(5) Student Experience
Both of our children have found Hydrostone Academy to be a very safe, welcoming & inclusive space where they can focus on their education & having fun with their peers. Where their classes are much smaller than those at other schools in the area, our children are regularly given the opportunity to go on different field trips to museums, musical performances, etc. The music program is amazing - the input of the students is truly valued, and you can see how much fun they have learning new songs, as there are regular showcases where the students are given the opportunity to perform. The school also hosts private music lessons - one of our kids just began taking Fiddle lessons at the school, which they are really excited about. There are many different clubs and extracurricular activities - for example, one of our kids is a member of a Gardening Club, while our other child attends a D&D club. The physical education program is fantastic - a focus on movement and building skills - everyone is included and encouraged to do their best. One of our kids isn't interested in organized sports but regularly comments about how much fun they have in gym class. All of the teachers present the children with unique and engaging ways to learn.
Why Hydrostone Academy?
We had to find a school that was a better fit for our family. We considered a few other options, but once we had a tour of Hydrostone Academy, we were sold. It's an old, yet beautiful historic building - the classrooms are spacious & filled with lots of natural sunlight. The entire staff is amazing & very welcoming. The school is also located in a great part of Halifax's North End - close to the Hydrostone Market and Needham Park.
Expectations vs. Reality
The school has done an incredible job of meeting the individual needs of our children. A huge benefit of the smaller classrooms is that each child can receive the attention they need in order to thrive. Being a smaller independent school, the resources may not be what you can find at a larger school - but we knew that going in, and the school has done an amazing job with helping us navigate through some challenges & was instrumental in finding the necessary support that we required.
Your Advice
It's difficult to narrow it down to one thing - but I would say that this is a small school with a big heart. The staff really care about their role and are such amazing leaders for our children.
