The big picture on Hydrostone Academy

We summarized the school ourselves

Located in the historic Hydrostone district, Hydrostone Academy stands out for the way it combines academics with the arts, outdoor education, mindfulness, and community-based learning. The school offers a holistic model that will appeal to families looking for a more personal, reflective, and relationship-driven experience than a conventional school. The school’s evolving identity has been shaped through ongoing dialogue with the community, while preserving its long-standing core values. Those values include compassion, creativity, self-awareness, and student well-being. The school’s small size is one of its greatest strengths. Parents describe an environment where students receive meaningful individual attention and where teachers know children well. Parent testimonials also highlight the school’s strong, well-structured academic program, skilled teachers, thoughtful curriculum design, and how students are challenged and supported. Families also speak positively about the social atmosphere, describing Hydrostone as inclusive, respectful, and close-knit. For children who benefit from strong relationships, a sense of belonging, and an education that attends to both academic and emotional growth, Hydrostone Academy is a compelling option.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"We are founded on the belief that children and all people are inherently good. We maintain a very safe and accepting environment. Students take part in an integrated curriculum that ties together the five pillars of the school: mindfulness, outdoor education, community, arts education and culturally sustaining academics. This builds resilience, empathy and curiosity and prepares students not just for university, but for the rest of their lives."

  • Mindfulness cultivates a deep awareness of the present moment, developing resilience and focus
  • Outdoor education explores the natural world, fostering a sense of wonder, curiosity and stewardship
  • Community emphasizes strong relationships, collaborative learning, and a supportive environment
  • Arts education fosters creative thinking, problem-solving, self-expression, and mind-body alignment
  • Culturally sustaining academics honour diverse cultural backgrounds, histories, and perspectives
  • Honoring diversity across race, gender, identity, age, language, ability, worldview and experience

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

Creative and engaged academics in an accepting, small school atmosphere informed by mindfulness and the arts.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

One key trade-off we make is between standardization and personalized learning. We place less emphasis on rigid pacing guides, frequent high-stakes testing, and uniform outcomes, and more emphasis on knowing students deeply as learners and as people. This means learning may look different from classroom to classroom and student to student. The impact is that students feel seen and supported, develop confidence in their own learning process, and are more willing to take intellectual risks. The trade-off is that our approach requires more time, professional judgment, and flexibility from teachers, and it does not always fit neatly into standardized measures.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

December 6, 1917
A Strong Building
Originally built for the Alexander McKay School in 1916. As a solid brick building on the slopes of Richmond facing Halifax Harbour, it was one of few buildings in the neighbourhood to survive the Halifax Explosion in 1917. It served as a base for those who rebuilt what we now know as the Hydrostone neighbourhood.

September 1, 1993
A Foundation of Goodness
The Shambhala School was founded by a group of parents who were members of a Buddhist community in Halifax, with the intention of providing their children with a unique educational experience.

September 1, 1995
Building Strength
The Shambhala School moves into the former Alexander McKay School building on Russell Street with the generous assistance of the City of Halifax.

January 1, 2025
Building Strong Community
The Shambhala School evolves into the Hydrostone Academy, a secular school building strong and resilient youth who are prepared for university and the challenges of life ahead of them.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Students who thrive at Hydrostone Academy are curious, engaged, and eager to take ownership of their learning. They enjoy exploring ideas, asking questions, and making connections across subjects. Our students are self-motivated, adaptable, and open to creative approaches, whether in projects, outdoor learning, or hands-on experiences. They value community, collaboration, and empathy, and are willing to reflect on their learning and growth. In short, Hydrostone Academy is a school for learners who are thoughtful, resilient, and curious, and who flourish in a supportive, student-centered environment where intellectual exploration, creativity, and personal growth go hand in hand.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Hydrostone Academy may not be the best fit for every student. Students who require intensive one-on-one support beyond what our small, collaborative classrooms can provide might not thrive here. Additionally, our school community values inclusivity, respect, and empathy. Students who struggle to engage respectfully with peers, or who hold discriminatory or intolerant views—toward race, gender, sexuality, or other differences—may not feel aligned with our environment and may find it challenging to participate fully in our culture of care and community.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families choose Hydrostone Academy because we offer a learning environment that balances academic rigour, creativity, and personal growth. Unlike larger or more standardized schools, we provide personalized learning, strong student-teacher relationships, and a supportive community where every child is seen and valued. Our emphasis on social-emotional development, inclusivity, and hands-on, experiential learning helps students thrive both academically and personally.
Families select us as their preferred choice because they want more than grades—they want a school where curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking are nurtured, where students can explore their interests safely, and where their children feel known and supported every day.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

In the public eye, Hydrostone Academy is often seen as a warm, homey, “hippy” or “granola” school—approachable and nurturing, but sometimes underestimated in terms of academic rigour. Families who enroll quickly discover that this is only the tip of the iceberg. They are often impressed by the level of academic challenge, the breadth and depth of topics, and the hands-on, experiential learning that complements strong intellectual growth. Our reputation reflects both a caring, inclusive community and a robust, challenging academic program.

