The big picture on Trinity Montessori School

We summarized the school ourselves

Trinity Montessori School has earned a reputation for offering a strong academic program that maintains high fidelity to the core principles of the Montessori approach, as demonstrated by CCMA accreditation. The program is regularly assessed through certification and EQAO testing, attracting families with its keen attention to the development of core numeracy, literacy, and early exposure to French. The size of the school hits a sweet spot, allowing for a full range of curricular and extracurricular programming while also maintaining a close, personal, community-oriented feel. The ideal student is one who thrives in a hands-on, social, and challenging yet supportive academic environment.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Trinity Montessori School was established in 1999 and is a CCMA accredited school located in Markham. We have an excellent reputation and receive many of our students through direct referral from current and former parents. Our staff members are friendly and nurturing. We strive to instill in children self confidence and a passion for learning through our diverse and enriched educational environment. We offer stimulating intellectual and cultural experiences for children from 1.5 to 14 years old."

  • Founded in 1999
  • Students range from 18 months to 12 years old
  • Located in the heart of Markham
  • Accredited Montessori program
  • Enriching opportunities to showcase student ability in writing, art and math contests
  • Excels in provincial standardized testing, such as EQAO and CAT
  • Develops students into global citizens through initiatives such as Montessori Model United Nations
  • Low student-teacher ratio

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

We are an authentic Montessori school and use hands-on Montessori materials, multi-age classrooms, and teacher-guided discovery, to build strong foundations in reading, writing, grammar, mathematics, French, science, and cultural studies. We are especially proud of how early our students develop independence, confidence, and academic discipline. Through oral presentations, contests, field trips, and opportunities such as Montessori Model United Nations, students learn not only to master content, but to communicate, think globally, and take pride in their work.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

We have chosen depth, consistency, and academic readiness over a more casual or loosely structured school experience. Montessori learning gives children independence, but at Trinity that independence is supported by clear expectations, regular practice, strong teacher guidance, homework in the elementary years, and ongoing assessment. We also choose a five-day program because children benefit most when the Montessori environment is consistent and uninterrupted. Our tradeoff is intentional: we prioritize steady growth, responsibility, and strong foundations that prepare students well for future schooling.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Trinity Montessori School was established in 1999 with a clear purpose: to provide children in Markham with a nurturing, academically strong, authentic Montessori education. That founding vision continues to shape us today. A major milestone came in 2007, when we opened our North Campus beside our main school building on Woodbine Avenue, allowing our community to grow while remaining close-knit. Our CCMA accreditation has also been important because it affirms our commitment to high standards in Montessori practice. Over the years, our reputation has grown largely through referrals from current and former families, which reflects the trust built through consistent teaching, low staff turnover, and long-term relationships.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Students who do well at Trinity are curious, capable of growing independence, and ready to be part of a warm but purposeful learning environment. They do not need to arrive already advanced; however, they should be open to learning, trying, practising, and gradually taking responsibility for their work. Our program suits children who benefit from structure, close teacher attention, hands-on learning, and a strong academic pace. Families who are a good fit tend to value long-term development over quick results. They appreciate communication with teachers, consistency between home and school, and a balanced education that includes academics, character, confidence, physical activity, and community life.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

We would not be the best fit for families looking for a very casual preschool experience, part-time attendance fewer than five days a week, or an environment where academics are kept deliberately light. We would also advise families to look carefully at whether they want an authentic Montessori setting, because our classrooms require patience, independence, respect for materials, and trust in the child’s developmental process. In elementary, students should be prepared for homework, regular assessments, presentations, and an advanced academic pace. Families seeking a large-school environment, extensive competitive athletics, or a highly technology-centred program may find that our priorities are different from theirs.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families often choose Trinity because they are looking for an early preschool start that feels warm and nurturing, while still offering the academic strength and structure they want for long-term growth. Parents frequently tell us they appreciate our strong focus on language, mathematics, confidence-building presentations, and the way teachers know each child personally. For many families, Trinity offers the right balance: a caring, family-like environment where children feel secure, paired with high expectations that help them become independent, capable, and well-prepared for the next stage of learning.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

Our smaller environment also matters more than families may first realize; it allows teachers to notice each child closely and support both academic and personal growth.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

Our improvements continue to focus on strengthening the full student experience rather than changing our core identity. We have continued to refine our elementary program so students benefit from both Montessori principles and Ontario curriculum expectations, with differentiated lessons that respond to how children learn. We also continue to support a broad experience through French, cultural studies, physical activity, field trips, presentations, and extracurricular options such as chess, choir, piano, visual art, advanced French, Mandarin, Cantonese, and movement-based activities.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

Our smaller environment also matters more than families may first realize; it allows teachers to notice each child closely and support both academic and personal growth.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

Our improvements continue to focus on strengthening the full student experience rather than changing our core identity. We have continued to refine our elementary program so students benefit from both Montessori principles and Ontario curriculum expectations, with differentiated lessons that respond to how children learn.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

We will also continue developing opportunities that help students communicate confidently, think independently, and understand the wider world. Our goal is not to become a larger or less personal school; it is to become even stronger at what families trust us to do: know each child well, build strong foundations, and help students become self-directed, capable, and confident learners.

Trinity Montessori School is like our daughter’s second home. She started in the Casa program at the age of 2.5 and is now in grade 6, her final year of the Elementary program. If you ask her for feedback about the school, there are only positive things. She has a deep sense of belonging and close bonding with her classmates and teachers. The school fosters a safe, positive and supportive environment, which builds her confidence. She feels safe to speak up and be herself while not afraid of being judged. In addition to academic excellence, the school also focuses on character building. We appreciate the amazing teachers and dedicated principal who have inspired our daughter to have a positive attitude in learning and be a better citizen. She is well-prepared when she moves on to her next chapter.

My children spent most of their childhood at Trinity Montessori School. They loved the field trips especially those to Ottawa and New York City. They loved the small size class. They would share their stories with me even in the car driving home. They loved their uniform! And were very proud of wearing that. They loved their snack and lunchtimes. And especially pizza days. They loved the library hours where they could pick their own books. I remember they had a yoga class. My kids would come home and show me the tree pose! I don’t think they ever come home with any disappointments. Overall, it’s very close to a perfect experience there. I never have any doubts about this school. My kids were very well taken care of.

Both of our daughters have been going to Trinity Montessori School since they were 18 months old, and both of them have developed a true love for learning. Over the years, we have witnessed their growth socially, intellectually and physically, and I attribute a large part of that to the positive learning environment that the school has created. My older daughter entered her toddler class as a shy little girl who was very hesitant to learn new things, and she graduated as a confident young lady with a supportive group of friends. We especially appreciate that the school encourages the students to develop not only intellectually, but also through play, social events and being in touch with our community. Overall, our experience at Trinity Montessori School has been extremely positive.
