SEM Sophomore Wins National Award in Computing

Tara Porter '17 has received the Award for Aspirations in Computing from the National Center for Women & Information Technology. Tara is the Upstate NY Affiliate Winner, one of about 10 winners and runner-ups in Upstate NY.

The award recognizes young women around the country for their aspirations in the field of computer science and math and science in general. Tara said, "With the award, I am now a part of a circle of women around the country who share the same interests, and it will be easier for me to connect with internships and scholarships."

Tara is a student in the Online School for Girls Intro to Computer Programming course this year, and she has a personal and life changing project underway. "I'm also working on creating a program to automate my mom's bed so that it will tilt up and down by voice command, with my dad's help."

Tara is also an accomplished violinist and vocalist, an actress, and honor roll student.
