I sit on the Hillfield Strathallan College board of alumni. Whether through board initiatives or outside initiatives, the Hillfield Strathallan College alumni are so excited to come back to the school. I remember being in early high school or middle school, and I would look up at the lunch hall and see alumni sitting with teachers who had just decided to come back for a meal and say hello. Again, you really have to involve your kids in this decision if they're old enough to realistically be a part of that decision, because it's so critically important that they're on board. And I don't mean to give the kid the whole decision. That's not what I mean at all because ultimately I do believe strongly that it should be this joint decision. But it's so important that we see that the kids want to be here because there's so much to take advantage of. And the kids that find the greatest success are the ones that do that.
—Marc Ayotte, Head of College (see full interview)
My children enjoy going to school mostly for the social aspect. My younger daughter has many friends and that makes school fun. Because she has a learning disability she finds learning difficult. There are some teachers that make learning fun while others not so much. My older daughter also enjoys going to school for the social aspect. Neither are high achieving academically so they don’t enjoy the school work so much. For students who don’t have as much interest in joining extracurricular activities, I wish the school would make it mandatory to participate in at least one activity or sport. For students who are interested in learning a musical instrument, the school allows lessons to be taught by private tutors during school hours. I believe the school is also very accommodating for students who pursue other activities outside of the school.
—Wendy Lam, parent (beginning 2019) (see full review)

Lifelong journeys and seamless transitions

Observations from administrators and alumni emphasize that Hillfield Strathallan College supports students from early childhood through to high school graduation, ensuring smooth transitions at various entry points and preparing them well for future academic pursuits.

For about a quarter of our students, I was just looking at the data, we have 140 graduates this year. 35 of them are what we call lifers. And so those are kids that have started with us since they were three or four years old and have gone all the way through, that's annually, a quarter of our population. That is their journey. They've never known anything else. And I think that's one of the things that makes us unique is that you can start here in diapers and work your way all the way through to cap and gown.
—Marc Ayotte, Head of College (see full interview)
But we have entry points at various points in the school. Obviously, our biggest one is grade nine. We usually bring in about 25 to 35 new grade nines. That's our biggest entry point. But there are other entry points along the way, because we have four schools too. There's just different times that families choose to join us. We're quite unique, actually, in that early age. We have two parallel streams. We have a Montessori program and we also have a junior school. And both of those funnel together and they come together into grade five in middle school. So the two separate streams both start at 18 months, 16 months, and then go to grade four, or Montessori nine, as we call it.
—Marc Ayotte, Head of College (see full interview)
