Stratford Hall has grown phenomenally in its 15 years of life, from 40 students in its inaugural year to more than 500 today. It was begun by parents looking for a better option for their children, one that offered challenging academics as well as the full IB program, and those remain hallmarks of the school today. The IB program also provides the foundation for the physical plan, with three buildings housing the three aspects of the program, realized in 2014 with completion of the Middle Years building. Stratford Hall presents as modern, progressive, urban, and indeed, that’s precisely the intention—the architecture is inviting, while also referencing the surrounding neighbourhood. Jason McBride was appointed head of school in 2015, arriving from a like position at GEMS World Academy in Dubai, and underscoring the international perspective promoted across the curricular areas. The ideal student is one that will thrive in a vibrant, challenging, and intellectually active academic environment.

Nevertheless, there is a continuity which, if less overt, remains within the life of the school. The academic program is strong, though families also turn to Olivet due to an appreciation of the context that the school provides, including an attention to spiritual and personal growth. The aim of the school is to provide a foundation for life, and for learning after the children go on to other schools after grade 5. The property accesses green space, allowing the lessons to extend to those about environment and environmental stewardship. Parental involvement in all aspects of the life of the school is very high, a function of the school’s size. All of that combines to create a community atmosphere that extends beyond the classroom, and beyond the walls of the school. The ideal student is one who will thrive in a challenging, close-knit academic environment.

Liberal Arts curricula share with traditional programs their emphasis on core knowledge-acquisition, but tend to borrow more best practices from the progressive approach. Stratford Hall is a K-12 International Baccalaureate (IB) World Continuum School. The IB forms the foundation of our pedagogical approach to teaching and learning and is divided into the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme, and the two-year Diploma Programme in which students undertake university-level work. All three phases are inquiry-based – driven by questions the students and teachers generate together – in order to develop knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. Students in the PYP are introduced to French and Spanish. In the MYP, Language Acquisition performance is assessed at six different phases. These phases represent a developmental continuum of additional language learning. Language Acquisition teachers work with students and parents to determine which phase of instruction is appropriate. Mandarin is an option starting in Grade 10. In the DP, students who are in phases 1-3 of their Language Acquisition in Grade 10 would be guided towards the study of that same language at the standard level in the DP. Students from K - Grade 10 participate in music, theatre and visual arts. In Grades 6-8, students complete a rotation of three Arts courses, one per term. They are Visual Arts, Music and Theatre Performance. In Grades 9 and 10, they choose one of five elective courses: Media Arts, Music, Photography, Theatre Performance, and Visual Arts. DP art students investigate past, present, and emerging forms of Visual Art and to engage in producing, appreciating, and evaluating an understanding of Visual Arts from local, national, and international perspectives. DP Theatre is a unique subject in that it is a practical art form; it is dynamic, collaborative, and live. It is a practical subject that encourages discovery through experimentation, the taking of risks, and the presentation of ideas to others. It results in the development of both theatre and life skills; the building of confidence, creativity, and collaboration skills.
The Olivet music program starts in preschool and lays a solid foundation of delight as well as competency in music. Starting from basic songs, rhymes and percussion instruments at the younger levels and working towards reading, writing and performing music on a range of Orff instruments, Olivet students receive an inspiring, creative and thorough background in music. Our two yearly whole school concerts are a highlight for parents and extended families. Drama and dance are integrated into our French and music programs for the students in Grades 1 to 5, in our French Show in the spring and musical production near the end of the school year. Dance is further supplemented as part of the physical education program. At Stratford Hall we strive to develop intelligent athletes that are lifelong participants in physical activity. We focus on developing physically literate students that have an understanding of the fundamental movement skills which will allow them to participate in a variety of activities. We do this by using the “Teaching Games for Understanding” model combined with the Primary Years and Middle Years Program guides and the IRP's from the BC Ministry of Education. We also have a strong Outdoor Environmental Education (OEE) program that starts in grade 4 and compliments the PE program. The OEE program focuses on water sports (kayaking, canoeing, sailing, stand up paddle boarding, dragon boating), winter activities (snow shoeing, cross country skiing, ice skating), hiking, rock climbing, Circus, and a number of service opportunities. The OEE program runs through grade 10.
Students are introduced to age appropriate physical activities as per the Ontario Curriculum. At Olivet School we introduce students to a wide range of games and sports, develop coordination; ball skills and fitness; instill qualities of teamwork and perseverance; and include lots of fun. Our emphasis is on participation, skill development and enjoyment rather than competition.

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.
Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. Stations often contain an indirect lesson or developmental goal. Play-based classrooms are highly social and active.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework of essential elements — the knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action that young students need to equip them for success. At Stratford Hall, these elements combine to create a transdisciplinary learning opportunity that is engaging, relevant and challenges each student to meet and exceed their own expectations. Kindergarten is treated as a transition year to the formal education process. The children work on number, colour, shape and language skills, these are balanced with lots of attention on social development among peers and teachers. We introduce foundational ethical ideas: helpfulness, teamwork, caring for the environment, respectfulness and safety. Kindergarteners are taught about heaven, the presence of a loving Creator, and the constant care He provides through angels and parents.

Olivet's amazing teacher-student ratio ensures each child gets the attention they need, with specialist teachers teaching music and French. When young children are placed in a two or three-grade learning environment that mirrors the family grouping, their learning is compounded by the experience of socializing with children of various ages.
Supportive
A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
The culmination of the PYP and MYP programmes is the Diploma Programme - a challenging university preparatory programme. International research from the IBO shows that despite its challenge, "there are many benefits to choosing the DP over other 16-19 curricula including the fact that DP students are better able than their peers to cope with demanding workloads, manage their time and meet the expectations placed on them."
Olivet teachers are able to set and achieve high standards for their students that exceed the Ontario Curriculum. Along with academics, the focus of learning at Olivet is the development of positive life attitudes such as self-acceptance and kindness towards others. At Olivet we know that memorizing math facts, and rules of spelling and writing create a firm foundation for a successful academic future. The IB forms the foundation of our pedagogical approach to teaching and learning and is divided into the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme, and the two-year Diploma Programme in which students undertake university-level work. All three phases are inquiry-based – driven by questions the students and teachers generate together – in order to develop knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.
Character traits such as kindness and honesty are supported on a daily basis. Using Biblical messages such as the 10 Commandments and the Golden Rule as a basis, students develop a sense of self and learn that what they think, say and do forms the basis of who they will become. Complete and submit an application form. A $300 one-time, non-refundable application fee is required (paid online with a credit card).

The SSAT and Character Skills Snapshot is a standardized test used by admission offices to assess the abilities of students seeking to enroll in an independent school. All students wishing to be considered for Grade 6 to Grade 11 must write the SSAT by January 31. Consideration for exemption will be given to students currently enrolled in an IB programme.

Step 3: Schedule a Parent Interview
Once you have access to your online applicant checklist, you will be able to arrange your parent interview. This is for parents only. There is no need to make special arrangements to have your child attend this interview.
1. Tour: Complete a school tour and classroom visit.
2. Interview: Parents/Guardians meet with the principal.
3. Records: Provide the school with copies of student’s two most recent report cards and assessment materials (if applicable).
4. Teacher assessment: Student meets with classroom teacher individually or joins the classroom for the morning. (Not required for kindergarten).
5. Register: Upon receipt of an acceptance letter, complete registration form and pay $500 non-refundable deposit.
