Ashbury College is a leading Canadian institution, an independent coeducational school located in the nation’s capital, recognized for preparing students for success in post-secondary education and life. Ashbury serves both day and boarding students, with a strong representation of international students from more than 50 countries.
Situated in Rockcliffe Park, one of Ottawa’s most historic and international neighbourhoods, Ashbury integrates tradition with a strong global outlook. With a balanced approach to education, the school combines academic rigour, co-curricular enrichment, and global engagement.
As an IB World School with a bilingual diploma option, Ashbury offers a globally recognized education that reflects both national values and international standards.
BACKGROUND
Ashbury College was founded in 1891 by George Penrose Woollcombe, an Anglican clergyman and educator who envisioned a school that would combine academic excellence with character formation. Originally an all-boys school in downtown Ottawa, Ashbury relocated to its current Rockcliffe Park campus in 1910 and became coeducational in the late 20th century.
Ashbury’s proximity to Canada’s political and diplomatic institutions has shaped its identity. This longstanding connection to Canada’s international community has helped cultivate a culture that is outward-looking and globally aware, with a student body that reflects a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.
While its traditions remain visible in its architecture and standards, Ashbury has continually adapted to meet the needs of a changing world, investing in innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity without losing sight of its core mission.
SCHOOL CULTURE
The values of integrity, community engagement, and mutual respect are embedded into all parts of school life, from classroom interactions to co-curricular activities. “Rooted in tradition, Ashbury embraces innovation,” says Nicole Hynes, Director of Admissions. “Our state-of-the-art living, learning, and athletic facilities, global programs like Round Square, and commitment to stewardship prepare students to lead with integrity, curiosity, and compassion—locally and globally.”
The school’s strategic pillars—thriving, connecting, and adapting—prioritize balance, wellness, and personal development.
Teachers and staff emphasize preparing students for a changing world, focusing on sustainability and readiness for diverse environments. They promote academic excellence alongside social awareness. While maintaining a highly competitive atmosphere, Ashbury promotes excellence through collaboration, responsibility, and inclusion. Students are encouraged to pursue leadership in various forms and to develop a sense of agency in both their academic and personal growth.
ACADEMICS
Ashbury’s academic program is built on a foundation of intellectual challenge, global fluency, and personalized attention. Students in Grades 4 through 10 follow the Ontario curriculum, enriched through inquiry-based approaches and cross-disciplinary integration. In Grades 11 and 12, students can pursue either the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, with an additional option to earn a Bilingual IB Diploma.
The academic environment balances rigour with responsiveness. Small class sizes enable meaningful interaction between students and faculty, and teachers are encouraged to tailor instruction to diverse learning styles and cultural perspectives. Internationally trained faculty, many of whom contribute to the development of the IB curriculum, deliver a program that balances depth and breadth across the sciences, humanities, and arts. There is a strong emphasis on analytical thinking, effective communication, and ethical reasoning—skills that prepare students for long-term success in university and beyond. “Small class sizes and experienced teachers ensure every student is known, challenged, and supported,” says Bruce Mutch, Executive Director of Enrollment and Advancement. “We foster academic excellence while encouraging students to grow personally, pursue passions, and strive for their best in a nurturing environment.”
Ashbury offers extensive academic support systems, including tutoring, learning strategies workshops, and structured peer mentorship. The goal is to ensure that each student is both challenged and supported, regardless of their academic profile.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Ashbury fosters a rigorous yet student-centred academic culture; the faculty is globally minded and experienced, and dedicated student success and wellness staff provide invaluable support to students throughout their academic journey. This approach begins in our Junior School, which serves Grades 4 to 8, and continues through to the final years of our Senior School.
“We believe that the elementary years are foundational, not just academically, but in shaping character, curiosity, and a love of learning,” says Head of Junior School, Andrew Young. “Central to our program is our motto of Honesty, Courage, and Kindness and through these values, we build strong relationships, where each child is known and encouraged to be their best self. As part of Ashbury’s broader community, Junior School students benefit from exceptional facilities and specialized instruction.”
“At Ashbury, we combine academic excellence with a vibrant, caring community that nurtures each student’s potential,” says Head of Senior School, Brad Moyle. “Our enriched programs foster critical thinking, character development, and global engagement, preparing students for success in university and beyond. Through diverse opportunities in the arts, athletics, and service, students grow into confident, compassionate leaders with a strong sense of purpose.”
