Olivet was established in 1893, though through moves and development, the school doesn’t reflect its age. Nevertheless, there is a continuity which, if less overt, remains within the life of the school. The academic program is strong, though families also turn to Olivet due to an appreciation of the context that the school provides, including an attention to spiritual and personal growth. The aim of the school is to provide a foundation for life, and for learning after the children go on to other schools after grade 5. The property accesses green space, allowing the lessons to extend to those about environment and environmental stewardship. Parental involvement in all aspects of the life of the school is very high, a function of the school’s size. All of that combines to create a community atmosphere that extends beyond the classroom, and beyond the walls of the school. The ideal student is one who will thrive in a challenging, close-knit academic environment.

We have adopted a pure Singapore Math curriculum because Ontario’s standards don’t fully prepare students for success and lack structure. Our blended focus fosters deep conceptual understanding, structure, and critical thinking, all of which are essential for higher-level math. We recognized that the Ontario curriculum often lacks the rigor necessary for students to be competitive, so our goal is to ensure that by Grade 9, our students are on par with international math learners. At InnovOak, we teach math as a language through our "Speak Math" approach. This method encourages students to articulate their mathematical thinking clearly and confidently, treating math as a language to be mastered. By "Speaking Math", students gain a stronger understanding of the subject, improving both fluency and comprehension. This holistic approach not only prepares students for success in math but also keeps their post-secondary pathways open beyond Grade 11, where many typically struggle.
In PreK to Grade 8 we use Dimensions as our primary book. Teachers in Senior School are bound by AP and the OSSD, and will chose materials from the Trillium list that are current and are focused on university preparations.
At InnovOak, calculators are tools for advanced math, but students must develop fluency in basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) through daily homework. Calculators may be used for complex problems, but assessments will ensure students can perform basic operations without assistance to build strong math fundamentals.
Phonics-intensive
Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
Systematic-phonics programs teach young children to read by helping them to recognize and sound out the letters and syllables of words. Students are then led to blend these sounds together to sound out and recognize the whole word. While other reading programs might touch on phonetics (either incidentally or on a “when needed” basis), systematic phonics teaches phonics in a specific sequence, and uses extensive repetition and direct instruction to help readers associate specific letter patterns with their associated sounds.
We go beyond basic pre-reading skills to develop reading fluency and comprehension early on. In preschool, we focus on pre-reading skills, and as students move into early JK, we begin whole group reading lessons. We use Heggerty, UFLI, and Scarborough’s Reading Rope creating a structured approach to reading instruction, focusing on all critical components: phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. Expanding Communities
Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. The curriculum is often organized according to the underlying logic of the content: history might be taught sequentially, for example (as students move through the grades).
The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. The communicative method of language acquisition emphasizes the use of the target language in authentic contexts. French is introduced from kindergarten onward. Our program is built around the acclaimed AIM method, which moves students rapidly into conversational French rather than just filling out worksheets and conjugating verbs. The students learn gestures to reinforce new vocabulary and build towards performing a French play at the end of the year. This program produces amazing results; one of the most important being that students enjoy, rather than dread their language classes.
We introduce French starting in JK, going beyond the Ontario curriculum to meet international language standards, specifically the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This framework ensures that our students exceed basic Ontario expectations by focusing on proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Olivet music program starts in kindergarten and lays a solid foundation of delight as well as competency in music. Starting with basic songs, rhymes and percussion instruments at the younger levels and working towards reading, writing and performing music on a range of Orff instruments, Olivet students receive an inspiring, creative and thorough background in music. Our Christmas concert and Spring Music night whole-school concerts are a highlight for parents and extended families. Drama and dance are integrated into our French and music programs for the students in Grades 1 to 5, in our French Show in the spring and musical production near the end of the school year. Dance is further supplemented as part of the physical education program. In the Kindergarten class, students memorize and perform poems and short skits throughout the school year for the rest of the school.

At Olivet, we believe that children learn best from people, not machines. Technology is a tool, but it isn’t a substitute for hands-on learning. Even in our upper-year classrooms, most work is completed by hand. When deemed appropriate by the teacher, students have access to a classroom laptop. They use it for the given task and return it to the teacher when they finish.
We focus on teaching students how to use technology to enhance their learning and communication skills. Beginning with keyboarding, we ensure students can communicate fluently and use productivity tools effectively. At Olivet School we introduce students to a wide range of games and sports, develop coordination; ball skills and fitness; instill qualities of teamwork and perseverance; and include lots of fun. Our physical education program follows the Ontario curriculum, emphasizing a commitment to healthy lifestyles and fitness. We offer a well-rounded approach, incorporating individual and team sports, helping students develop skills in participation, teamwork, and self-discipline. Beyond traditional activities, we include non-traditional options such as rock climbing, skating, and swimming, giving students the chance to challenge themselves in new ways. The program is based on PPL1O, PPL2O, and PPL3O, with a focus on physical fitness, active living, and mental well-being. Academic
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Kindergarten is treated as a transition year to the formal education process. The children work on number, colour, shape and language skills, these are balanced with lots of attention on social development among peers and teachers. We introduce foundational ethical ideas: helpfulness, teamwork, caring for the environment, respectfulness and safety. Kindergarteners are taught about heaven, the presence of a loving Creator, and the constant care He provides through angels and parents.

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.

While we do not offer in-house programs for specialized support services such as social work, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP), we fully support external providers coming into the school during the school day to deliver these programs. We believe that facilitating access to these services, identified by parents as essential, ensures the best outcomes for students and their families. By allowing these services to be provided on-site, we make it easier for students to benefit from them, increasing the likelihood of program success. We have established connections with professionals in the fields of social work, OT, PT, and SLP, and can refer parents to trusted partners when needed. Additionally, we can recommend counselors and social workers when appropriate, offering families a network of support to ensure their child's educational and developmental success.
Exceptional children who are able to play and learn alongside typical children are accommodated in a variety of ways at Olivet. More serious learning or behavioural difficulties are best addressed in an educational facility specifically suited to the child's needs.
At InnovOak, we do not actively seek students who require an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). However, if challenges arise, we leverage our special education expertise, Student Success model, and staff skills to create learning plans and IEPs tailored to the student’s needs. We work closely with families to ensure effective support is provided. If needs evolve, we collaborate with parents to discuss future academic goals and potential pathways, including whether a different setting may be more suitable. We also explore creative options, such as adding resource support or staff capacity. If helpful, we may consider the use of Educational Assistants or tutors, with these services provided by the school but funded in addition to tuition.

1. Tour: Complete a school tour and classroom visit.
2. Interview: Parents/Guardians meet with the principal.
3. Records: Provide the school with copies of the student’s two most recent report cards and assessment materials (if applicable).
4. Teacher assessment: Student meets with the classroom teacher individually or joins the classroom for the morning.
5. Register: Upon receipt of an acceptance letter, complete the registration form and pay $500 non-refundable deposit.
