Holy Name of Mary College School (HNMCS) began in 1964 as Holy Name of Mary School, and it has grown and changed in the decades since. For a time, the school was publicly funded, and while it operated continually through the years, it reopened in 2008 with a new name—the current one—and as a fully independent school for girls. Today, as in 1964, Holy Name is supported by the Felician Sisters, as well as by the Basilian Fathers of St. Michael’s College School, who co-founded the independent school. The vision of the school has also remained through the years, though it was rededicated in 2009. Families who turn to HNMCS are looking for strong academics and values, and indeed they find both. Our teachers acknowledge students learn at different times and in different ways therefore they use an interactive teaching strategy to best suit students' learning profiles. Discovery Math turns traditional math on its head: it frequently begins by introducing a novel problem to students, and works its way back to “discovering” a method of solving the problem. The goal is to ground mathematical procedures and algorithms firmly in their applications, and to challenge students to think critically about how they might go about solving the problem right from the beginning. Generally associated with the “Chicago Math” movement and related Everyday Math textbooks (Grades 1 to 6), Discovery math spends less classroom time mastering established algorithms and more time getting students invested in and thinking critically about novel mathematical problems and concepts. Our Grade 1 through 8 Mathematics program is built around the Ontario Curriculum and is delivered with a Singapore Math approach. Singapore math ensures a foundational mastery in underlying mathematical procedures using a three-stage learning process which moves from concrete, to pictorial, and then abstract. The Singapore Math approach ensures social-emotional well being for students as they develop confidence, and comfort with mathematical thinking. Additionally, both our elementary and Grade 9 programs follow the updated curriculum strands with the use of Scratch ™ coding as the mode of instructional delivery for programming. Literary analysis is key to the development of critical thinking. Our teachers choose both classic and contemporary literary texts that resonate with students and promote discussion, critique and debate. Students are encouraged to make connections to themselves, the text, and the world around them as they read and listen to literary text. Students engage in reading comprehension and vocabulary exercises, as well as written response journals, as they build their thinking skills. We have been successful in increasing students’ reading interest through reading clubs which foster offline discussions and help students understand the historical and social context of the text being read. This leads to a deeper understanding and a greater sense of achievement. Emphasis is on the use of the personal growth model which encourages students to draw their own opinions, express their feelings, and use personal experiences and the text to develop their writing skills.

Thinking and inquiry is key to learning in the Social Sciences and Humanities where students develop their own questions, collect and organize data, draw inferences, and engage in problem solving. The Arts curriculum is designed to facilitate an appreciation of art through the study of art history and various artistic techniques and mediums. This involves exposure to art through gallery visits and online and in-person talks from guest artists from the local community and beyond. The Arts curriculum encourages self-expression through the creation of various two and three dimensional art projects using a variety of materials. A major effort is made to integrate the development of digital literacy throughout the curriculum and in everything students do. Digital literacy is understood to be a fundamental skill in the 21st century: it therefore follows, the idea goes, that teachers should find ways to connect every lesson back to technology. Effort is made to ensure the use of technology is meaningful and advances students’ skills beyond what they would otherwise be from using computers outside the classroom.
Our school recognizes the importance of information literacy, media literacy, and information and communication technology literacy as critical 21st century skills. Our approach to physical education emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, as well as safety and injury prevention. We offer a wide variety of competitive and recreational sporting experiences for our students. Gym classes for High School students may include attending a fitness club. Our students are encouraged to find their passion through physical activity and athletic involvement in order to learn the value of hard work, commitment, and discipline and to live a well-balanced life.

Cambridge International Academy keeps the student-to-teacher ratio low so we can focus on the individual needs of the student and support each child on his or her individual path to success. Holy Name of Mary College School welcomes applications from candidates eager to be a part of the school's enriched academic environment. At Holy Name of Mary College School, we offer you the opportunity to develop your academic interests, as well as a wide range of sporting options, visual and performing arts and other clubs and activities to engage in. We offer applicants the chance to demonstrate that they can be successful here. Each application is considered and assessed individually. We look for demonstrated academic achievement and the ability, and desire, to reach your true potential. There are no hidden social criteria; we simply want the best students to apply, regardless of their background. So whoever you are, and wherever you come from, if you have the ability, the enthusiasm and the motivation to study here, then we want to hear from you.
Future students will be required to attend a scheduled interview as well as provide their written responses to two questions. Cambridge International Academy will request a confidential school report from a current homeroom teacher or guidance counselor.
The admissions process to Holy Name of Mary Catholic School is a straightforward once you've decided that this is the school for your daughter:
1. Complete application online: apply.hnmcs.ca
2. Attach a recent student photograph.
3. Scan and upload to the Application portal, copies of the applicant’s Academic Documents (final report cards from the previous two years and the most recent report card for the current year and, if applicable, a current Ontario Student Transcript copy).
4. Complete the Confidential Student Profile and ensure that it is sent directly from the applicant’s current principal, guidance counsellor or teacher to HNMCS ([email protected]).
5. Submit a non-refundable Application Fee of $125. Application fee for international students is $250.
6. Please submit all the above application information by November 30. Applications received after this date will be accepted and reviewed based on available space.
7. Register for the Admissions Test, which will be written in early December. To register for the test, go to: holynameofmarycollegeschool.com/admissions.
8. Once all requirements have been completed, the Office of Admissions will contact the family to schedule a one-on-one meeting with the candidate.
9. Offers of Admission will be sent by email in late February.
While Holy Name of Mary College School is an independent school, the tuition is not intended to exclude students on a financial basis. An income-based bursary programme is available for those in need and we encourage families to seek financial assistance when it is required. Applications for financial assistance must be submitted by November 30.