Programming is designed to facilitate intellectual curiosity and cross-disciplinary thinking. The school consistently exceeds provincial and global benchmarks in university acceptance rates and academic achievement, with students gaining admission to top institutions in Canada and around the world.
Ashbury supports both traditional and inquiry-based learning models, placing a strong emphasis on ethical reasoning, global citizenship, and independent thought.
STUDENT SUCCESS AND WELLNESS
Student well-being is integrated into all aspects of school life. The advisory structure, house system, and guidance support ensure that students are known individually and receive personal attention as they navigate academic and personal challenges.
“Our students are supported by a caring and knowledgeable team of professionals who offer a tiered system of student support that not only contributes to student success but also a deep sense of belonging at Ashbury,” says Anjelien Slater, Director of Student Success and Wellness.
The school takes a proactive approach to student wellness, offering counselling, peer support, and programming focused on mental health, stress management, and emotional resilience. These efforts create an environment where students can thrive academically and personally, without being overwhelmed by pressure.
ON THE BOARDING PROGRAM
Boarding is a central part of Ashbury’s identity, with over 100 students living on campus in modern, well-equipped residences. Boarders come from over 30 countries, adding meaningful cultural diversity to the school community.
Boarding life includes a structured daily routine, supervised study periods, weekend activities, and full integration with the day student population. Staff living on-site provide academic and personal support, contributing to a stable, familial atmosphere.
Facilities include private or semi-private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, communal lounges, kitchens, and fitness areas. The boarding program is designed to provide a balance of independence and oversight while supporting students in their transition to post-secondary and international living.
CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMMING
Ashbury’s co-curricular offerings are extensive and treated as an essential component of a student’s overall education. Students participate in a wide range of activities, including athletics, visual and performing arts, debate, robotics, Model UN, and community service.
Athletics are well-developed, with competitive teams in basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, rugby, skiing, rowing, and more. Coaches create an enjoyable learning experience while teaching the importance of striving for excellence. All teams exist in an environment that accentuates fair play, teamwork, diligence, and leadership. The athletics program also provides interscholastic opportunities. A team of personal trainers and athletic therapists also supports the program.
Clubs, leadership councils, and creative initiatives are all student-driven, promoting a sense of ownership and engagement among students. “Whether on stage, on the field, or in service, students explore interests and build lasting connections,” says Nicole Hynes. Our co-curricular programs reflect the spirit of creativity, activity, and service—fostering a strong sense of belonging and purpose.”
GLOBAL LEARNING
“Our international student body, including diplomatic and boarding students from over 50 countries, and our commitment to pluralism create a vibrant, inclusive community,” says Bruce Mutch. “Students learn to engage respectfully with diverse perspectives—an essential skill for global citizenship and leadership in today’s interconnected world.”
Ashbury incorporates international perspectives into its curriculum, programming, and student culture, which includes embracing Ottawa's existing cultural diversity. “From IB programs to bilingual certificates, internships, and outdoor education, Ashbury offers enriched learning that extends beyond the classroom,” says Hynes. “Students develop confidence, resilience, and leadership through real-world experiences and meaningful service.”
Language instruction is prioritized from the Junior School onward, with offerings in French and Spanish, and an option to graduate with a bilingual diploma. International trips, exchanges, and service-learning reinforce Ashbury’s global focus.

Ashbury maintains a 100% post-secondary placement rate, with the majority of students receiving offers from their first-choice universities. The school offers comprehensive guidance throughout the high school years, beginning with self-discovery workshops and culminating in targeted support for applications, scholarship preparation, and admissions interviews.

“Located minutes away from downtown Ottawa, our students benefit from access to national museums, galleries, and cultural institutions,” says Hynes. “Our setting offers unparalleled opportunities for experiential learning in a safe, diverse, and dynamic capital city.”
The 13-acre campus features heritage buildings alongside modern, innovative learning spaces, including science labs, libraries, music and art studios, performance theatre, and a recently renovated library and learning commons area, which offers an ideal setting for focused and engaged learning.
Recent campus additions include a Centre for Science & Innovation and LEED-certified residence buildings. Ashbury was the first Canadian school to implement a green roof for teaching purposes, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability. Students enjoy access to the capital region’s resources, universities, museums, and green spaces as part of their extended classroom experience.
