At BSS, we do things differently. Our challenging inquiry-based program is based on the latest educational research about how girls learn. Students at BSS learn core academic skills, such as numeracy, literacy, research, critical thinking, communication, global citizenship and digital literacy. They use that foundation as a springboard to generate new, creative ideas. Our unique research-based approach, the Culture of Powerful Learning, both aligns with and enhances the Ontario curriculum. Experiential learning, co-curricular opportunities and academic enrichment nurture students’ intellectual, social, emotional, physical, spiritual and ethical growth. Learning at BSS is inquiry-based because we know that this type of learning sticks. It motivates and inspires our students to go deeper. Students ask probing questions and work collaboratively. Mathematics approach at BSS: Traditional Math
BSS has a Traditional Math approach to Mathematics (as opposed to Discovery Math, Equal Balance approach).

Our Kids definition: Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

Students still learn foundational scientific ideas and content (and build on this knowledge progressively); however, relative to expository science instruction, inquiry-based programs have students spend more time developing and executing their own experiments (empirical and theoretical). Students are frequently challenged to develop critical and scientific-thinking skills by developing their own well-reasoned hypothesis and finding ways to test those hypotheses. Our Kids definition: In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. Learning disabilities

Dyslexia (Language-Based Learning Disability)
This is a learning disability that can limit a child's ability to read and learn. It can have a variety of traits. A few of the main ones are impaired phonological awareness and decoding, problems with orthographic coding, and auditory short-term memory impairment.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
This is a sound differentiation disorder involving problems with reading, comprehension, and language.
Dyscalculia
This is a kind of specific learning disability in math. Kids with this math disorder have problems with calculation. They may also have problems with math-related concepts such as time and money.
Dysgraphia
This is a kind of specific learning disability in writing. It involves problems with handwriting, spelling, and organizing ideas.
Language Processing Disorder
This is characterized by having extreme difficulty understanding what is heard and expressing what one wants to say. These disorders affect the area of the brain that controls language processing.
Nonverbal Learning Disorders (NLD)
These involve difficulties interpreting non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language. They're usually characterized by a significant discrepancy between higher verbal skills and weaker motor, visual-spatial, and social skills.
Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit
A characteristic seen in people with learning disabilities such as Dysgraphia or Non-verbal LD. It can result in missing subtle differences in shapes or printed letters, losing place frequently, struggles with cutting, holding pencil too tightly, or poor eye/hand coordination.
Developmental

Autism
Refers to a range of conditions that involve challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and speech and nonverbal communication. They also involve unique strengths and differences. For instance, there are persons with both low- and high-functioning autism (some claim the latter is identical to Asperger's syndrome).
Asperger's Syndrome
On the autism spectrum, Asperger's is considered quite mild in terms of symptoms. While traits can vary widely, many kids with Asperger's struggle with social skills. They also sometimes fixate on certain subjects and engage in repetitive behaviour.
Down syndrome
his is associated with impairment of cognitive ability and physical growth, and a particular set of facial characteristics.
Intellectual disability
This is a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning (e.g., reasoning, learning, and problem solving). Intellectual disabilities are also known as general learning disabilities (and used to be referred to as a kind of mental retardation).
Williams syndrome
This is a rare genetic disorder present at birth. It is characterized by intellectual disabilities or learning problems, unique facial features, and cardiovascular problems.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. These may include growth deficits, facial anomalies, and damage to the central nervous system, which can lead to cognitive, behavioural, and other problems.
Behavioral and Emotional

Troubled behaviour / troubled teens
roubled teens tend to have problems that are intense, persistent, and can lead to quite unpredictable behaviour. This can lead to behavioural and emotional issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse, criminal behaviour, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
Clinical Depression
This is a mental health disorder also called "major depression." It involves persistent feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms are usually severe enough to cause noticeable problems in relationships with others or in daily activities, such as school, work, or one's social life.
Clinical anxiety
This is a mood disorder involving intense, relentless feelings of distress and fear. They can also have excessive and persistent worry about everyday situations, and repeated episodes of intense anxiety or terror.
Suicidal thoughts
This involves persistent thoughts about ending one's life.
Drug and alcohol abuse
This involves the excessive use of drug and/or alcohol, which interferes with daily functioning.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
This is a disruptive behavioural disorder which normally involves angry outbursts, often directed at people of authority. This behaviour must last continuously for six months or more and significantly interfere with daily functioning.
Physical

