MESSAGE FROM THE LEADERSHIP

We invited J. Edward Kidd, Headmaster at Ridley College, to share a message.

The overview highlights the vision, values, and guiding principles that shape leadership and the student experience at Ridley College.

Ridley College, J. Edward Kidd, Headmaster

J. Edward Kidd, Headmaster

Welcome to Ridley!

One of the favourite times of my day is the opportunity to walk the halls of Ridley College, drop in on classrooms and watch active learning in action. At Ridley College, you will find that students are engaged in exploring new ideas, debating eternal questions and solving relevant problems. Learning is student-centered and exciting to witness!

In our Lower School, you will discover inquiry-based learning in all classrooms from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Students engage with ‘big ideas’ and pursue essential and enduring questions – ‘what is an economy and how does it impact the human experience?” You’ll see students Skype interviewing an anthropologist from Kansas. You’ll hear the excitement of innovation in the robotics lab.

In our Upper School, you will meet young adults who confidently pursue their passions – academic inquiry, athletic endeavour, or artistic expression. You will see focused and disciplined students leading a Socratic seminar in a literature class, singing a solo in Chapel or persevering through a two-kilometer time trial in our indoor rowing tank.

Cultivating the full potential of each student requires a caring, committed and world-class faculty. The task also requires intimate relationships that are built day by day, year after year. At Ridley, you’ll find a community of adults who are excited to build those relationships. As a boarding school, Ridley provides students with a 24/7 experience that will help them cultivate those lifelong bonds with peers and adults alike – in the classroom, in the House, on the ice or in the theatre.

The reality is that one cannot be certain what children and young adults can do until we challenge them to be their best. At Ridley, students are surrounded by peers who share their sense of purpose, who believe in the value of hard work and who are building the courage to pursue their dreams. Add to this the experience and care of a community of adults who are dedicated to nurturing their potential, and you have the Ridley formula.

I hope that our website offers you a glimpse into the life of our unique community of learners and that you are inspired to look deeper into the Ridley experience. Check out our YouTube channel to get a real glimpse into the Ridley difference. Better yet, I invite you to visit the School to soak in its idyllic setting, to experience classes in action, to meet teachers and Head of Houses' and to talk with students. We warmly welcome you and your family to Ridley.

I look forward to greeting you on campus in the near future.

Come experience the legacy that is a Ridley education.

  • Highlights from the interview

    • Ridley has long demonstrated educational courage—being among the first all-boys schools in Canada to go co-ed in 1973, for example. This pioneering spirit continues to define us, guided now by our mission “to inspire flourishing lives.” This vision draws directly from Dr. J. Miller, our founding headmaster, who emphasized the education of the whole child—body, mind, and spirit. That principle remains central today.

    • The concept of flourishing is deeply embedded in every part of our program. We believe the primary purpose of education is to teach young people how to lead flourishing lives and help others do the same. As a boarding school, and even for our day students who live a boarding-style life, we are uniquely positioned to support balance: the pursuit of academic excellence alongside the pursuit of goodness and well-being. Our academic supports include a full learning center, peer and external tutoring, and evening study hours. At the same time, we emphasize personal development, emotional resilience, meaning, and purpose—skills rooted in the science of positive psychology.

    • We are fully staffed to support student well-being across all levels. We have a Director of Well-Being overseeing health and social-emotional support from JK to Grade 12. Our Schone Health Center includes registered nurses and doctors. We also have a dedicated social-emotional counsellor in the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. These professionals, alongside teachers and tutors, help students build emotional regulation, resilience, and other skills necessary for navigating challenges, from academic pressure to personal struggles.

    • A major turning point in Ridley’s recent history was our adoption of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. We began with the Diploma Programme (Grades 11–12) in 2012 and later added the Primary Years Programme (JK–Grade 6) and the Middle Years Programme (Grades 7–10). Transitioning from little IB experience to becoming a world-class IB school has been a transformative accomplishment. Our most recent reaccreditation reaffirmed the quality of our program, which now defines the academic and cultural life of the school.

