The Our Kids review of Académie Marie-Claire

our takeAMC sets its sights very high, and well it should. The academic program is strong, and overtly grounded in an empathetic world view, with an emphasis on providing reasoned leadership. Those three things are perhaps the principal draws for the families that enroll. AMC was founded by Marie-Claire Martin, the child of diplomats, and that international experience has been central to school’s development. After an initial period of growth, the school today hits what many feel is the sweet spot: large enough to be able to offer a full range of extracurriculars, while small enough to maintain a strong sense of place and community. The breadth of the language program, and the provision of an authentically bilingual environment, is also a draw.

Principal's Message

Henry Zephirin, Headmaster

Dear Reader,

Since its inception, Académie Marie-Claire, a private French and English bilingual educational establishment catering to students from 2 years old through primary school, has remained steadfast in promoting the acquisition of knowledge, in promulgating the advancement of education, and in offering the support necessary for students to reach their full potential.

Respect, courtesy and diligence are the cornerstone upon which the philosophy of Académie Marie-Claire is entrenched. It is a philosophy that calls for total commitment and dedication by its staff for one single purpose, and one single purpose alone, offering a warm, supportive, rich and caring environment where self-reliance and habits of lifelong learning are built. The ultimate goal of this philosophy is to foster in students a love for learning, to promote understanding and to serve society

With the knowledge that every child is a precious jewel bringing his/her own glow to this world; a bright star shining on the world; a person with innate intelligence in need of cultivation and nurturing; that an enriched environment fosters greater knowledge; that academic excellence and athletic abilities have their place, expectations and daily life have to be guided by lasting moral conviction.

As such, the Académie is more than a place of academic learning. It is a place where participants learn to collaborate; where life-long skills in human relations are brought to fruition; where respect and collaboration lead to greater understanding and improved performance; where future leaders are molded and carved.

You are invited to visit the Académie and hope to welcome you as part of our extended family in the future.

Henry Zephirin

  • Approach:
    Focus Language-based
    Academic French immersion

  • Pedagogies and subject courses:

  • Mathematics Traditional Math

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

    Early Reading Balanced Literacy

Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
Learn about the different early reading approaches

    • What Académie Marie-Claire says: At Académie Marie-Claire, the reading is viewed as an active process by which students predict, sample, and confirm or correct their hypotheses about the written text. Theories of the psycholinguistic nature of the reading process and reading instruction are used to introduce and improve reading and comprehension.

    • DIBELS Testing: This school does not use DIBELS testing to assess reading progress.

    Social Studies Core Knowledge

Usually focused on teaching history and geography at an early age, the core knowledge approach uses story, drama, reading, and discussion to teach about significant people, places, and events. Breadth of content and knowledge is emphasized. The curriculum is often organized according to the underlying logic of the content: history might be taught sequentially, for example (as students move through the grades).

    Sex and Health Education
Topics covered in sex and health education: This information is not currently available.

What Académie Marie-Claire says: This information is not currently available.

    Mostly value-neutral

By and large, we teach sex education free of any particular moral or ethical standpoint. We try not to impose any particular values or value systems (such as social, political, or ideological values) on our students when teaching sex and related issues.

    Fairly value-based

Sex education is sometimes taught from a particular moral or ethical standpoint. Sometimes particular values or value systems (such as social, political, or ideological values) are invoked when teaching sex and related issues.

This includes a range of positions. A traditional approach might, for example, go as far as emphasizing the nuclear family and complete abstinence from sex before marriage. Alternatively, this approach might simply involve placing less emphasis on sex outside of the context of marriage and more emphasis on abstinence. Or finally, it might just involve focusing less on sex outside of the context of marriage.

This might mean more emphasis is placed on the importance of such things as social equality, diversity, and choice in sex education.

    Preschool/K Curriculum Academic

    • Play-based
    • Montessori
    • Waldorf
    • Reggio Emilia
    • Academic

Academic-based preschools and Kindergartens are the most structured of the different types, and have a strong emphasis on math and reading readiness skills. These programs aim to expose children to what early-elementary school is like. While time is still allotted to free play, much of the day is built around explicit lessons guided by the teacher. Classrooms often resemble play-based ones (with different stations set up around the room), but at an Academic program the teacher leads students through the stations directly, and ties these activities to a whole-class lesson or theme.

If you want to learn more about preschool education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also read our in-depth answers to important preschool questions: What is preschool? What are the main preschool programs? What are the main pros and cons of preschool? What do children learn in preschool? How much does preschool cost?  What makes for a great preschool?

What Académie Marie-Claire says: Preschool and kindergarten at Academie Marie-Claire are an extension of the love, nurturing, warmth and safety found at home. Youngsters are welcomed each day by passionate staff members whose mission it is to brighten each child's mind, heart and spirit. Cognitive, social, and language skills are introduced laying the foundation of skills needed for a fruitful learning experience. Activity centers serve to instill self-confidence, practice decision-making in each center and build self-reliance.

    Curriculum Pace Standard-enriched

    • Standard-enriched
    • Accelerated
    • Student-paced

Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Flexible pacing:

    Flexible pacing style = offered
    Subject-streaming (tracking)
    Multi-age classrooms as standard
    Ability-grouping (in-class) as common
    Frequent use of cyber-learning (at-their-own-pace)
    Regular guided independent study opportunities
    Differentiated assessment

What Académie Marie-Claire says about flexible pacing: This information is not currently available.

    Academic Culture Rigorous

    • Rigorous
    • Supportive

A school with a “rigorous” academic culture places a high value on academic performance, and expects their students to do the same. This does not mean the school is uncaring, unsupportive, or non-responsive -- far from it. A school can have a rigorous academic culture and still provide excellent individual support. It does mean, however, the school places a particular emphasis on performance -- seeking the best students and challenging them to the fullest extent -- relative to a normal baseline. High expectations and standards – and a challenging yet rewarding curriculum – are the common themes here. Keep in mind this classification is more relevant for the older grades: few Kindergarten classrooms, for example, would be called “rigorous”.

What Académie Marie-Claire says: This information is not currently available.

    Developmental Priorities Intellectual, Social

    Primary Developmental Priority: Intellectual
Academically strong, creative, and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions.

    Secondary Developmental Priority: Social
Socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change the world (or their community) for the better.

What Académie Marie-Claire says: This information is not currently available.

    Special Needs Support Limited

Académie Marie-Claire offers limited support for students with learning difficulties or special needs.
