Private schools, of course, intend to offer an alternative, and Kendellhurst is a great example of that. The program is founded in an approach to ECE that borrows the best from Montessori and other alternative approaches, yet does it in a very tailored, intentional way in order to best address the needs of the students that attend. It's less about doctrine than meeting the specific needs of student population. There are three locations, though all feel a piece of the communities that they sit within, something that the Streetsville location is a particularly good example of. The educational context is local, small, and integrated with the needs of the families that enroll here. The feel is homey, comfortable, and supportive, and camp sessions allow families to extend that experience into the summer months, providing an opportunity for continuity between school terms. Organic meals and after school programs are included with tuition, something that can provide a welcome support to the daily management of family life.
View full reportIn Maria Montessori’s day, the most obviously remarkable thing about her approach to education was how she chose to adapt the learning space. It was open, diverse, organized yet amorphous, with common areas that weren’t dedicated to any specific learning task. That was revolutionary both for what it was, as for the way it positioned the learner. Montessori wanted to build from a child’s curiosity and engagement with the world, and her learning spaces were organized with that in mind. In kind, those are the ideals that Enquiring Minds expresses so well. To have that kind of conceptual space you need physical space—space to move around in, to move through—and the openness and extent of the EM environment is one of its great assets. Likewise, there is an attention to ranging across the curriculum, rather than siloing each separate from the others; the arts program isn’t ancillary to the other curricular areas, for example, but instead is a foundational aspect of learning across them. The attention to values—respect for the space as well as those within it—is also a primary draw for the families who enroll. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a diverse, hands-on, and challenging yet supportive social and academic environment.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. As a well-rounded school environment, Kendellhurst has a strong arts program. SK to grade 3 students have recorder lessons bi-weekly while students in grades 4 and up may choose guitar, piano or flute. Kendellhurst offers a strong visual arts program with 3 curriculum driven field trips to the AGO, ROM, TSO or YPT! We offer hip hop dance on a monthly basis too! A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.

All classrooms have 80 inch digital interactive displays allowing a complete and seamless teaching and learning environment in the evolving digital world. Computers (both Mac and PC) are available to every classroom from preschool to grade 8. Preschool and kindergarten focus on basic usage including phonics games, basic typing and respecting the computer. Grades 1 through 4 have light usage in class with typing tutorials and basic understanding of some programs and apps. Lessons are bi-weekly. Grades 5 to 8 use computers almost daily to assist in research, reports, presenting, printing and typing. Students in grades 5 to 8 also have personal Chromebook using the EDWIN program from Nelson Education.
We will consult the internet if a child shows an interest in a particular item or issue. We have added Beginner, and Advanced Photoshop into our Upper Elementary Photography Program. Physical education and staying active are vital to all students. We encourage various team and individual sports, including soccer, floor hockey, basketball, running, track and field, baseball and much more. Kendellhurst has four school house leagues that incorporate all age groups for internal school games and events. We offer monthly rotating classes of yoga, Zumba, box fit and hip hop dance through experienced and specialized instructors. These programs are included in our tuition.
We allow in our schedule 2 hours of outdoor play a day and work in our gross motor skills space on a daily basis as well.

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. Autism Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome). | ||||
Asperger's Syndrome On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour. | ||||
Down syndrome his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics. | ||||

Troubled behaviour / troubled teens roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. Clinical Depression This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life. | ||||
Clinical anxiety This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror. | ||||
Suicidal thoughts This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life. | ||||
Drug and alcohol abuse This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning. | ||||

Cerebral palsy his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture. | ||||
Muscular dystrophy Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals. | ||||
Spina Bifida This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine. | ||||
Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder) This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech. | ||||
Blindness Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness." | ||||

We suggest parents first visit our school with their child for an initial tour to assess whether the academic climate is appropriate for their child. We then offer a one day visit for us to assess each student's needs and how/if we can accommodate any special needs.
The Montessori Method is effective in pre-school, elementary school and high school. In addition, Montessori techniques can be used successfully with gifted children and children with learning disabilities and other special needs.
