  • Through RULER, PRA students build emotional intelligence, empathy, and resilience for life.
  • Our Resilient Learner Pillars shape curious, confident, and compassionate people.
  • Brain-friendly classrooms make learning active, purposeful, and deeply engaging.
  • Every student is known, valued, and empowered to learn with purpose and integrity.
  • PRA is where confident, curious, and resilient learners begin to shape their future.

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

At Pretty River Academy we develop resilient learners who are curious, self aware, self directed, collaborative and community minded. Our Resilient Learner Pillars: Growth Mindset, Curiosity, Self-Awareness, Self-Direction, and Collaboration are embedded in everything we do, shaping how our students think, learn, and grow. Through inquiry-driven, brain-friendly learning engagements, students ask questions, make connections, and engage deeply with their learning. Our use of the RULER framework from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence ensures students build empathy, emotional awareness, and the skills to navigate complexity with confidence. PRA students benefit from being truly known, capable learners ready to be both supported and stretched. Our students take advantage of meaningful experiences in the arts, athletics, and the outdoors. At PRA, we choose depth, relationships, and real learning over scale so every student is seen, valued, and empowered to thrive.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

At Pretty River Academy, our commitment to developing resilient learners requires thoughtful tradeoffs. We prioritize depth over breadth, choosing inquiry-driven learning and personalization so every child is truly known. We value a healthy tension between collaboration and competition, fostering confidence and community while providing opportunities to compete. Our emphasis on social-emotional development, supported by the RULER framework from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, means we balance academic challenge with wellbeing , resisting a purely performance-driven model. We invest in meaningful experiences and offer experiences in the arts, athletics, science fairs, robotics and a full co-curricular program all set within a real-world context. These intentional choices reflect our belief that education is not about doing more, but about doing what matters most. The result is students who are curious, confident, capable and on their own path to self discovery.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Pretty River Academy’s identity has been shaped by a series of intentional, purpose-driven decisions. From its founding, the school placed equal emphasis on academic excellence and social-emotional development, creating the relational, student centered environment that defines PRA today.
A key milestone was the adoption of the RULER framework, which positioned emotional intelligence and well-being at the heart of learning. The development of our Resilient Learner Pillars further clarified our mission, embedding growth mindset, curiosity, self-awareness, self-direction and collaboration into daily practice.
More recently, program growth in experiential learning, the arts, athletics, science and robotics has strengthened our commitment to learn by doing. Leadership evolution has brought fresh perspective while maintaining continuity of vision.
Each of these milestones reflects a deliberate choice to remain small, relational, and purpose-driven to inform each student's learning journey.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Students who thrive at Pretty River Academy are curious, open-minded collaborators ready to engage in the learning process. Whether confident or building confidence, they are willing to ask questions, take risks, make connections and grow through both success and challenge.

PRA is especially well-suited for students who are curious and possess a growth mindset, who value being self-aware and self-directed and who benefit from being known as individuals.

Families who gain the most from PRA believe that education extends beyond academics. They value social-emotional learning alongside achievement and understand that growth occurs when there is a healthy tension between support and challenge. Our families trust the process of program delivery, value open communication, and partner with the school to support their child’s full development.

Together, these students and families embrace learning as a journey - one grounded in curiosity, effort, reflection, and a commitment to grow.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Pretty River Academy is designed, with intention, not to be all things to all families. Families seeking a highly traditional, standardized, or performance-driven environment, where success is defined primarily by grades, may not find the right fit. We prioritize depth over pace, growth over comparison, and learning over performance.
Families who prefer rigid structures or strict, compliance-based discipline models may also find our relational, student-centered approach different from their expectations. At PRA, we emphasize self-regulation, reflection, and accountability.
Our model also relies on a strong partnership with families; so, those seeking a more hands-off experience, or who place less value on social-emotional development, may not fully connect with our program. PRA is best suited for families who value the importance of curiosity, collaboration, resilience and the development of the whole child, and who see education as a meaningful journey of growth.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families choose Pretty River Academy because their children are truly known, supported, and challenged. Small class sizes and a highly relational environment allow us to meet each student where they are and help them grow with intention. Parents are drawn to our balanced approach whereby strong academics are paired with explicit social-emotional learning through the RULER framework and our Resilient Learner Pillars.
Many families are seeking something different: a school where confidence is built alongside competence, where students develop independence, resilience, and a sense of self. They value our extended day, meaningful learning experiences, and a culture that prioritizes well-being, positive relationships, and a sense of belonging.
Ultimately, families choose PRA because it feels right, for their child and for their family, offering both support and stretch in a safe, purpose-driven environment.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