Our reputation among academia is quite different. Universities often have a high regard for Hydrostone Academy grads. Professors often comment that Hydrostone Academy grads are creative individuals with strong critical thinking skills who are good at collaborating with their classmates.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

One of the most underrated aspects of Hydrostone Academy is the combination of academic rigour and close-knit community. Families often notice the warm, homey environment first, but may not realize the depth of the curriculum and hands-on learning experiences. Students and families alike come to appreciate the inclusive, supportive culture, with many students describing it as “like going to school with your cousins.” These elements together foster both strong intellectual growth and a sense of belonging.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

Families are often pleasantly surprised by Hydrostone Academy’s music program. Students begin learning instruments as early as Grade 1 with the recorder, and by Grade 6, each class forms its own band. Throughout the term, they practice and develop their songs, culminating in performances at our winter and spring music showcases. Many families do not expect such a robust, hands-on, and collaborative music experience alongside our strong academics.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

Recently, Hydrostone Academy has made several enhancements to better support students and families. We now have a full-time Master Social Work counsellor on staff, providing support for student and parent/guardian wellbeing. Our playground has been transformed into a nature-based space, featuring an outdoor classroom and a native plant sensory garden, designed to foster hands-on learning, creativity, and connection with the natural world. These investments reflect our commitment to outdoor education, environmental stewardship, and holistic student development.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

Over the next five years, Hydrostone Academy will continue to expand and deepen the ways we serve students and families, guided by our mission of fostering curiosity, creativity, and wellbeing. We plan to enhance our outdoor and experiential learning spaces, including the outdoor classroom, sensory garden, and nature-based programming. Academically, we will continue to strengthen personalized learning, transdisciplinary projects, and hands-on experiences across all grades.
Our heritage building is a treasured part of our identity, and we plan to restore it to its original beauty while making environmentally sustainable upgrades, such as solar panels and other green initiatives, to meet the needs of modern life. Together with expanded supports for social-emotional wellbeing and inclusive community, these plans ensure Hydrostone Academy remains a rigorous, creative, and sustainable learning environment.

K (current) — Our daughter enjoys her Grade 1 class so much. She appreciates the creative play, art, as well as the math and science instruction. She benefits so much from the small class size, where her teachers can help the kids develop healthy and positive relationships with each other. The small class size also gives her teachers the flexibility to customize her learning and provide her with academic challenges when she wants them. They are also helping our daughter grow, and we are seeing clear progress in areas that she struggled with, such as performing. Her teachers create an incredibly warm learning environment with their attention to detail, including a special quiet space to help kids regulate with calming sensory objects. It’s thrilling to see our daughter’s classroom learning spillover into our home life – she spontaneously hand-knits, writes the date on her drawings, performs classroom songs, creates storybooks, and enjoys her homework.

Gr. 4 (current),Gr. 1 (current) — Both of our children have found Hydrostone Academy to be a very safe, welcoming & inclusive space where they can focus on their education & having fun with their peers. Where their classes are much smaller than those at other schools in the area, our children are regularly given the opportunity to go on different field trips to museums, musical performances, etc. The music program is amazing - the input of the students is truly valued, and you can see how much fun they have learning new songs, as there are regular showcases where the students are given the opportunity to perform. The school also hosts private music lessons - one of our kids just began taking Fiddle lessons at the school, which they are really excited about. There are many different clubs and extracurricular activities - for example, one of our kids is a member of a Gardening Club, while our other child attends a D&D club. The physical education program is fantastic - a focus on movement and building skills - everyone is included and encouraged to do their best. One of our kids isn't interested in organized sports but regularly comments about how much fun they have in gym class. All of the teachers present the children with unique and engaging ways to learn.

Gr. 4 (current) — Hydrostone Academy has been an absolute godsend for my son. Although my son has done fine at other schools, there is something about Hydrostone Academy that is like no other school in Halifax. This is the first time that my son has come home at the end of the day without complaining. Sure, there are aspects of every school day that children don't like (i.e., homework), but he comes home happy, eager to tell us about his day and everything he has learned. Art class, intramurals, physical education, and math class are his highlights. The only thing that my son finds disappointing is the small grounds to play on at recess and lunchtime. My son loves to play soccer and basketball; if the school had the space to have these outside, then the school would be an 11/10 in his eyes.

