On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 the two classes in grade five and the grade 10 Civics class went on a tremendously exciting trip to Queen’s Park. At Queen’s Park we went to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a place where you can experience an adventure with the government.
Firstly, we entered the building and as lucky as we were, we met Kathleen Wynne, the Premier of Ontario! We saw more MPP’s that represented different ridings as well. Also, we went over the three levels of government and their responsibilities. We went to a small replica room of the chamber. Luke got to dress up as the Speaker and sit in the Speaker’s chair, Fikaya was the Sergeant-At-Arms and Van was the Clerk.
Then we were ready to go to the real legislative chamber. There the tour guide talked about the things that were carved in the walls. She told us their meanings such as an owl that represents wisdom and the eagle that watches to make sure people are making wise decisions.
Next, we went to the area where years ago a fire damaged the building. Apparently the fire started because some workers were using charcoal burners and fixing cracks in the roof, but they went for lunch and left the burners on. This started a fire, burnt down their library and some office space. Because of that they put a lot of marble replacing the wood.
After that we had lunch outside and headed back to the school. We had so much fun on this field trip and learned a lot.
