(5) Student Experience

Hydrostone Academy has been an absolute godsend for my son. Although my son has done fine at other schools, there is something about Hydrostone Academy that is like no other school in Halifax. This is the first time that my son has come home at the end of the day without complaining. Sure, there are aspects of every school day that children don't like (i.e., homework), but he comes home happy, eager to tell us about his day and everything he has learned. Art class, intramurals, physical education, and math class are his highlights. The only thing that my son finds disappointing is the small grounds to play on at recess and lunchtime. My son loves to play soccer and basketball; if the school had the space to have these outside, then the school would be an 11/10 in his eyes.

Why Hydrostone Academy?

After visiting Hydrostone Academy for a tour, I knew almost immediately that this was the school for him. From the warm and inviting atmosphere to the emphasis on nurturing the whole child, not just academically, but also mentally, emotionally, and socially, I felt confident that my son would flourish there. Many schools pride themselves on what they can offer students from an academic perspective. I was looking for a school that could continue to support his academic success while also helping him grow socially, and Hydrostone stood out in that regard.

Expectations vs. Reality

The school aligns closely with many of my values: empathy, compassion, justice, and equality, to name a few. So far, my expectations have been fully met, and I have not experienced any disappointments.

Your Advice

If you are like me and have driven by Hydrostone Academy numerous times and have always been curious as to what this school is all about, do yourself a favour and book a tour. Your eyes will be opened to what your child has the capacity to learn and become when compassion, empathy, and values are at the forefront of their teachers’ minds and are taught each and every day.

(5) School Leadership

Hydrostone Academy has an exceptional leadership team. The administration is approachable, responsive, and genuinely invested in the well-being and success of the students. When issues arise, they are handled promptly and thoughtfully, with a clear focus on problem-solving rather than blame. The school fosters a very positive, inclusive environment where children feel supported and known as individuals. Discipline is handled fairly and with care, always in a way that feels respectful and developmentally appropriate. Communication with parents is a real strength of the school. The administration keeps families well-informed and is always open to questions or concerns. Overall, there is a strong sense of trust, collaboration, and community, which speaks volumes about the quality of leadership at Hydrostone Academy.

(4.5) Teaching

The teaching at Hydrostone Academy is outstanding, and I am extremely happy with the quality of instruction. The teachers are clearly passionate about what they do and very knowledgeable in their subject areas. They are deeply committed to their students and take the time to really understand each child’s strengths and needs. Communication is excellent. Teachers provide regular, thoughtful updates and constructive feedback that is both helpful and encouraging. I feel well-informed about my child’s progress and confident in the learning happening at school. Most importantly, my child is both challenged and supported. The teachers strike a wonderful balance between maintaining high academic expectations while also offering the emotional and academic support children need to thrive. It’s clear that the educators at Hydrostone Academy truly care about student growth, confidence, and well-being.

(4.5) Academics

The academic program at Hydrostone Academy is well-structured, engaging, and thoughtfully designed to support both strong academic development and personal growth. The curriculum is rigorous while still being age-appropriate, and it encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine love of learning. One of the school’s greatest strengths is its balanced approach: academics are clearly a priority, but they are delivered in a way that feels supportive rather than pressured. Students are encouraged to explore their interests, ask questions, and take ownership of their learning. The small class sizes allow for individualized attention, which is a major advantage. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves in a supportive environment that values effort, curiosity, and confidence. Overall, the atmosphere fosters intellectual curiosity and resilience, helping students develop strong foundational skills while also building independence and self-motivation. I feel confident that the academic program at Hydrostone Academy will adequately prepare my child for their next steps in life, both academically and personally.

(3) Extracurriculars

I feel like, because the student body is on the smaller side, there are not always enough people to participate "fairly" against other schools with larger teams. I think the extracurricular activities they do are adequate for the younger children, but as they move up in grades, I believe parents need to enrol their children in activities outside of school to develop a well-rounded person. The biggest area that the school lacks is organized sports teams, but again, I believe this is due to the smaller student body size and not having enough people to make up a sports team.

(4.5) Students

The student body overall is small. The average class is 10–15 students, which has its pros and cons. Some of the pros of a small class are more individualized learning when needed and a close-knit class. Some of the cons are fewer people to form diverse friendships with and less availability to qualify for competitions or events where a larger class or school size is required. From my experience, the students get along great, there appears to be mutual respect for the most part, and mentorship exists between the older students and the younger students. The thing that stands out to me the most is that it appears that everyone looks out for everyone else and keeps each other’s best interests at the forefront; from high school to primary, you will always find someone at Hydrostone Academy to talk to!

(4.5) School Life

The student life in the elementary school seems to be of high quality; my child loves going to school. His brain is challenged every day through reading, art, connecting with nature, learning about history, and learning how to navigate the world with courage, integrity, and confidence. Students are seen as equals and respected as fellow human beings; there is no power trip of the teacher over students. Teachers foster a relationship of respect, inclusivity and help children navigate the world. Larger classes could perhaps challenge students a bit more to have to learn to deal with various different personalities, but I also think that the smaller classes allow for a tighter-knit community and individualized learning both in the classroom and on the school grounds, socially and academically.

(5) Community

The community at Hydrostone Academy is like none other. People are inclusive, respectful, and easy-going. Community is the essence of the school. Families are required to complete 30 hours of volunteer work per academic year, which really gets families involved and interacting with one another. There are so many various options to participate in the school community, from outdoor maintenance to bake sales to chaperoning on school trips. This opportunity appears to build a tight-knit group of parents and families that are supportive of one another. It is a great example to the children and younger generations of the school that many hands make light work and that community is important for mental, emotional, and social growth and development. Community at Hydrostone Academy is felt from the moment you walk through the front doors.

(3.5) School Location

The school is located in a neighbourhood that is new, upcoming, and vibrant. There is a small market area and mom-and-pop shops. The area is rich in history and boasts many historical buildings. The neighbourhood has many young families and is also home to a new public school. Older students can venture off the school grounds, but younger children stay on the school grounds.

(5) Admissions

My advice to families considering applying is to take the time to really get to know the school and be open about what you’re looking for in an educational environment. Hydrostone Academy values fit just as much as academic readiness, so sharing your child’s interests, personality, and learning style is important. Our experience with the admissions process was very positive and surprisingly low-stress. The admissions team was welcoming, approachable, and genuinely interested in getting to know our family. It felt much more like a conversation than an evaluation, and we always felt supported rather than judged. The process felt transparent and well-communicated from start to finish. Everything felt thoughtful, fair, and aligned with the school’s culture of care and community.