Multiple sclerosis
This is a condition of the central nervous system. It affects the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Symptoms can include fatigue, loss of motor control, memory loss, depression, and cognitive difficulties.
Cerebral palsy
his refers to a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. CP is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, balance, and posture.
Muscular dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder which weakens the body's muscles. Causes, symptoms, age of onset, and prognosis vary between individuals.
Spina Bifida
This is a condition present at birth due to the incomplete formation of the spine and spinal cord. It can lead to a number of physical challenges, including paralysis or weakness in the legs, bowel and bladder incontinence, hydrocephalus (too much fluid in the brain), and deformities of the spine.
Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder)
This is a Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Also known as "sensory integration disorder," it affects fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. It may also affect speech.
Blindness
Visual impairment is a decreased ability or inability to see that can't be fixed in usual ways, such as with glasses. Some people are completely blind, while others have what's called "legal blindness."
Deafness
Hearing impairment, also known as "hearing loss," is a partial or total inability to hear. The degree of hearing impairment varies between people. It can range from complete hearing loss (or deafness) to partial hearing loss (meaning the ears can pick up some sounds).
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited genetic condition, which affects the body's respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. It affects young children and adults.

Report Card Policy

While all schools measure individual progress and achievement in students, they have different ways of doing this. For instance, many traditional schools gauge progress through report cards, which give students lettered or numbered grades. Other schools, meanwhile, measure progress in other ways, either in addition to or instead of giving grades. For example, with math, which is probably not her best subject, they work with her to make it one of her best or at least something she likes and can be proud of.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at The Bishop Strachan School. BSS has a strong academic program which prepared me for university and graduate school. Learning in small classes with teachers that paid attention gave me the skills to succeed in more independent learning environments. I also really enjoyed the all girl learning environment. Comparing this with university, I found it was much easier to ask questions and engage in classroom discussion at BSS... which likely made me more confident to do so in a co-ed learning environment later on. Additionally the peers I had while a student at BSS were wonderful. Parents take an active interest in their children's lives and there is a strong parent community. I would recommend BSS to anyone who has daughters for this reason alone.

The academic programming and facilities are excellent. After graduating Bishop Strachan School I felt prepared for studying independently at university, business school and law school. Being put under some pressure in high school to achieve academically, while still living at home with a strong support system, helped me to thrive when I was no longer living at home. If I hadn't been prepared by Bishop Strachan, I do not know if I would have had such a positive experience with my studies after high school. There was a subsection of my class that was competitive however overall the students were quite collegial. I think it was a good balance overall and not a negative. The atmosphere amongst the student body is different amongst different cohorts and I think I had a strong year.

Our daughter has truly enjoyed her time at BSS and we have seen tremendous growth in both her academic and social and emotional skills. BSS has pushed her to step outside of her comfort zone and in turn, gain confidence in herself as a learner and a leader. I think our daughter appreciates her whole school experience. She appreciates the curriculum, co-curriculars, her teachers, and of course, the amazing friendships she has made. Together, all of these things have created an incredibly supportive learning environment that will give her the skills she needs for continued success in her post-secondary education and beyond. I felt I got an exceptional education at BSS. I learned key skills across all disciplines that have helped me significantly in my career as a graduate student as well as as a historian. I was challenged to improve and grow as a student - one memorable example is Ms. Mozarowski challenged me to completely re-write a final English paper on relatively short notice. She knew I could do better. I was definitely not happy about it at the time, as I had a soccer tournament to attend, but in the end, the paper I turned in was significantly better than the old one. This taught me that I should never be afraid to start over if something wasn't working - and that to truly improve my writing, sometimes the best thing to do is scrap everything and begin again, even if you are tight on time. My complaint would be that now there seems to be a shift towards universal design learning - which on paper seems like a wise idea - but in practice, I feel actually does not adequately teach students to manage deadlines, handle competing priorities, or get comfortable with a little bit of anxiety/stress around busy periods. If I had been given an extension on the English paper I described above, I think the result would have been much less rewarding and I wouldn't have learned as valuable a lesson.

It's a well-rounded education with enriching opportunities.

Conversations with the BSS community emphasize the school's commitment to a holistic and well-rounded educational experience, offering diverse academic, artistic, and athletic opportunities that cater to student interests and personal growth.