Pretty River Academy’s reputation continues to grow as a vibrant, welcoming, and purpose-driven school community. Increasingly, PRA is seen as a hub of connection, both for students and the broader community. Through community partnerships and shared use of our facility, we welcome over 300 community members each week through soccer and basketball leagues, as well as the Collingwood Market, bringing energy and visibility to our campus beyond the school day.
Set on a stunning 40-acre campus of protected wetland, with an outdoor classroom, expansive field, and outdoor sport court, our environment extends learning beyond four walls and into nature.
In the public eye, PRA is known as a place where students are truly known, where relationships matter, and where learning comes to life. This growing presence reflects who we are: a school grounded in connection, enriched by community, and dedicated to helping students thrive.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

One of the most underappreciated aspects of Pretty River Academy is the intentional development of social-emotional skills as a foundation for learning. While families see the warmth of our community and the strong relationships between students and teachers, they may not fully recognize how deliberately we build in opportunities to help students foster curiosity, develop a growth mindset, encourage self-awareness, promote self direction and collaboration.
Through our use of the RULER framework and our Resilient Learner Pillars, students learn to understand and manage emotions, navigate challenges, and take ownership of their learning. These skills are not separate from academics; they are what enable students to engage deeply, persevere, and succeed.
Over time, families come to see that this focus is transformative. It shapes not only how students learn, but who they become - confident, capable, and compassionate individuals prepared to shape their future.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

What often surprises families about Pretty River Academy is the depth of learning that comes from our balanced approach. While families are initially drawn to our warm, relational environment and strong sense of community, they are often struck by how rigorous and intentional the learning truly is.
Over time, families come to see that our focus on social-emotional learning does not replace academic excellence, it strengthens it. Students are not only engaged and happy; they are thinking deeply, asking meaningful questions, making connections and developing independence and resilience.
Families are also surprised by how quickly students grow in confidence and self-awareness, and how capable they become in navigating challenges, resolving conflicts and complex problems. What may first appear as a gentle, supportive environment reveals itself to be a purposeful, high-expectation setting environment where students are consistently encouraged to stretch themselves, take risks and grow.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

At Pretty River Academy, our commitment to developing resilient learners is reflected in intentional program enhancements, including our Morning Meeting and our end-of-day Resilient Learner Lab. We continue to adapt best practices in teaching and learning, with a strong focus on process over product, valuing the journey as much as the destination.
The RULER framework and our Resilient Learner Pillars are deeply embedded in daily practice, ensuring social-emotional skills are explicitly taught and reinforced. Our schedule includes dedicated time for reflection, goal setting, and skill development, fostering independence and accountability.
We have expanded experiential learning across the arts, athletics, and co-curricular programs, fully leveraging our 40-acre campus. Ongoing faculty professional development supports inquiry-driven, brain-based instruction. Together, these changes reflect our mission to foster curiosity, encourage a growth mindset, and develop resilient learners.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

Over the next few years, Pretty River Academy will continue to grow with intention, guided by our commitment to developing resilient learners. This summer, our playground renewal project will enhance outdoor play and learning spaces, further supporting connection and exploration within our natural environment.
In the Fall 2026, we will embark on a strategic planning process to define future priorities and directions, with a focus on strengthening program delivery, deepening student support, and advancing access through the development of a financial aid program.
We will continue to refine our academic and co-curricular offerings, expand experiential learning opportunities, and invest in professional development to ensure that we continue to adapt best practices in teaching and learning. These thoughtful, incremental steps will strengthen our relational, student-centered model, enhance the student experience and stay true to who we are as a purposeful, future focused school community.
