication has always been clear and timely and we've never felt like we were left wondering about how any particular issue was going to be resolved. Any communication in regard to discipline issues has seemed fair and open to further discussion. The team at PACE has always made it clear that the well-being, both mentally and physically, of the students was their top priority.
Communication between the school (teachers and administrators) and the families has been exceptional. P.A.C.E. is committed to its students, their families, and the school's community by fostering a positive school environment, teaching its students values, and ensuring positive educational and emotional growth. If there are any issues related to discipline, they are communicated to the parents immediately and are handled in an appropriate, fair manner. P.A.C.E. administrators take successful student educational experiences at the school very seriously and encourage an environment of kindness and responsibility.

There is a strong commitment to personalized student success.

Insights from parents and students reveal a deep dedication from the staff and administration at the school to understand each student's unique journey, strengths, and challenges, fostering personal growth and achievement.

Our eldest is just about to graduate, and it's been such an amazing journey for him. We couldn't have possibly picked a better school for him, just couldn't. Everybody knows him at the school, the teachers and the administration. Everybody knows his journey. Everybody knows his strengths, his weaknesses, his challenges, and what he can do.
What I appreciate the most about PACE is the support from everyone, especially the principal, the administration, and all the teachers. When I was in Grade 7, I was in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and missed around three months of school. The teachers were always ready to provide extra help, which made balancing the show and my school work so much easier, and sometimes they even re-explained lessons to me because I missed them. On a regular basis, I feel like the PACE staff are very supportive and want you to be able to do your best and succeed. I overall just really appreciate the supportive environment that PACE provided.
My favorite thing about the school is the sense that it is a genuine investment and commitment on both sides. The way that the school is genuinely invested in the outcomes of the kids, puts in the work over many years, creates that bond. The teachers there and the administration there are genuinely invested in the success of the kids there. And they're a school for gifted children, and they take that seriously. I really am impressed with the staff and the administration there for being able to manage that on a daily basis.

Values and character development are prioritized.

Comments from insiders underscore the school’s focus on instilling strong values, ensuring a safe and respectful atmosphere, and offering programs that promote creativity and personal development.

The teachers are outstanding. Many of them have been at the school for years, and it shows. They’re deeply committed and genuinely care about the students. The administration is also incredibly supportive and hands-on. They foster a strong values-based culture where kindness, responsibility, and respect are non-negotiable. There’s zero tolerance for bullying, which creates a safe and nurturing space for learning. On top of that, the school offers an amazing theatre program that encourages creativity and confidence and gives kids the opportunity to shine.
P.A.C.E. has set a high bar and helps students reach their full potential in a supportive way. The exceptional teachers and administration truly care and have the experience and dedication to back it up. The strong values and community, from anti-bullying to character development, create a safe, respectful, and inspiring environment for children.