The biggest thing for me that differentiates BSS is how well-rounded the student body is. There is really no cookie-cutter type of student that is most favoured. We have an incredible athletics program, but we also make a really big deal of the yearly collaborative plays and musicals with UCC. We have week-long exhibitions to showcase the stunning work of our visual art students, and we take our STEM students to Science and Robotics competitions around North America. At BSS, no matter what you’re interested in, there’s always someone who wants to help you foster it. Students really do get a lot of support to thrive in whatever direction you choose.

We specifically chose BSS because they’re very much about the ‘whole girl’. It’s not just academics. BSS is academically rigorous, and I know that my daughter is getting an excellent education, but some schools are just very academic-focused. Some schools might be just sports-focused. BSS is really about putting someone into the world who, when they graduate, has strong values, has strong rules, has a strong sense of community, and who participates in the community.

It’s a wonderful balance between being a big enough school to provide plenty of opportunities and challenges for the girls, while also being small enough to be welcoming and nurturing. One thing I loved about it is that they start the girls in swimming classes in kindergarten, which is different from some of the other girls' schools. It’s challenging and difficult, but it’s amazing that teachers are in the pool once a week, taking these little four- and five-year-olds swimming. It also meant I didn’t have to take them swimming separately, which is a wonderful addition.

Last year, when my eldest daughter was in Grade 5, she made a clay model of the brain. I learned so much about the brain through this process. It was amazing. It took her about three months to put it together and then present it to her peers. That was definitely a highlight. She’s also the lead in a play, which has been great for her confidence. It’s been a tremendous opportunity for her. Every day, they have smaller leadership opportunities, whether organizing a marketplace or helping younger students, like I mentioned earlier.

They have a pretty diverse curriculum… I took Latin, which I don't think a lot of schools in Toronto were offering at that time. I've noticed when applying to BSS for my two daughters that there is a huge range of courses, and it's not just what typical students would be taking.

I'm proud of all of my daughter's achievements at school; I feel that she has become very well-rounded and confident in expressing her voice. She loves creative writing and creative thinking, and they give her time in their daily schedule in the Junior School to really focus on English and writing and to explore ideas. My 6 years at BSS were filled with incredible opportunities both academically and personally. I launched headfirst into playing in the band, a sports team every term, debate club, contest writing, and leadership roles, built lifelong friendships, and developed great skills that have helped me to succeed in academia and beyond. I was lucky enough to be taught by incredible teachers (Mr. Stewart, Ms. Woolley, Mrs. Pfaff, Ms. Fleming, Mr. Moffatt, Ms. Drover, and Ms. Jameson) who were dedicated to their student's successes. The camaraderie of the BSS soccer team is unparalleled - and the sacrifices made by coaches to travel with us to tournaments near and far were incredible. BSS was always a nurturing place for me. From JK to grade 12 I felt supported by my peers and teachers. As someone with an IEP, the school, helped me work through my weaknesses while lifting my strengths. The array of course options allowed me to take creative classes such as visual and media arts and entrepreneurship where I thrived while offering support in the LRC for courses that I found more challenging. Many of the skills that I learned at BSS both inside and outside the classroom have been valuable in my post-grad life. From my media arts class where I learned Photoshop and Illustrator to my role as a Prefect where I learned how to lead others. I am very grateful to have been able to attend BSS

From a personal standpoint, I believe that BSS academics are one of the key factors in my love for the school. In my middle school years, they offered a wide breadth of classes, encouraging exploration and curiosity. As I moved into high school, each year allowed for a few electives, with the number of electives increasing every year. This experience allowed me to not only tailor my classes to what I was interested in but also what would help me in university. Delving deeper, most of my teachers have told more than a few stories of former students coming back or reaching out about BSS topics that were re-discussed in university lectures. Knowing that I am learning content that will be applicable to my university courses is amazing, and it makes me feel so much more prepared and engaged in my classes. Though the homework can sometimes be a heavier load, understanding that everything I complete for my classes is meaningful and necessary makes it easier to complete. Overall, BSS’s rigour, the class styles, and the materials are a huge part of why I love the school and I think are a very competitive factor between BSS and other girls’ schools.

