    Curriculum

    Traditional

    Traditional

    Curriculum pace

    Accelerated
The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Rigorous
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

    Our Take

    Our Take

    MCDONALD INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

McDonald was founded in 1994 to deliver a quality university preparation for students in Canada as well as those arriving from around the world. Ever since, it’s been doing exactly that. The school maintains a small, almost exclusive feel, especially when compared with some of the larger international schools found in Ontario and beyond. The two campuses augment that feel, and students enter a close-knit academic and social community. All of the important supports are in place to appeal to the international learner, from language support, to assistance with daily life, to university counselling. The downtown campus, perhaps especially, is proximate to a rich range of resources, including the nearby University of Toronto campus. The school prides itself on offering a strong academic basis for university entry, as well as a rich and rewarding social experience. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a very vibrant, diverse, challenging and urban academic context.

    CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Cambridge International Academy is positioned to address a diversity of learners, including those who arrive domestically and those arriving from overseas. Families are drawn to the small class sizes and the individual instruction they allow, as well as the international gaze afforded through working and learning with students from a range of cultural backgrounds and experiences. English language learning and homestay programs support international students. While the academic program is strong, families are also drawn to the focus on interpersonal, emotional, and social development. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a close-knit, challenging environment, and who is preparing for success at university.

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

MIA implements guidelines from the Ontario Ministry of Education and works with various education consultants that help guide our teachers and staff. MIA also believes learning extends beyond the classroom and incorporates many field trips throughout the year to facilitate real world learning. A variety of courses are offered at MIA, enabling students to take the specific subjects required to prepare them for their post-secondary education.

      CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Our teachers acknowledge students learn at different times and in different ways therefore they use an interactive teaching strategy to best suit a student's learning profile and our teachers are facilitators and mentors, encouraging critical thought and self-reflection, while also promoting cooperative and independent learning. We provide an enriched, balanced curriculum with a focus on core academics, as well as music, art, and drama. We offer continuous, varied and appropriate formative as well as summative assessments which provide evidence about every student's learning progress. This information helps teachers to immediately flag areas of concern to help a student in that subject. Triangulation assessments also help students, parents and teachers to select attainable learning goals. For students in high school, we administer Aptitude Tests to help each student plan their further education. The high school programs offer a rigorous university preparatory curriculum and give special attention to soft skills needed for success such as students learn organization, self-advocacy, note-taking, study skills, collaboration, and communication.

Our Grade 1 through 8 Mathematics program is built around the Singapore Math approach, which by design ensures foundational mastery in underlying mathematical procedures and teaches students to learn and master mathematical concepts at greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using a three-stage learning process: concrete, pictorial, and abstract. As well, Singapore Math uses the three-stage learning process to engage students in thinking critically about mathematical problems and concepts. The high school mathematics program delivers the Ontario Mathematics curriculum. The program emphasizes mastery of a wide range of mathematical skills and logic-based thinking with regular opportunities for discovery through proofs, manipulatives and technology. Our teachers use us a variety of teaching approach between exploratory methods and formal methods, where the latest technologies are utilized for exploring the wide range of mathematical applications while providing foundational mastery for the development of mathematical fluency.

Science is an exciting subject to teach students how things work in our world. In our Elementary grades, Science is inquiry-based and in the context of real-world phenomena, using real materials to make connections between scientific theory, technology, and their everyday lives. Most lessons focus on acquiring skills and knowledge through hands-on experiences and supports direct-instruction of scientific theory. The high school Science program delivers the Ontario curriculum thoroughly and emphasis placed on inquiry-based learning and on knowledge acquisition through a variety of instructional methods such as peer to peer teaching, current events, case studies. Experiments are thoughtfully designed to enrich the students’ learning and give experience with instrumentation, procedures and lab reporting skills that will be utilized in their futures.

Literature is authentic material that promotes interaction among students in a classroom. Our teachers carefully choose material that will suit the interests of their students to spark in-depth class discussions, share opinions, and critical thinking. We have been successful to increase a student's reading interest by implementing Socratic Seminars, web-quests, current events, and reading journals. After completing a unit on literature, students feel a sense of achievement at understanding a piece of highly respected literature. In addition, teachers use the personal growth model which encourages students to draw on their own opinions, feelings, personal experiences and writing skills.

The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

      CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

      Our Take

      Our Take

      MCDONALD INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

      CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

MIA is a student's home away from home where the students, teachers and staff make up one big family. We believe strongly in helping students beyond the classroom by providing constant emotional support and individualized care.

      CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Cambridge International Academy keeps student-to-teacher ratio low so that we may focus on the individual needs of the student and support each student on his or her individual path to success. At Cambridge International Academy, we recognize that students have different learning styles. Our learning environment is set up to meet the needs of students .We use a complete approach, which reinforces verbal instruction with visual and written support, allowing the students to engage on many levels regarding the material being presented.
