We didn't bolt online courses onto a classroom. As Canada's first independent hybrid school — a division of Heritage Christian Online School, which has walked alongside families since 2004 — we've had two decades innovating in education. We know our tools: what they do well, and what they don't.
The difference in hybrid education is what it frees staff to do. Our digital curriculum supports content delivery, so staff can pour their creativity into the relationships and learning experiences that matter most for each student. Every student has a unique plan, intentionally built around their real gifts and goals. Families aren't customers to manage; they're partners in the work and in the community. Schedules flex around a student instead of forcing a choice. The result: students who don't just pass, but experience investment in their learning. They graduate able to think, advocate for themselves, know who they are and how they learn and are ready pursue what they're made for.
Every choice we've made serves relationships and personalization which means we've let go of things other schools hold onto. We've traded the predictable rhythm of a bell-to-bell, same-seat, same-program, rigid schedule for flexibility. That flexibility is freeing, but it asks students and families to manage their time and own their learning far earlier than a fixed timetable would — a real stretch for some, and the exact skill that serves them for life. We've chosen to be openly Christ-centered rather than neutral; that isn't for everyone, but it means a child's character and beliefs are supported alongside their academics. We've traded scale for being known: we're not the biggest school with the longest menu of courses and teams; we're the one where our staff all know your child by name. And we've made a trade – full control for genuine partnership. We’re here to support. But that asks more of families. This is the trade that supports why the plan actually fits your kid.
Flex Academy didn't start in 2023. It started in 1986 — the year Heritage Christian School opened in Kelowna with 50 students, founded by Kelowna Christian Centre Society. This laid the foundation: faith, care, and families as partners. In 2004 we launched Heritage Christian Online School and spent two decades becoming one of Western Canada's largest online schools.
When families changed — remote work, students opportunities expanding, too many not thriving in a standard classroom — we innovated. In 2023, we closed the traditional campus and opened Flex Academy. We didn't just put online courses into classrooms; we let go of a school that had worked in the past to build one that would support families now and into the future.. That's who we are — a school that’s constantly innovating to build education systems that work.
At the Jr.K-Grade 5 level, the fit is about connection: kids who want to be known and guided, and who, in time, become builders of community for the students around them. This isn't a transactional school where you drop off a child and collect a result. It's a place where students, teachers, and families are growing something together.
For Grade 6-12 students, Flex is for students willing to work hard for something real. The independence, opportunity, community and flexibility we offer aren't free — they come with responsibility, initiative, relational expectations and engagement. Students who lean in get an education built around their gifts and goals and life-time relationships to carry with them. Students waiting to be carried will feel the gap.

We're not the right school for everyone.
If you want a traditional, full-day, five-days-a-week model where the school owns the schedule and you can hand your child off and collect a result, our flexibility will feel like work — it asks families to stay involved and students to engage with intention. If you're after a big-school experience — large teams, a long course menu, a packed social calendar — you'll feel our size; being known comes at the cost of scale. If your child only thrives when told exactly what to do every hour, the independence we offer can become drift before it becomes growth. And if you want an education that keeps faith at arm's length, we're not it — Christ-centered isn't a program here; it runs through everything we do.
When families choose Flex over the schools they were also considering, they tend to have similar reasons: They wanted small classes and a close-knit community where their child is known and experiences belonging and acceptance. They wanted a like-minded community of other families who share faith-filled values and beliefs and who think outside the box and want something different for their students than what they experienced when they were in school. Many came because their child didn't fit a standard mold — gifted and under-challenged, or needing real accommodations and care, or with unique schedules because of travel, sports, or other opportunities. They wanted learning that shows up in outcomes, not just behavior that's managed: kids who are genuinely growing, not just getting through.
Underneath all of it is the thing that's hardest to market and easiest to feel: this is a joy-filled place. Families choose us because their child is happy here, and learning because of it.
Ask almost anyone in Kelowna about Flex and the first thing they think of is our students – kind, polite, engaged, creative.. Ask a Flex student "Do you like your school?" and you get a resounding yes — real excitement, real connection. That's our clearest public image: this is a school students actually love. More broadly, we're known for our flexibility, for being "the hybrid school" and increasingly our reputation is building as a school that supports students really well. That reputation isn't only from families. Local counsellors, occupational therapists, and psychologists refer students to us specifically because our personalized learning model meets kids where they are.
The thing families see but consistently underrate is how much the care comes first and why it matters. It's easy to read the warmth as a nice extra. It isn't. When a student feels loved, seen, and supported, they feel safe – and a safe kid is one who can actually learn: try new things, take risks, deepen relationships instead of protecting themselves. That's not a soft perk; it's the precondition for everything academic and builds a sense of confidence that lasts a lifetime. There's a difference between completing educational outcomes and being genuinely impacted by what you learn. Plenty of schools get students through to graduation. We do that — and we do the deeper work too: the investment into learning that changes how a kid sees themselves and the world.
In practice – Flex Academy is designed really differently than the school you grew up in, and that can be genuinely uncomfortable at first — it can be a real learning curve for students and parents both.
The other surprise is that we're a start-up. We opened our doors in 2023 and we’re a totally new model of education in Canada. We're not a stable, decades-old system running a proven playbook. We're a pilot, a test kitchen, doing something new and iterating as we go. Some families find that frustrating. Being a part of something innovative comes with unique stressors, and with payoffs you can't get anywhere else. Because here's what families discover: their kids don't just learn from our school, they learn through it. The model itself teaches them that innovation is possible, that it's messy, that it takes vulnerability and grit and that it's worth it. That's a lesson most students never get to live in a school. Here they do.
Our model is working for students, families, and our staff — strong growth, and 96% of students staying year over year, strong progress in educational outcomes being reached — and other schools have noticed. They began reaching out, asking how we did it and whether we could help them do the same. So this year HCOS launched the Nexus for Innovation in Education: a hub that helps other schools design, launch, and scale personalized learning models, using Flex Academy Kelowna as the live "test kitchen" of our hybrid division. And to make room for what's next, we've begun the Learning Without Limits capital campaign — expanding our own buildings and infrastructure so we can serve more students here and extend hybrid learning far beyond our walls. The commitment underneath hasn't changed: build something that genuinely helps kids thrive, then live out our value of generosity and share it with others.
When we look ahead and envision where Flex will be in five years, we see a Flex Academy that is bigger. But the point isn't size, it's what size lets us offer. We'll complete our new building and grow toward 500 students with more spaces so families can start with us earlier and stay longer. We will expand our electives to include more hands-on shop and creative programs alongside a more robust athletics department and greater travel and community opportunities. More paths, in other words, for a student to find the thing that's theirs. The challenge we're holding onto: getting bigger without losing what makes us …us. Every one of these plans has to pass the same test — does it help a kid feel known, support their relationship with God and others, and help them thrive – not just short term, but life-long. If it doesn't, we won't do it. The next five years are about widening the doorway without changing the bones of who we are: the same care, the same mission, but more room to grow.