I really like the AP program because it gives students the choice to specialize in something that you are interested in, or are good at. I really like Science, and BSS is so great because it offers all three AP Sciences. I took Physics and Chemistry, and all of that is basically teaching you first-year university knowledge. So as long as you score really high on the exam, or even just take the class and do fairly well with understanding the content, first-year university will be very easy for you, and it will provide you with some credits for graduation.

The campus at BSS has so much to offer. It’s physically a beautiful building. You can see that there’s been renovations done — it’s very progressive, it’s definitely a forward-looking building. The school has embraced STEM, which was also important to us when choosing a school, and the Science Lab was brand new in the Upper School, which was exciting for my daughter.

When I attended BSS, the academic program was robust and diverse, offering a wide range of classes across different disciplines, from English and the Creative Arts to Math and Science. Each department was supported by a strong faculty and a well-structured curriculum, which made me feel confident in the quality of education I was receiving in every class. The school was also diligent in providing students with the necessary resources to succeed in their courses. For instance, students had access to the Adobe Suite in art and design classes and could utilize the school's workout room for gym classes. While some students were competitive about their grades, the overall atmosphere was more collaborative, with students often helping each other rather than competing against one another. The school's emphasis on fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a love of learning equipped me with the tools needed for success in higher education and beyond.

We have been really happy with the teaching quality at BSS. Through the years, our daughter has received tremendous support from her teachers whether it be quick replies to her emails, extra help sessions before or after school, or prompt feedback on assignments and tests. Our daughter has felt really supported throughout her academic journey at BSS and has developed the skills to be proactive in her learning. One of the things we really love is that students participate in parent-teacher conferences - even in the Junior School - and that conferences often start with a question to the student asking them how they think things are going in class. We love that there are really open lines of communication between students, teachers and parents, and we have always found these conversations to be so positive and productive.

BSS offers a rigorous academic program, including AP courses, and we feel confident that our daughter will be very well prepared for both her post-secondary studies and beyond. In addition to traditional course offerings like math, English and the sciences, our daughter has benefited from the wide variety of other courses BSS offers including business courses and arts courses. BSS cultivates a very supportive academic culture, working hard with students to bring out the best in each and every one of them. The teaching was exceptional. Mr. Stewart remains the best teacher I've ever encountered throughout all my levels of education. His passion for Canadian history was electric and he deeply cared for his students. He encouraged us to challenge ourselves, taught multiple interesting courses, and took extra time out of his work to help me write the competitive Begbie Canadian history contest which I won medals of merit for both times I wrote it. Ms. Woolley is an incredible educator, with the ability to inspire her students in world issues and European history. Mr. Moffatt took pity on my inability to understand logarithms or algebra and helped me attempt to wrap my brain around them at an OFSAA swim meet where I was the only swimmer there representing BSS. He was game to sit on the floor of the Etobicoke Olympia pool to help me understand the problems I was struggling with. I always felt I understood math much better when he taught it. Ms. Drover and Ms. Jameson were outstanding gym teachers - incorporating a variety of sports into our classes and helping us to develop a strong sense of fitness goals and a love of exercise. Of course, not all teachers were that good - but on balance, the vast majority were wonderful people who wanted to see their students succeed.

The teachers at BSS demonstrated great enthusiasm for their subjects and showed a deep commitment to their students' success. In courses with more challenging content, teachers would go above and beyond to offer extra help sessions outside of class, whether during lunch or after school. For students who excelled in a subject, teachers would provide more challenging material to further their learning. The teachers at BSS maintained a high level of professionalism while ensuring that students felt comfortable and enjoyed their classes. Ms. Ziniuk, in particular, had a profound impact on my learning experience. Before her class, I disliked math and believed I was terrible at it. However, through her engaging lessons and extra help, I discovered that math could be fun and that I wasn’t as bad at it as I thought.

Throughout my years at BSS, I can confidently say that I have enjoyed my teachers. They have been supportive, accommodating, and keen on making the effort to develop individual relationships with me and my peers. They understand the different learning styles of students and always make an extra effort to stay after school or take time at lunch to provide "office hours" to support their students whenever they need. BSS is widely regarded to have a high level of rigour within its curriculum. That said, my teachers understand how to create balance within and outside the classroom—be it providing "consolidation days" to catch up on work or even throwing in an attendance question at the beginning of class to lighten the mood. They have done a significant job at creating a safe and welcoming space for students while incorporating a healthy amount of rigour that will aid students when they move into their post-secondary plans