    • Another key milestone was the launch of our 2013 strategic plan, which brought clarity to our mission and vision. ‘To inspire flourishing lives to transform our globe’ became our guiding North Star. It galvanized our efforts across academics, co-curriculars, and boarding life. While these ideas have long been part of Ridley’s DNA, this was the first time we articulated them so clearly and acted on them with full institutional alignment. The strategic plan now shapes every aspect of how we live and learn together.

    • In the last seven years, Ridley undertook its largest fundraising initiative to date, raising $51 million through a capital campaign. This campaign supported scholarships and bursaries through our endowment but also led to transformative infrastructure projects. We reimagined the Iggulden Gymnasium into a modern learning commons and converted the former swimming pool space into a creative commons housing ceramics, film, and digital animation studios. Our historic squash courts were transformed into the Manx Music Centre, with music classrooms and a recording studio. We also built the Jack Ault Squash Centre and the Suzanne Court Fitness Facility. These changes have significantly influenced student behaviour and culture—spaces are now active well into the evening, filled with collaboration, creativity, and physical activity.

    • I’ve been in education for nearly 30 years. My journey began in a public high school in the Ottawa area, followed by international teaching experiences in Seoul and Shanghai. My wife, also a teacher, and I spent 14 years overseas, witnessing the growth of international schools and serving in leadership roles. At the Shanghai American School, I was the high school principal overseeing the IB and AP programs. Eventually, we returned to Canada with our three children and joined Ridley College, where I’ve proudly served as the 10th Headmaster now for 13 years.

    • For prospective families, my strongest advice is to visit the campus in person. You learn a great deal by observing how people interact and what the school feels like. Speak with current students and parents, or even recent graduates, to get an authentic view of school life. Finally, ask directly about the school’s mission and vision—what it is, and how it is lived daily. Those three steps will offer invaluable insight into whether a school is the right fit for your child.

    • Our families are incredibly diverse, and they value the full spectrum of the Ridley experience. They are serious about providing their children with an outstanding education, but not exclusively in academics. They recognize the value of learning that happens through sports, arts, clubs, travel, and living in community. They support their children’s independence and understand the importance of allowing space to fail and grow. That alignment with our educational philosophy—of learning through challenges and missteps—is a defining strength of our parent-school partnership.

    • This year, we have 62 nationalities represented at our school, which makes Ridley, as far as nationalities are concerned, truly one of the most diverse schools in the world. We are somewhat unique in that we are a large boarding school—one of Canada’s largest—with 380 students living on campus. They come from all over Canada and all over the world. We have intentionally sought the best and brightest students from a variety of nations, bringing a rich diversity to our campus. Even within our day population, which makes up nearly 50%, we see immense diversity. In the Niagara region, many families have moved from the GTA or other parts of the world and are seeking a world-class education. This brings a wonderful texture to our community.

Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

The school nurtures leadership and personal growth.

Parents and teachers attest to the emphasis on developing leadership skills and personal growth at Ridley College, encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones and assume new roles across various school stages.

We've seen incredible growth. Ridley raises leaders. One teacher noticed my son wasn’t confident in public speaking and entered him into a Toronto competition. He coached him, picked him up, and spent the whole day with him. That same boy ended up being Grade 8 valedictorian. From avoiding speaking to addressing the whole school, it was just beautiful.
Leadership is another area where Ridley has really made an impact. I love seeing our children take on new roles of leadership. They really step outside their comfort zones, and the school encourages them to challenge themselves. It’s incredible to see them become more confident in different aspects of life beyond school. Their maturity levels continue to increase every year, and I love how they interact with people across the globe. They both really enjoy the school.
It’s not just about attending Ridley; it’s about being a part of the school and its day-to-day life. It’s exciting to see the opportunities our children are given to speak, present, and lead. At every stage of their education, these experiences have been invaluable.

The strategic vision centers on flourishing lives with a global impact.

Insights from school administrators reveal that Ridley College's strategic plan, which focuses on inspiring flourishing lives, guides the school’s educational approaches and aligns institutional efforts toward transformative global influence while ensuring innovation and competitive progress.

A key milestone was the launch of our 2013 strategic plan, which brought clarity to our mission and vision.

There is a unique and strong community and family atmosphere.

