Big Kid / Little Kid Fiesta

The Grade 12 Spanish class made a trip to Kawartha Montessori School as part of their unit of study about childhood. They organized cultural and linguistic activities for the children in the "Casa" program (ages 4-6 years old).

The Grade 12 students organized special hands-on activities to teach the KMS children some cultural and linguistic aspects of Spanish. The afternoon was all about the elements of a good "fiesta"; they worked with the children to make quesadillas and guacamole, got them dancing to Latin music and taught them to make "papel picado"  decorations.

The LCS students were also paired up with KMS students to brainstorm ideas for a story project. As a culminating task for the unit, the LCS students will each be writing a children's story for their KMS friends. It will be written in Spanish, translated into English and "published" as a bilingual storybook. The KMS students will be the illustrators.

The field trip was a wonderful day of sharing and learning from each other. It concluded with a celebratory feast with the food that had been prepared followed by a dance party. Both groups of students are looking forward to meeting again in a few weeks times to share the stories.
