"Duke Academy's English and History teacher, Kylie Cumming, was chosen to participate in a select workshop offered by the international educational and professional development organization, "Facing History and Ourselves." Facing History just launched their first Canadian teaching resource, called "Stolen Lives: The Indigenous Peoples of Canada and the Indian Residential Schools." Kylie attended the exciting launch of the book, and was then introduced to strategies and resources to engage students in learning about this important history. She has an MA in War Studies, and is an expert at teaching difficult subject matter with competency and sensitivity. Kylie's applying her new teaching strategies already: In last term's "World Cultures" class, Kylie's students learned about issues facing ethno-cultural groups within Canada and around the world. In her current Civics and Careers class, Kylie's students are learning about what it means to be good citizens on both local and global levels. At Duke Academy, we prepare our students to be responsible and engaged members of the global community."