Observations and accounts from parents and families indicate that Ridley College offers a welcoming and inclusive community environment, fostering connections across diverse student groups and creating a sense of belonging with a family-like feel, where staff show deep investment in student's well-being.

Whether you’re a first-time parent or have several children at the school, you feel welcome and part of one large community. We were a bit intimidated at first, but we absolutely love the school and are grateful for the hard work that goes into it—from the top leadership all the way through. The children are incredibly fortunate for the opportunities Ridley provides.
One thing that really surprised and impressed us was the interaction between the Upper School and the Lower School. The relationships between older and younger students were strong regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. As parents, that gave us a clear sense of something to look forward to—watching our children grow up in this leadership-focused environment.
The administration is phenomenal. They have a head of school, Mr. Kidd, who knows every student’s name and every parent. It feels like a real family atmosphere, and the teachers and administration make it feel that way. They welcome you and are hands-on, always looking for feedback. The support they have given to us as parents and to our daughter has been phenomenal. With the onboarding process, they were willing to have all the discussions before the decision was made, and now, as students, the access to them has been equally strong. We have never felt we were leaving our daughter at an institution. She is well cared for, and her house mom treats every girl in the house as she would her own children. We can text at any time and get information. We also have two other children, and one of them will be applying to Ridley as their first choice. It has been such a good experience that we want our other children to experience it too.

Innovative and holistic education is a historical commitment.

Discussions with the school’s administrators highlight Ridley College's longstanding dedication to pioneering educational practices and holistic student development, demonstrating a consistent forward-thinking approach from its inception to the present.

There's a lot of legacy in Ridley College. So you're coming to an institution that has history, that has stood the test of time, and been able to kind of take different processes and take different kinds of lessons away from what's worked and what hasn't worked. Traditional doesn't necessarily mean old-fashioned. I found Ridley College to be very progressive. What I mean by that is there's always a strategic plan. The strategic plan is always looking at how to improve on the current baseline, and how to beat that status quo, and be the number one independent school in Ontario, and essentially even in Canada.
Ridley has long demonstrated educational courage—being among the first all-boys schools in Canada to go co-ed in 1973, for example. This pioneering spirit continues to define us, guided now by our mission “to inspire flourishing lives.” This vision draws directly from Dr. J. Miller, our founding headmaster, who emphasized the education of the whole child—body, mind, and spirit. That principle remains central today.

The administration is genuinely involved and approachable.

Insights from students and parents highlight the school administration's proactive involvement and accessibility, creating a supportive environment where leaders are both approachable and genuinely invested in the school's community.

Our experience with the teachers and administration has been exceptional. Any time we needed to reach out, we received a response within 20 or 30 minutes. In some cases, we’ve even texted directly with teachers. Whether it’s about grades, late pickups, or scraped knees, the communication has been immediate and positive. Even receiving a quick message from a teacher about a presentation or sporting event has brightened our day.

The school environment promotes character development and maturity.

Feedback from both students and parents suggests Ridley College provides a nurturing environment that supports character development and growth, helping students mature into well-rounded individuals.

I use this analogy: PYP is nurturing, MYP builds independence, Upper School prepares them to fly. My son is a day student but stays until 9 p.m. sometimes. He has a room and a desk—he loves being there. I’d rather have him there, in a learning environment, than somewhere else. Upper School’s strength is the boarding program. They’re exploring how day students can participate more, even virtually. I think that’s an important direction.
We toured five boarding schools, but Ridley was my top choice. When I met the principal and the admissions team, I felt instinctively that this was where my children should spend their teenage years. I always remember the principal saying, 'You leave your boy here, but when you pick him up at the end, he’ll be a young man.' That has proven true. My oldest has grown into a wonderful young man, and my younger son is maturing beautifully. The environment is nurturing, warm, and loving, and I couldn’t be happier with our choice.
Having attended boarding school myself over 30 years ago, I can say that today it is a very different and positive experience. Ridley has provided my boys with character development, maturity, and a well-rounded education. The school has been a wonderful platform, helping them flourish as students and as people. As a parent, I have always felt settled and reassured, and I am grateful for the choice we made.
