(5) Student Experience
There are two specific things I know my children appreciate: 1) Outdoor Time - the Evergreen community is supportive of taking learning outside as well as embracing the elements. The property is situated on a dreamy green space with forests, Bronte Creek, play structures, fields and a swimming pool. It’s rare for our kids to come home without a day's worth of adventure all over their clothes. Kids learn better when immersed in nature, and allowing the kids to explore, create and imagine on the school property is so special. We see it in their emotional regulation and their curiosity. 2) Small class sizes that integrate with other classes - My kids love that they have their crew that they learn with from day to day, but I know they appreciate that they also get to go on hikes, build projects in steam class or play soccer ball with the other classes throughout their week. Friendships have carried on even if classrooms have changed.
Why Evergreen Christian Academy?
We chose Evergreen at a time when it felt so difficult to have community and connection. It was so important to me that during a time when the world was so divided, my son didn’t feel any of it. During our test day, I saw firsthand how the teachers were all heart-led and had a true understanding of a child’s emotional capability. Kids were excited to share stories with the chef and trusted the voices of staff when told not to do something. There was a level of shared respect which remains true to today.
Expectations vs. Reality
The school aligned with my expectations of providing the foundations of learning while allowing kids to be kids. The basics of math, literacy, science, STEAM, music and art - what school is for. And when a child is progressing beyond their peers, they recognize it and provide that extra challenge. The school has yet to diverge from my expectations. We are so grateful.
Your Advice
Your child will be given the space and opportunity to find their voice. The majority of families at Evergreen have a shared vision of community that can learn, play and celebrate together. One piece of advice - buy lots of extra socks and pants - creek walks, recess and after-school play are a hit!