Gr. 8 (current) — My daughter moved to the Hydrostone Academy in Grade 8. What attracted her to the school was the small class size and the variety of learning experiences. She appreciated the frequent field trips, which included overnight camping, where she learned valuable outdoor and survival skills. Within the classroom, there was the opportunity to develop relationships with her teachers, where she understood their teaching style and they understood her learning style. Students at the Hydrostone Academy are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions without judgment or fear of ridicule. My daughter also appreciated that the school values individuality and encourages students to be their true selves. The music program was a true highlight of my daughter’s school experience. She loved performing, and we were amazed to see her step out of her comfort zone.

Nursery/Toddler to Gr. 9,Nursery/Toddler to Gr. 9 — My children attended Hydrostone Academy from Pre-Primary to Grade 9. Their experience was fantastic. They always felt seen - for their strengths and their challenges. The ethos of the school promotes a culture of kindness and respect, and this creates an environment where the kids always felt supported by their teachers, the executive, and their peers. As little people, their days were filled with unique learning experiences that resulted in the integration of the lessons without them feeling the pressure to perform in traditional learning styles. For example, I remember them learning multiplication while skipping, which really enhanced the experience and retention of the material. The younger grades really foster individuality and creativity, making the experience of elementary school really joyful and low-stress. By middle school, we could really see that the kids were learning how to think critically - a real essential in today's world. The kids felt really empowered to speak their minds and explore their interests and ideas within and outside of the classroom. A favourite part of school was the outdoor education focus. All throughout their schooling, they spent a tremendous amount of time outside - whether it be walks around the neighbourhood to look at plants or overnight camping trips. My kids developed a tremendous love of and respect for the natural world from a very young age, and their school experience had a big part in reinforcing that. The parts that became frustrating for them were the class sizes as they got closer to high school age. While the small classes were perfect when they were younger and in early middle school, they became really aware of the need for a larger social circle as they neared high school. They also missed out on a lot of team sports - largely because there are just not enough kids to have a large number of teams.

Gr. 2 (current),K (current) — My children have been attending Hydrostone for over two years now. Our family often reflects with deep gratitude on the role this school and the community we have become a part of have in our lives. When we moved to Halifax from overseas, we sought out an environment that would provide our children with the social-emotional foundation in their early years that they could carry forward into their teenage years and adult lives. Initially, the school webpage was our sole source of information, but after a short visit and tour from one of the elementary teachers, it was clear to us that this philosophy reflected the day-to-day running of the school. We have two very different children who are motivated in completely different ways, and the school environment enabled them both to thrive. For example, one of our children struggled with literacy but is also deeply thoughtful. The other aims for good grades but struggled in their social connections. Their teachers impressed us by their ability to see the good in our children and help them overcome their weaknesses, all the while instilling a positive sense of self. The school also has a learning approach that truly meets kids where they were. For example, my child learned math through making salsa and was eager to make some at home. Teachers often come up with unconventional and creative ways to teach that replace worksheets and long periods of sitting with dynamic movement and play. It is fantastic to belong to a flexible, innovative community that is not afraid to try new things. One of my children struggled at one point with finding their friends. While the small class sizes have many advantages, the disadvantage for them was that they were not able to connect with different children when their primary peer relationships were going through a hard time. However, this eventually resolved on its own. Neither of my children has expressed any disappointments with the school or with their teachers.

JK (current),JK (current) — The student community at Hydrostone is very tight-knit, and inclusiveness is a big part of the school culture – students genuinely support one another, they value diversity, and they work to create a space where everyone can belong. I see my children benefiting from that culture and facilitating it themselves. My kids, who are now in middle school, have been fortunate to have attended here since pre-primary, and they see the school as a second home. It is also a very common story among Hydrostone parents whose children transfer from other school environments where they were not thriving that they see their child really come alive after joining the school community—finding connections and, through them, developing a new love for school and learning. Small class sizes and a small school overall allow students and teachers to build strong relationships.

Parent, Calla Lachance (2026)

Gr. 8 (current) — Our son enjoys the school's strong integration of rigorous academics, coupled with a vibrant arts program and meaningful community engagement. The school hosts a weekly "forum" discussion across multiple grades, and the community guest speakers (often prominent community and cultural leaders) introduce the students to important knowledge, current, historic and cultural, to foster critical thinking and social awareness. He loves the student-centred music and theatre programs, and engaging, multi-day, nature-based trips that have fostered connection amongst his peers. In a short time, our son formed meaningful friendships across middle school, and he is thriving academically with a renewed sense of confidence. He is now looking ahead to Grade 9 with excitement—something we never imagined he would say. He also loves that there is a sense of generosity and sharing across all the grades, removing the invisible line of hierarchy (which he felt in his previous school of 1000 students), that generates a warmer, welcoming environment. He genuinely feels respected, safe and cared for as he goes about his day.

