Go to child profileAt Blyth Academy Orbit, we conduct live, teacher-led classes through our virtual classrooms. Students attend classes with their classmates at regularly scheduled times during traditional school hours. Class discussions, break out groups, and testing are all conducted in our virtual space, while relationships with teachers and classmates are nurtured through office hours, group projects, and virtual student clubs. Blyth Academy Orbit offers all of the benefits of our physical campuses from the comfort of your home.
When it was launched in 2020, Blyth Academy Orbit at stroke created an new kind of online offering. With a longstanding experience with in-class and online asynchronous instruction, there was a sense they could do even more for a greater number of students. Blyth Academy Orbit offers an entire high school experience within a virtual campus—students attend classes in real time, and follow a traditional high school schedule. They are placed in classes just as they would be in a traditional high school setting: they see the same students every day, the same teachers, and have opportunities to interact and take part in co-curricular programs. “It gives them a cohort, it gives them a community,” says Chief Academic Officer Kathy Young. “It gives them regular predictable contact with classmates and the teacher, engaging with each other around ideas, that sharing of ideas, that sharing of experiences. It’s important.” It is. It also reflects the long experience that Blyth Academy has had, and makes use of extensive resources and expertise. In all, it’s hard to imagine a school more suited to our time, or making more out of the technologies available for program delivery. Across all its offerings, Blyth Academy is now effectively the largest single private school network in Canada, the student experience remains intimate; in the both the physical and virtual synchronous classrooms there are never more than 15 students. True to Sam Blyth’s original vision, there remains a focus on global learning, citizenship, and ethical leadership. There might have been a time when Blyth was an anomaly within the world of education—smaller schools, virtual offerings, an agile approach to learning—though it certainly isn’t now. It’s hard to imagine a school better suited to our time and the needs of the current generation of learners.
