Ridley College ACADEMICS & EXTRACURRICULARS

Curriculum Progressive, International Baccalaureate

[Show definition of Curriculum]

Central to your child's school experience is the underlying curriculum taught in the classroom. "Curriculum" refers to both what is taught and how it's taught. When considering the different curricula outlined in the next few pages, keep in mind that few schools fall neatly into one category or another. Most schools' curricula comprise a blend of best practices drawn from multiple curriculum types. Having said that, most schools do have a general overall curriculum type. These are identified for each school on OurKids.net.

Curriculum approach at Ridley College: Progressive, International Baccalaureate

Ridley College has a Progressive, International Baccalaureate approach to Curriculum (as opposed to Traditional, Liberal Arts, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Waldorf approach).

[Show: About Progressive, International Baccalaureate?]

Our Kids definition: Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.

Compare Ridley College's Curriculum with other schools on OurKids.net:
  Progressive - 35%
  Traditional - 38%
  Liberal arts - 12%
  Montessori - 12%
  Reggio Emilia - 1%
  Waldorf - 2%

  • Early Reading

    What Ridley College says:

In the Lower School, we employ a structured literacy programme that draws on a variety of resources to support our young learners including SMARTER Intervention and Lexia. Both are comprehensive tools with a focus on essential early literacy skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. We use multifaceted benchmark assessments, such as SMARTER Intervention, DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), and OWA (Ontario Writing Assessment) to monitor and guide our instruction. These assessments help us identify areas where students may need additional support and allow us to adjust our teaching strategies accordingly. Additionally, we believe in the importance of applying literacy skills in a transdisciplinary manner. This means that our students are not only learning to read and write in isolation but are also using these skills across various subjects and real-life contexts through our units of inquiry.

DIBELS Testing: This school periodically uses DIBELS testing to assess reading progress.

Science approach at Ridley College: Inquiry

Ridley College has an Inquiry approach to Science (as opposed to Expository, Equal Balance approach).

    [Show: About Inquiry?]

Our Kids definition: Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. Students still learn foundational scientific ideas and content (and build on this knowledge progressively); however, relative to expository science instruction, inquiry-based programs have students spend more time developing and executing their own experiments (empirical and theoretical). Students are frequently challenged to develop critical and scientific-thinking skills by developing their own well-reasoned hypothesis and finding ways to test those hypotheses. Projects and experiments are emphasized over textbook learning. Skills are emphasized over breadth of knowledge.

Preschool/K Curriculum Academic

[Show definition of Preschool/K Curriculum]

Preschools and kindergartens tend to have a particular curriculum or curricular approach. This refers to what is taught and how it's taught. Most preschools have a curriculum that comprises a blend of best practices drawn from multiple curriculum types. A preschool's curriculum may or may not, though, reflect its higher-level curriculum (if it's part of a school with elementary or secondary programs)

Preschool/K Curriculum approach at Ridley College: Academic

Ridley College has an Academic approach to Preschool/K Curriculum (as opposed to Play-based, Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia approach).

[Show: About Academic?]

Our Kids definition: Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

Compare Ridley College's Preschool/K Curriculum with other schools on OurKids.net:
  Academic - 43%
  Play-based - 18%
  Montessori - 30%
  Waldorf - 2%

The Kindergarten programme at Ridley College provides a rich and stimulating inquiry and play-based learning environment that enables students to develop a sense of curiosity and an understanding of the world around them. Ridley College has an Accelerated approach to Curriculum Pace (as opposed to Standard-enriched, Student-paced approach).

[Show: About Accelerated?]

Our Kids definition: The main curriculum accelerates beyond the pace of the provincial one; ALL students do the work of OLDER public-school peers in tangible and measurable ways. This accelerated pace is maintained by the teachers and school, (through textbook selection, topic selection, grading, assignment standards and expectations, etc).

Academic Culture Rigorous

[Show definition of Academic Culture]

Through the collective mindset of teachers, administrators, students, and parents, each school develops and maintains its own academic culture. This generally relates to the norms and expectations created around academic performance. Many parents look to private schools because they want a specific type of culture. Some want a rigorous environment that will elevate their child to new heights. Others want a nurturing environment that will help their child develop a passion for learning.

Academic Culture approach at Ridley College: Rigorous

Ridley College has a Rigorous approach to Academic Culture (as opposed to Supportive approach).

[Show: About Rigorous?]

Our Kids definition: A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

Compare Ridley College's Academic Culture with other schools on OurKids.net:
  Rigorous - 52%
  Supportive - 48%

What Ridley College says about their academic culture:

Ridley College as an IB Continuum school has a rigorous approach to academics. That said, Ridley is a highly supportive school with a large team looking out for each student. Individual plans can be made and supported to help all students find successes.

Homework is work that's assigned to students for completion outside of regular class time. There's a long-standing debate over homework. Should homework be assigned to school-age children? If so, in what grades? And how much homework should be assigned? In selecting the right school for your child, it's important to look closely at a school's homework policy.

Report Card Policy

[Show definition of Report Card Policy]

While all schools measure individual progress and achievement in students, they have different ways of doing this. For instance, many traditional schools gauge progress through report cards, which give students lettered or numbered grades. Other schools, meanwhile, measure progress in other ways, either in addition to or instead of giving grades. For instance, they may offer prose-based feedback (i.e, comments), academic achievement reporting, habits and behaviour reporting, and parent-teacher meetings. In choosing the right school for your child, take a close look at its policy for measuring the individual progress of students.