Parent, Erica Adams (2026)

JK (current),JK (current) — When your children are consistently excited about going to school and don’t want to leave at the end of the day, you know you’re in the right place. Our kids have a true sense of belonging and safety with peers and teachers. Their independence is welcomed, and their uniqueness is respected and celebrated. Small classroom sizes allow trusting relationships to form and confidence to grow, and I see this in both my kids every day. Teachers find creative and engaging ways to teach all subjects, and peer mentorship has been such an amazing opportunity for my kids. They get the chance to be a leader with younger kids and form relationships with older ones. If I asked my kids what they like most, it would be the teachers.

Parent, Jose Mejia (2026)

Gr. 10 (current) — Hydrostone has been excellent for my son. Classes are really small, and teachers devote a lot of time to attending to students. They also catered to his special needs and helped him to adapt to his new environment. He has participated in theatre and movies, which have helped him develop very good social skills, besides great knowledge about acting. He plays piano and has enjoyed joining the music class very much. Despite the loss of my dear wife to cancer, I am sure that the Hydrostone community has helped him to adapt substantially and has given him great self-esteem and some leadership skills. Kids also learn to adapt very well, given the diversity of students and staff. The school teaches them how to eliminate judgmental attitudes and to respect and embrace human diversity and qualities.

Parent, Claire Simmons (2026)

(4.9)

JK (current) — My child loves the warm and nurturing learning environment. There is a culture of respect between teachers and students that inspires and engages my six-year-old. As a grade one student, they are transitioning from very play-based learning to a more academic focus in a way that is thoughtful, developmentally appropriate and fun. The class sizes and teacher-to-student ratios are exceptional and allow for plenty of one-on-one support and personalized learning. My child is very active and prefers to be outside. Our family, both parents and student, appreciates the outdoor education core pillar at Hydrostone Academy. This engages my child's daily movement needs in a way that I feel is natural and inspires curiosity. Most importantly, my child experiences a deep sense of belonging at Hydrostone Academy that I'm sure has been and will continue to be an advantage in their adult life.

Parent, Samuel Bolton (2026)

Preschool (current) — The teachers foster a genuine joy in learning and reading, expanding their lexicon. Hearing kids in his grade 2 class claiming the "penultimate" spot in line to go outside warmed my heart. He has the freedom to expand and grow in areas he already excels in and isn't being held back to keep pace with the class. He is also being supported in areas where he needs a bit more help or attention. My child appreciates that if he has energy that he needs to burn off, he can take a break from class and use the mini trampoline or jump on a stationary bike for a few minutes to get his focus back. The school is great at fostering a general state of kindness towards members in the school and the broader community.

Parent, Susan Joudrey (2026)

Preschool (current) — My child's experience has been excellent and rewarding. He appreciates how welcoming the school is, and that teachers and staff are genuinely interested in encouraging learning through his interests and at his own pace. He has never felt reluctant about attending school or participating in school activities because he knows that Hydrostone Academy provides a safe learning environment that emphasizes and celebrates his strengths while providing him with tools and strategies to overcome challenges. Even when a new concept or subject can be frustrating, he trusts the teachers to support his success. The curriculum is integrated, so he's benefited from the ability to combine his love of language and science into specific projects. There have been occasions when teachers have even adapted projects in ways that still meet academic achievement goals but include special interests and encourage deep learning. The teachers provide opportunities for him to feel successful in his learning.

Parent, Andrew Cranmer (2026)

Preschool (current),Preschool (current) — My kids have had an amazing experience at the school. Both academically and socially, they have thrived throughout their time at Hydrostone Academy. Their teachers allow the kids to explore topics that appeal to them while, at the same time, providing ample opportunity for outdoor education, music, drama, and the arts. One of the beautiful aspects of the school is the ongoing relationships and support the kids have with their peers. Many of whom will return for concerts and plays to celebrate and support their friends, even after they've left the school. While COVID was a challenging time for the culture at Hydrostone Academy, there is an amazing culture of support amongst the families, the kids, as well as the teachers and staff. The space has given us confidence as parents that our kids are cared for while at school on a day-to-day basis. The teachers see the kids every day for who they are and what they need. WE have made some lifelong friends with other parents at the school and would take our kids through again, without hesitation.
