At X School, learners aren’t held back by their grade level, or pushed ahead before they’re ready. They progress at their own pace, with focused academic mornings built around individual ability, goals and growth. From there, learning expands beyond traditional academics through hands-on projects and experiences in entrepreneurship, creativity, leadership, sport, innovation and STEM. Our THRIVE program develops the whole human, building emotional intelligence, self-awareness and confidence alongside academic skills. Independence is intentionally cultivated: learners set goals, follow their interests, solve problems and learn to seek answers before relying on an adult. The result is something families notice quickly—curious, capable, increasingly confident kids who genuinely love learning and want to come to school.
At X School, we have intentionally traded standardization for personalization, and adult-directed learning for greater learner agency. Rather than expecting every learner to complete the same lesson, at the same pace and at the same level, we meet learners where they are and allow them to progress as they’re ready. Guides spend less time delivering traditional whole-class instruction and more time coaching, questioning, supporting and challenging learners. Through goal setting, independent problem-solving, Socratic discussions, collaborative learning and hands-on experiences, learners are expected to actively participate in their own education. This requires more independence from learners—and more flexibility from educators—but the outcome is worth it: young people who know how to think, ask questions, seek solutions and take ownership of their learning.
X School was founded on the belief that the world is changing quickly, and traditional education isn’t keeping pace. Founded by parents seeking something different for their own children, X initially opened as an Acton Academy with a more learner-driven approach to education. As the school grew, so did its vision. We began asking a deeper question: what does science tell us about how the brain develops, how children learn best, and what young people need to thrive? That thinking shaped X School’s neuroscience-informed approach and the development of our Human Adaptive Capacity Framework, along with THRIVE coaching and Signature Experiences. Today, X continues to evolve alongside our understanding of how children learn, while staying focused on preparing young people for the world they’re actually growing into.
X School is a strong fit for curious learners who thrive when they have meaningful ownership over their education. Some arrive because they aren’t being challenged, while others simply learn best when they have the freedom to move at their own pace, explore their interests and take an active role in their learning. Learners don’t need to arrive highly independent; developing independence, resilience and self-awareness is part of the X experience. What matters most is a willingness to participate, ask questions, try hard things and grow. X families tend to value more than academic achievement alone. They want their child to be known as an individual while developing strong academics alongside confidence, adaptability, critical thinking and a genuine love of learning. They value an education designed not only for success in school, but for the world their child will grow into.
X School may not be the right fit for families seeking a highly traditional, teacher-led model where learners follow the same lessons, at the same pace, with success measured primarily through grades and testing. Our approach asks learners to gradually take greater ownership of their learning, make choices, solve problems and become increasingly independent. Families should be comfortable with an education that looks and feels different from a conventional classroom. As a small, highly personalized school, we also recognize the limits of what we can provide. Learners who require significant specialized or one-to-one learning, behavioural or therapeutic support may be better served by a school specifically equipped to provide those resources. Fit matters deeply to us, and our admissions process is designed to ensure X can genuinely serve each learner well.
Families often choose X because they want a strong education without sacrificing the curiosity, freedom and joy that should be part of childhood. Some come to us proactively, looking for an alternative to a traditional school day centred largely around classroom instruction. Others arrive after watching a once-curious child become disengaged or begin saying they don't like school or learning. At X, focused academics are balanced with time to create, move, explore, build, collaborate and pursue meaningful interests. Families value that their child can progress academically at their own pace while also developing independence, confidence and emotional intelligence. For many, X offers something difficult to find elsewhere: a highly personalized education that protects the joy of childhood while preparing learners for the world ahead.
As a relatively young school, X is still building its reputation in Calgary. What we are becoming known for is reimagining what school can look like for today’s children. Families are drawn to an environment where strong academics exist alongside curiosity, confidence and human development, and where children genuinely enjoy coming to school. At the heart of our growing reputation is a simple idea: education should be about not only what learners need to know, but who they are becoming.
One of the most under appreciated aspects of X School is how much space we protect for childhood. Focused academics don’t need to consume the entire school day. Learners have time to move, play, create, spend time outdoors, explore interests and build meaningful relationships. Our mixed-age community adds another layer, giving younger learners older role models while creating natural opportunities for older learners to lead, mentor and contribute. Time in nature, movement and unstructured connection aren’t viewed as time away from learning, but as important parts of a child’s well-being and development. Families may initially come to X for the academics or personalized learning, but often discover that giving children the space to actually be children is just as valuable.
Perhaps the most surprising thing families discover at X is just how much their children love going to school. Parents often expect an alternative approach to make school more engaging, but they’re still surprised when their child is genuinely excited to go each morning, talks enthusiastically about what they’re learning and even asks when they can go back during summer break. At X, we don’t believe learning needs to feel like something children simply have to get through. When curiosity, challenge, relationships, movement, creativity and meaningful choice are part of the experience, school can become a place children genuinely want to be.
One of our newest additions is Signature Experiences, an optional program designed to give learners more opportunities to discover and dive deeply into areas that excite them. Experiences span entrepreneurship, creativity and the arts, sports and leadership, and innovation and STEM, giving learners meaningful exposure to interests that extend beyond traditional academics. For some, it’s an opportunity to discover something entirely new. For others, it’s a chance to take an existing passion further through hands-on, real-world experiences. Signature Experiences reflect a core belief at X: education should create space for learners to discover what they’re interested in, what they’re capable of and where their curiosity might take them.
Over the next five years, we envision X School continuing to grow into a thriving flagship school in Calgary while staying true to the model and community that make X unique. As we grow, our focus will be on deepening the learner experience, expanding opportunities and Signature Experiences, and continuing to refine our neuroscience-informed approach as our understanding of how children learn evolves. Our goal is thoughtful growth, creating a school where more families can access an education that develops strong academics, capable humans and a genuine love of learning.