A rigorous academic environment balanced by individualized support.

Reflections from students and alumni convey that the academic environment at Ridley College cultivates both ambition and collaboration, with supportive faculty fostering growth, respect, and engagement in a dynamic learning atmosphere.

The concept of flourishing is deeply embedded in every part of our program. We believe the primary purpose of education is to teach young people how to lead flourishing lives and help others do the same. As a boarding school, and even for our day students who live a boarding-style life, we are uniquely positioned to support balance: the pursuit of academic excellence alongside the pursuit of goodness and well-being. Our academic supports include a full learning center, peer and external tutoring, and evening study hours. At the same time, we emphasize personal development, emotional resilience, meaning, and purpose—skills rooted in the science of positive psychology.
It all comes down to this: upon many hours of reflection and even just sitting here now, I would say that the thing I appreciate the most, especially coming away from Ridley College, is the emphasis that has been placed on critical thinking.

The International Baccalaureate programme is a cornerstone of Ridley's academic culture.

Accounts from alumni and parents emphasize the transformative impact of Ridley's comprehensive adoption of the IB programme, which has become central to the school's academic identity.

A major turning point in Ridley’s recent history was our adoption of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. We began with the Diploma Programme (Grades 11–12) in 2012 and later added the Primary Years Programme (JK–Grade 6) and the Middle Years Programme (Grades 7–10). Transitioning from little IB experience to becoming a world-class IB school has been a transformative accomplishment. Our most recent reaccreditation reaffirmed the quality of our program, which now defines the academic and cultural life of the school.
I was one of those first two cohorts that went through the IB diploma, and for Ridley College to be one of the only schools that do that opens up a lot of opportunities, particularly to national students who wish to go back to Europe or to the US, or go to Asia to study. That was at the time a more progressive move, whereas most of the Canadian schools thought that the Canadian diploma and the US high school diploma would be fine.
The diploma program component of the IB program at Ridley College was something that I appreciated a lot, and still do to this day, because there's a huge emphasis placed on critical thinking. Paired with the resources, the faculty, and the support of the school, there is only that culture of excelling that is fostered within that space. I think the critical thinking skills that are imbued into you during those two years sort of linger into university, and into your future years.

Small classes and committed teachers make personalized education a reality.

Students and parents recount how small class sizes and the dedication of teachers provide personalized support, fostering both academic and personal growth.

Classes are small. Teachers get one-on-one time. The IB program encourages attributes like risk-taking and inquiry. Teachers assess and celebrate those strengths. Ridley embraces well-being and helps kids use their strengths to build on their weaknesses.

Holistic education and traditions create a dynamic learning journey.

Insights from parents and students highlight how the holistic education system at Ridley College, which includes a strong legacy of traditions and an array of co-curricular activities, provides students with a dynamic and comprehensive educational journey.

We really liked the history behind Ridley College and the traditions that had been offered. I think for any person to be part of such a strong legacy is an incredible honour. With the IB Programme, we knew that it would be strong academically. I think what we appreciated most about Ridley College is the holistic education that they offered for our children, mentally, physically, and socially. I think that made such a dynamic impact on us.

Excellence spanning academics, athletics, and arts defines student life.

Observations from parents and students underline Ridley's commitment to excellence across academics, sports, and arts, offering a comprehensive and engaging student life.

Academics are probably the number one draw. But Ridley also offers a wide variety of sports. We’ve got squash courts, swimming pool, ice rink, tennis, rugby, basketball. It’s well-rounded—great academics, sports, music, drama. Teachers and coaches are passionate. What you put in, you get out—if not more.
We have two children at the school. Our oldest just graduated from Grade 6 and was incredibly proud to receive the Mentone Cup. That award represents what it means to be a true Ridley student—academically, athletically, and as a model member of the community. He worked hard for it, and we were proud and excited to see him recognized in that way.
There are three reasons we would recommend Ridley to other families. First is the culture and tradition—the day-to-day care and love from teachers that filters down to the students. Second is the school’s commitment to excellence in both education and sport. And third are the daily opportunities available to students. They are surrounded by like-minded, motivated peers who push each other to be their best, and that’s a true recipe for success.

A range of academic pathways accommodates diverse learning preferences.

Accounts from alumni and current students reveal that the extensive course offerings and multiple academic pathways at Ridley College cater to various learning styles, promoting active and tailored educational experiences.

Something that you don't immediately see at Ridley College is the sheer variety of courses available to students in all academic areas. Whether that be the sciences, the social sciences, or the languages. There's just an array of courses, I would say, particularly in the higher grades, there's a multitude of academic pathways. … It's also the variety of academic pathways available to students that are conducive to students' different learning styles and learning approaches.
I did the full IB Programme at Ridley College, and I have peers who did the hybrid program, or the OSSD program, so that was always available to us as students as well. I think in the end, the variety of classes, paired alongside the option to select which pathway is most conducive to your learning. … In the end, that promotes active learning.
With four children, we needed a school that was co-ed, because we have three boys and a daughter. We wanted a platform that offered a variety for each of our children's needs, and Ridley was such a good fit for that. We liked that it was an IB school. I enjoyed the history and traditional aspects—the chapel on Fridays, the Cadet program. The strong academics were a big draw.
